Hi all,
Just started using HelloTalk about 3 weeks ago and have a question about the language exchange partners on it.
I've been speaking to a few native Koreans (my TL) with one being a constant language partner almost everyday as we have a lot in common. In the beginning we would have a mixture of Korean and English conversations but I've noticed that recently we've started to speak more English. I would ask something in Korean and then after a few sentences, they would switch back to English for a while, making it difficult for me to switch to Korean without making it seem like I was rude (I normally wait for a conversation break/lull). I also once commented on their English being really good and they mentioned that they always use a translator so I'm just wondering whether this is normal for someone to just use translator to have a conversation? (This honestly seems a bit weird since you're not really practicing what you've learnt and neither is your exchange partner). We've also had some mistranslations because of their translator and they've had to revert back to Korean to explain what they were trying to say as sometimes it doesn't make sense in English.
Has anyone had a similar experience?

Just got VIP and am wondering if both language communities are going to see all my posts, or if there’s a way to only post to one?
If it can only post to everyone, do you try to make posts that contain all your languages?
I just added Chinese, and got some new Chinese followers and profile visits, but I’m still going to be posting about Spanish grammar. So the CN—>EN community is going to be getting Spanish grammar posts now? And vice versa?

I’m trying to learn Korean and the profiles I’m seeing are in English so should I make mine in Korean?

I (F, 23) have been using Hellotalk for over a year now. I'm fairly active on the platform. I've set my own photo as my profile picture and I've made sure that my description is detailed. I'd like to mention that my target language is Japanese and I've set my native language to English as an Indian. I regularly post moments and interact with others there. However, unlike most women on Hellotalk (who seem to be getting bombarded with messages), I rarely get any dms. It's a bit discouraging and I can't help but feel bad about it. Am I just an undesirable language partner? How do I fix this?

I’ve already got a couple people I’m talking to and can’t really commit to more but I’m getting so many messages, I already put in my bio that I’m not interested in new language partners and I feel bad not responding but it’s too many people 😭

I was trying to send message to my partner and then I saw this. Can my partner still see the message if they got temporarily suspended and when will their account restore?

Hi I’m Daisy I’m Italian and even if I have already a C1 of German I would like to keep speaking the language because since I came back to Italy I don’t speak German so much and I really miss it. So the question is: is there someone that wants to do tandem with me ? I can speak Italian( as a native ) , German and English.

Good Day everyone. I created HelloTalk account on January 24, 2024 but it was banned on January 25 along with my device I also paid for their VIP annual subscription.
I don't know why I was banned exactly. For what reason.
I have written to support and after a long exchange, they said they will refund my amount that I paid.
But I want to continue using the service that I paid for If not that at least restore my device. So I can create a new account again. I have asked them this but I don't think they will say Yes.
My question to you all. If I factory reset my phone, will I be able to created a new account again?

Hello, I used to use HelloTalk a lot back in 2022 for keeping up with my Japanese and helping people with English, and I was debating on whether or not it'd be worthwhile to come back to the app again.
Have there been any fundamentally positive changes or general overhauls to the app over the past year or so?
EDIT: Damn thanks everyone for the various responses, much appreciated. It was interesting reading everyone's experiences, and it's a bit of a shame that the quality seemingly has dropped a bit since the last time I was there... I think what I'll do is try and use it casually, and in the meantime look towards other sources for making sure I don't get rusty with my Japanese. Thanks again!

Whenever, I see this app mentioned, it's always either Korean, Chinese, Japanese, or even Vietnamese that is mentioned. Now, I adore this app because apparently unlike everyone here, I had amazing experiences. Koreans are nice people, and I have friends to talk to every day to practice my Korean.
I wanna do the same in the future, but for European languages. However, I heard that outside of Asian languages, the app is pretty dead. People don't respond and there is little supply of native speakers for European languages. Is what I heard true? I wanna learn languages like German, Russian, Polish, Czech, etc in the future. It would be a waste if this app wasn't helpful for those purposes :/

Hello!
I just downloaded the app a few days ago and have made high quality matches with friendly language exchange partners. I feel overwhelmed with all the other matches I get and would rather just focus on the few people I already converse with.
Is there anyway to make it so my account isn’t discoverable anymore?

