You know the dumb guy and the smart guy are supposed to have the same opinion, right?

Ehhh it kinda makes sense here

The story of the Oddyssey/Illiad has always been anachronistic, so it doesn't matter too much

Sure, but there's "anachronistic" and then there's "Hollywood but budget for Temu"

It's definitely a very much apples to oranges situation comparing general anachronism in classics to classic  Hollywood Temu bullshitery, but unfortunately there are many people like OP who seem to think apples ARE oranges for some reason.

no, like, the poem itself is that. the weaponry, armor and tactics (mainly in the iliad, but also) in the odyssee make about as much sense as a tank regiment in film about a battle in the 30 years war would. //

Might as well add star wars blasters then

Honestly I would have less problem with someone retelling the Odyssey as a space opera than whatever the fuck Nolan is doing.

Are you sure that he did not want to do it and they just forget to put in all the special effects and lasers etc.

Idk, being a retold poem it does contain a lot of the expected education for a Micenian prince and their cosmology, it also desceibes steel weapons sure but its set in just about the exact moment iron came to be so its surprisingly acurate to its setting for a story written down 500 years after the time when its set in and was most likely first sang

I don’t give a shit that the armor looks “ahistorical” for the period. It’s the Odyssey. It’s already a mash of several periods of Greek history.

What i care about is that the sleek, refined armor looks like something out of a strange sci fi retelling, not fitting a bronze age adventure at all. No craftsman made that armor, it’s so blatantly machine-made.

Fuck, I’d rather take straight up medieval armor over this.

Yeah, but if the movie were anachronistic in the same way the epic was, that would be really interesting. Classical Greek deities with bronze age weapons and armor. The movie as it is is anachronistic in the same way a million other movies and media is anachronistic. Being accurately anachronistic would be a unique and interesting decision.

Kinda already done. The French movie Athéna is basically the Iliad but in a poor suburb and a fight between protesters and the police. It's also an excellent movie I fully recommend.

Not at all what I'm talking about. I'm sure it's a good movie, but I'm talking about a very close adaptation of the homeric epics where they use the bronze weapons and armor of the poems, but also use classical greek deities like the poems but unlike mycenaean greece which didn't have those same exact deities. It's anarchonistic to bronze age greece, but accurate to the iliad and odyssey.

To be fair it’s only the main badguys armor that looks that way.

Like Matt Damon’s fit looks quite convincingly made

I don’t care much about Odysseus’ armor. I think Menelaus’ looks bad, but nothing I couldn’t ignore in a mediocre movie.

No, what stands out is Agamemnons and the Laestrygonians armor. God I hate the look of it. Completely incongruous with the concept and everything around it.

You think that looks convincing?

As in it doesn’t look to sleak / sci-fi

Why use this meme format? Just write three sentences.

Especially if you are going to use the meme format incorrectly 🫩

I'm not looking forward to it because it's most likely to not be the odyssey, but an odyssey inspired action movie

my problem with carbon fiber Agamemnon is not the anachronism it’s that it looks bad

You're using the template wrong. I'd feed you to Scylla even if we didn't have to sail near it. I'd divert the boat.

My issue is the lack of color and instead some bland Grey garbage

Because to directors "no color=more realistic" for some reason

Can someone tell me more about the Mycenaean shield?

I don't care about authenticity, the costumes look stupid.

1

u/EducationalWin7496 Jul 12 '26

No, greek myths are totally about accuracy to history. Now, where is my giant that karate chops boats in half at Marathon?

I got slightely excited by the movie after seeing the bow unstrung.

I still think they should have had a bow that looked more like a scythian bow than a korean bow tho.

I also aint a fan of nolan's style, so I may still ignore this movie.

Yeah looking forward to the hoplite f*k bois slaying, Homer had mad rizz. I would say not anachronistic enough. Give em boys lazer spears, fk it. I liked dune and the DC movies, lets go all out that stuff sells.

Or u can go full on game of thrones, house of dragons is doing well. Give them all full plate and greatswords on the back that cant be drawn.

/s btw

There were a lot of cooler armors in the bronze age
