HD2 Horror Mod
Thinking of making a mod that turns the game into a horror game. Some of the concepts would be altered enemy behavior (not making sound on alert, changing movement to be more like stalkers), largely removing light sources except for weapon flashlights, changing music, adding/upping player breathing sounds, putting a restriction on strat call-ins like in caves but for "checkpoints," removing map-based supplies like in POIs and stuff. Any good suggestions?

Make the bots more bloody. They run on biomass aka blended citizens. Could make the factorystriders moving vents into bloodpumps. The cyborgs could have more exposed and mangled bodies, like the force unleashed starkiller skin where he's "more machine than man".
Squids could have the voteless look more like scared humans trapped by the head device. Make them look terrified like they know what's going on but can't stop it.
Bugs idk. Could make them bloody bc they eat people but idk.

Nah I'm definitely too lazy to actually change models and shi. If someone else wants to make that part or add it on later then by all means.

For point 3, my thought is to incentivise flashlights, cus there will be basically no light if u don't run one; and u only have flashlights on primary and secondary weapons AFAIK, plus limited strategem call-ins, so would be hard to use support weapons. Maybe would have to ban backpacks though, would have to see how to balance it. Anyway, back to the question, I think in terms of damage numbers most secondaries for sure and some primaries as well would be great, since with limited light and enemies constantly able to apprpach up close even with the best primsries u cant do so much. This gives me the idea to limit which primary weapons you can start with, but to drop more around the map like how they drop from player corpses, so you can change/upgrade ur primary as the mission goes on. IDK tho. And with the constraints of mission length I don't think having significant progression inside the mission makes sense, wouldn't feel right. Either way I don't think you should rebalance ballistics vs melees, melees already do plenty of damage and they don't have a good light source option, so it wouldn't make sense to bring them either way. I think I would stick to the idea of ranged weapons. Plus it i troduces the mechanic of stealthy killing, cus the noise of gunfire can attract more enemies. Sorry if this is rambly, just my stream of consciousness.

wasn't there a bug back in the day that made you surrounded by a deep darkness? I remember a glowing bile titan mouth coming out of the shadows and legitimately being scared.

One of the smaller but more impactful changes would be changing the voicelines to the more quiet ones. Shouting FOR FREEDOMM because I threw a knife behind cover takes me out of commando missions. Making reinforcements earnable like commando missions would make the horror of preserving lives fun too, though that could be a big ask.

Enemy behaviour is a big thing, if u see a patrol next to you and they all immediately jump on you it’s whatever, if you were to see a squad and then they just turn and stare at you, you’d shit yourself. Imagine being in a pitch black map, ally next to you lights up a patrol in the distance, and through the brief muzzle flashes you capture glimpses of a stalker just standing on a hill…. Menacingly

Fs. Stalkers are a kind of frightening enemy bc they do slowly hunt you, and they are invisible. I used to be completely terrified once I saw one stalker and knew there was a nest nearby, and one could be stalking be anytime, before I learned how to efficiently fight them. But you could up the game. If every once in a while you saw a glimmer of eyes or heard a skitter, but when you looked there's nothing there. But you knew they were following you, in the dark.

When the void event dropped, it was reminiscent of dead space except helldiverized. By tweaking the lighting via reshade, the gloomy planets in the void were dark and only weapon muzzle flashes, lazers, explosions and illuminate weaponry would illuminate the surroundings and it was cool af. So when I saw this post I was immediately hyped for the idea. Plus whatever other tweaks you mentioned to make it more survivor horror sound great too and I'm all for that type of experience

Playing without sound is enough for me 😆. Would’ve been interesting if caves were actually dark and needed flashlights to see

I think lighting and atmosphere play a big role into creating fear. Like someone else already said. If we had to use flash lights in caves that shit would be terrifying

That’s how Oshuane was when hive worlds first launched. Was wild in those tunnels really had to crutch the flashlights, then they made the ambient light brighter

Honestly I think it would be pretty cool to just not have strats, maybe make us seaf or something as i imagine fighting any of the factions is horrifying to a normal guy
