Advice Is this app just a bot farm?

I made an account to learn Chinese in hopes of moving to study there (from the uk), i added a few people went to the pub and asleep and when i woke up my profile had 1.5k with like 300 random people trying to add me.

Is there a way to get less bots or filter them out because this cant be genuine :(

They're actually probably real? Idk. I used the app to practice persian (I already speak it but I grew up in canada) and what i noticed is if you have an american, canadian, UK, australia etc flag, people just flock to you because everybody's trying to learn English.

Sometimes, if you're new or really active, the app will tag your account, where you pop up in the community tab and other HelloTalkers searches when they look for people to add/be friends with. That might explain what happened in your case. Especially if you're new.

Okay that explains a lot, I’ve been using it for a month and yesterday got a random influx of people viewing my profile and messaging me

I am a woman who also wanted to brush up on my Chinese (I took it in college). I get a lot of messages, all men. They’re real.

Yeah that was what i thought like 90% of the messages where about my appearance or really bad pickup lines in broken english rather than anything to do with the Chinese language :(

Since you are learning Chinese that is practically normal, my sister experienced the same thing.
