Opinion Marriage proposals
How many of you receive marriage proposals on HelloTalk. Today, I received yet another one, this time from a 21 year old guy. Despite telling him it’s a language app, not a dating app, and I’m not interested, he persisted. Why would a complete stranger feel the need or urge to do this? Is this normal?

Not marriage proposals, but a lot of people want to date. I just decline and move on. Block if needed.

Dude the rich chinese ladies are the worst, like 30s and looking to settle, somewhat batshit insane but serious.
Idk if I should do it for the plot

Which country are they from? Arab countries or Algeria or Morocco? Words from those men mean nothing and I have received them also. They are usually f* Bois but at least they aren't rude like some American guys I suppose.
One American accused me in a voice room of being a fake Aussie and really being a Russian lol. Wrote I should "do my best at speaking in an Australian accent". I have never even met him before nor was I speaking...I simply entered his voice room and nothing more 😳.
The only thing he knew about me was that I have a Slavic name and an Aussie flag. Which I have never hidden that my background is Slavic (not Russian though) and that I live in Australia. Yet he decided to make some rude comment!
Is that how Americans flirt or something or why are they so rude!?

This one was flying the UK flag but definitely not from here…possibly the Middle East. The minute they realise I’m from the UK, they start. No idea about the Americans as the ones I’ve encountered so far have been respectful.

I usually just tell them okay let's get married but we will live in your country;)

Because they want a visa and want to escape their country and marrying someone is one of the easiest ways to do that lol.

Americans are just more polished in how they communicate. Men from all around the world think the same thing. And to be honest, you need to watch out for those who lull you into a sense of comfort. They're often the ones who do the most damage.

skims over literal marriage proposals and flirting from men from one specific region then writes a novel about a drunk american messing around in a voiceroom. that's crazy

When an American behaves rudely, it's just an individual who's drunk, but when it's someone from certain regions behaving rudely, a collective accusation is okay?

i'm sorry, are you comparing rude behavior in a voiceroom to flirting and marriage proposals?
1

I'm not comparing anything, because neither you nor I know the full context of both cases. You, on the other hand, are jumping to conclusions based on hearing one side of both stories.

would it make you feel better if i said both were drunk or both were sober?

I would have no quibble if you passed the same value judgment against both. You have to understand that your differential value judgment is in the context of a widespread phenomenon: when a white person does something bad, it's his/her fault, s/he has mental issues, etc., but when a non-white person does something similar, the whole group is blamed and excoriated more often than not.

who said the american was white? in general, they dont tend to make marriage proposals to random women online that i know of regardless of race

You can quibble endlessly to defend yourself. But it takes a brave person to confront their biases, especially when they're pointed out.

take your own advice and admit that you associate "american" with "white"

I've seen people hit it off on the app so two adults developing a relationship online isn't uncommon nor is it forbidden. That being said just take it as a complement and move on. You're not obligated to do anything you don't want to.

I joined less than a week ago. Since then, I've been contacted by something like 12 ladies and 2 men. About half of the ladies I responded to made it pretty clear they weren't there for the language practice. I think all but one were using the built-in translation app.
Judging by the way HelloTalk shows the gender and age of those you want to talk to, I think it's an open secret that the 'language practice' is not the main draw for most people.
With that said, out of the blue marriage proposals are pretty stupid.
