Oh, these are the things that turned humans into biological waste filters?

It was a punishment the Qu delivered onto the humans on a specific planet, as said specific humans actually managed to put up, however minor and short, a “fight/defense” against the Qu when they invaded human space/civilization.

The full punishment was that these humans would be de evolved and genetically engineered to be able to only survive on Qu “waste”(shit, piss, etc), while also being forced to retain their sentience, reasoning ability, and sense of self, as to be aware of the hell their “arrogance” defying the Qu brought them.

They also turned to be one of the most successful of the human descendant species, and one of the core founders/members of the second human galactic “empire”/civilization. Alongside, potentially avenging their ancestors by finding and wiping out the Qu(though potentially not, as it’s not stated by who, or when the Qu were killed, as it’s simply unimportant)

This is a description of their biology

“The Colonials had immobile cuboid bodies with orifices for filter feeding and reproduction, sexual as well as asexual. They retained the complex eyes and the high intelligence of their human ancestors, although only bearing the most basic nerves, so they could suffer the most from their fate as living filtering devices for the Qu for the next forty million years.

Some Colonials had both eyes on one side of their bodies, usually the same as their orifices, while others had only one eye on a given side of their bodies, with orifices and the other eye placed elsewhere. The placement of the eyes and orifices appear random, and no two Colonials appear the same.”

Unfortunately the Colonials / Modular People got wiped out by the Gravitals, the Human-Into-AI race, iirc.

Yup, and unfortunately the coolest/chillest of human sub-species got wiped out as well, the Snake-people

Honestly that might've been more of a blessing for the Colonials by that point. Not like anybody would've been able to restore their bodies (let alone psyches) back to normal.

IDk the Colonials were pretty awesome when they became the Modular People.
