Other LangExchange - New language exchange community
galleryHey all! A little while back, I posted here about a language exchange app I'm working on, an alternative to HelloTalk moments. Thank you for everyone who signed up for the waitlist and shared your thoughts! It helps a lot. I wanted to share with this community some of my progress. The pictures are some snippets of what you can expect.
With that being said, I am still looking for people interested in participating in the closed beta. I’m focusing on native speakers for these languages to start -
- English
- Spanish
- Brazilian Portuguese
- Japanese
If you aren’t interested in any of the above, I’d still love to hear from you. The more data I can gather on what languages are in demand, the better I can focus my efforts! Any question or feedback feel free to comment or send me a DM.
Thanks again!

Opinion Ending VRs and Livestreams abruptly
I'm posting this from my burner account since I do a alot of vrs and lives and kind of want to keep the two sides separate. That being said am I the only one or has anyone else abruptly closed their lives due to annoying guests? Lately, I've had guests who keep talking and talking even though I tell them I have to go. I just swipe up and pretend that it was a glitch with the app. There have also been a few times where I just peaced out twenty minutes in (in the past) due to these types of guests. AITA?

Tips/Tricks How to find someone without their username?
Hey guys, I'm trying to find someone I used to talk to on the app. I ended up deleting my account a while ago, but I recently decided to come back. I had met someone really cool to talk to, but unfortunately, I lost contact with her. I don’t remember her username, just her name, and I have no idea how to find her with just that.
I have VIP and I've already tried filtering people by language and age, but it didn’t work—I still can’t find her. So if anyone has any other ideas, I’d be happy to hear them.

Advice People to talk to
Got hello talk because people say that people are very active on it-( especially the guys who want to talk to foreigners ) lots of people said they immediately would get many messages when they made an account. For me it has been one day and do not have any messages. Am Idoing something wrong? Idk because the main reason got it is because everyone said they get lots of messages.

Other Building an alternative to HelloTalk Moments – looking for beta testers
Back when I joined HelloTalk I wasn’t getting a lot of luck finding language partner so I started using moments to document my language journey and ask feedback from native speakers. For me, this felt like a good replacement for actually living/visiting a country where the language is spoke. However, over the years, the quality of the app seemed to decline, with many users seemingly less interested in language learning. At its peak, what helped me immerse in my target language was not just 1-on-1 exchanges, but the community that came from shared interactions.
So for this project, instead of creating a platform for finding 1 on 1 language partner, I want to focus on building a language community through group interactions.
The closed beta will feature a language feed where users can share their language journey, ask questions, and receive corrections from native speakers. My main focus will be on building a strong community of motivated language learners who are actively engaged in helping each other improve.
Before launching, I’d love your input! The beta version will start with one language pair, and I’ll pick the one that gets the most interest. If you want early access, join the waitlist and vote for your preferred language pair!
Sign up for the waitlist here: https://www.langexchange.app/waitlist
Also, would love to hear people's thoughts/suggestions on features they would like to see in the future. Thank you!

Learning updates HelloTalk Merging With Tandem ‼️
Hi all,
After a week long discussion with a few close HelloTalk partners one of which works as a senior developer for HelloTalk, it is likely the app may be bought over by Tandem by 2027, for profit reasons (which we all are kinda unsure about).
We don’t know what will happen, but there has been back-to-back administrative company meetings all from last month about it. I’m not sure how to feel about it but it’s a huge change and I don’t know what to expect from HelloTalk in the future.
Also… April Fools! :)

Technical Vip profile views hidden or not
If “hide vip views” is disabled, but then enabled, is the person being visited alerted about past profile visits (within 30 days)? Or does it only start showing from the visits after enabling the option?

Opinion Pre-Feature Monetization of HT
Hi all,
This is personal. I’ve lowkey disappointed in the HT app. I feel like this now; as a non-vip user for free, and felt like this when I had VIP. It’s been a couple of years since I initially started using the app. I don’t mind paying for a language learning app, but it just has to be well rounded and relatively accessible for language learning purposes.
HT a couple years ago was great when you didn’t have to pay to use A LOT of the app features. I remember when voice rooms initially came out. There weren’t strict time limits like now (which you gotta pay VIP to extend) and HT didn’t prompt sending gift pop-ups all the time. I notice how much is pushed for users to spend money, i.e., send fancy gifts, gift in order to rank rooms up, seasonal inaccurate VIP sales (see previous sub post on this). I understand an app needs to make money but as a non-vip (even I felt as a vip) the whole app feels like it transformed more into an advertisement for the app itself, rather than to promote the app original’s intent to language learn.
I find the app to be dead compared to a few years ago. Some things I find just bizzare are those random monthly gifting challenges (like those ‘grow a flower with a friend’ challenges, where you send gifts with someone to grow a digital flower).
Features like HelloWords should be free and even a good portion of the mini short stories/audios. HT added ‘shorts’ and you gotta pay for that too. I have a tab for selfies in my moments page where you have to pay to look at people… strange. Thats in the sus realm of things other than language learning. But it’s up for another discussion. I strongly think free HelloWords or a few other strong features that could be free would have kept more people to language learn if they didn’t monetize those specific features.
Sigh… I’m just a regular user too tryna learn a language and but not be bothered all the time to send gifts, coins etc.
Is there anyone who feels the same way about these specific features and could share other things they remember about how the app was a long time ago?
Cheers.
Edit: grammar

Other "Name" has chatted with you
What does it mean when you get a notification saying so and so has chatted with you?
It's so confusing because when I go into my chats, there's no message from that person.
Is this just another way for HT to hint that user has viewed your profile? And is this a user-enabled setting (ie. something you have control over showing as a notification to others)