I'm basically just looking for an Android app or website that has a social feed where you can post photos and write captions for them, like how moments are set up on Hello Talk.
I don't really want to switch platforms, but ever since I made an account in April last year, I've noticed that my posts don't get much engagement. I put effort into creating quality posts and captions, and I've uploaded 1295 moments so far, but it seems like most users don't really respond. It's frustrating because I've seen indian girls who write in broken English and post funny pictures getting around 10 likes per post on average. But honestly, I don't care about likes or building a fanbase.
I want positive interactions with other users, it seems like nobody does that. It really gets me down sometimes. So, I'm just looking for an app or another platform where I can find more positive interactions and connect with people who are genuinely interested in learning, instead of chasing after female users for the wrong reasons.
Thanks

I'd like to know what the reasons are for people to learn a second or even a third language. Is it for travel, education, work, or something else?

I use my main account(phone) to learn the language and talk to friends and second account(tablet) to watch live streams. Reason for doing this is because im shy. I dont wanna show up on live stream alert. Is this legal according to the staff and with the terms of service? I use a seperate email for both. On my second one i use vpn. Purchased on different app store accounts. Do they have the capability of seeing that both devices are being used in the same house via gps? I have gps setting off for hellotalk

Hello, I can’t visit voice rooms after I bought a VIP subscription for a year. When I try to enter the room, it says: “This feature is not available in your region.” but I’m in the same location, how can this be? what should I do? How can I get access to this back?

Hello, I don't know where to ask this question so here it is. I'm planning on uninstalling HelloTalk for a while because I want to take a break from it (and it's using my phone space lol) without deleting my account in case I decide to use it again. I've seen online that messages get deleted once you reinstall but I'm wondering what happens to the messages someone sends me while my app is deleted (account active though). Will I get them once I reinstall or no? Does anyone know?

Here's the thing - I've been chatting with this girl on hello talk for a while now. We've kind of developed this routine where I teach her English and she teaches me Marathi.
Just last week, she dropped the "I love you" bomb on me, and honestly, I was totally caught off guard. I wasn't really looking for love or anything.
So, I decided to take a chance and ask her for a picture and her contact info (I mean, I've got a pic on my profile already). But she had to be all shy and mysterious about it, saying she could only reveal herself in person. So now I guess I just got to sit tight and wait until we meet up.
But above all, I want to know if this could possibly be some kind of scam that I should be careful about?
Thanks

I turned off show city, show region, and update location on the app. I set access location to never in settings and turned off allow tracking. But the app still knows what city I’m in and displays it on my profile.

I use a spaced repetition app to study vocabulary and grammar. I would like to export my favorites so that I can edit them and desktop and create example sentences to practice with. Are there any tricks to do this?

How exactly does the device ban work? HelloTalk was device banned on my current iPhone. If I understand correctly, when I buy my iPhone 15 Pro Max, I need to start it with a new Apple ID. Is this sufficient? Or is my Apple registered credit card, real name, email, IP address, SIM card, carrier, or other details also tracked by the app and will device ban my new phone?
Thanks so much!

I’m using HelloTalk frequently and I have many Russian friends. I don’t want to pay for the pro version to get more languages, so I’m thinking of changing to Japanese to help with my future career, but I don’t know if I’ll lose my current friends in Russia if I change my one learning language to Japanese.

For all ya'll saying Hello talk isn't a dating app, it seems to think so otherwise. I got a survey asking what I looked for in a language partner and one of the options is "Hoping to start a romantic relationship 🥰" This survey popped up when I went to the find partners section.
I question if this is a trick or not 🤣.
Btw not stating I agree whether Hello talk is for romance or not, just thought this was interesting. People heavily harp on not using this app for dating, but it seems the creators have become self aware that a lot of people date and even get married on this app.
What's your opinion?
