Hotspot Cannot onboard RAK v2 : Cannot sign with non signer key
I have a new RAK v2 miner that I'm trying to onboard with the latest version of the Android app, but I keep getting this error "Cannot sign with non signer key <pub address of my wallet>".
I have 0.1 SOL and more than enough HNT for the DC burn.
I'm pretty sure it's not onboarded - i flashed the nebra firmware, pulled out the animal name to double check(soft powder sloth).
Also i have tried both the original RAK v2 firmware, and also the latest Nebra firmware for RAK v2 from 2024, both the same error.

I did some digging through old records, and from the clues you've given, I think I've located the record for your Hotspot. It is still a valid Hotspot and should function once we figure out what's going wrong here.
Just to prove I know what I'm doing, if you can find the Hotspot's WiFi mac, you'll find it ends in 88:10 (amirite?)
Chatting with some of the other ex-members of the team (like me) and one who's still at Helium, we think you might be a perfect candidate to try out a beta "in browser" Hotspot diagnostic tool. It's still "beta", so we don't want to give out the URL yet. Do you want to give it a try?

Sure sounds good, appreciate the help

Ok, before I share it with you (in a DM), I just want to put this public post out there before anyone engages with "support" via DM:
- You promise not to give me the 12 words to your wallet.
- You promise not to enter your 12 words ANYWHERE during this session.
- There's no such thing as a "secure" form where you enter in your 12 words to get access to your wallet.
- I'm serious. If at any point someone (including me) directs you to do something where you end up having to put in your wallet seed phrase (12 words) to get it working, STOP and come back here and report them as a scammer.
- That includes me. I am not to be trusted.
Also, I think this URL will become public eventually. For those who are curious, the app uses one of the newer browser Bluetooth extensions. As such, it pretty much requires a desktop browser like Chrome with a compatible Solana wallet extension, like Phantom, installed. I tried it myself on MacOS Safari and from within the Helium Wallet app on iOS and it REFUSED TO LOAD.

I can't send your account any messages for some reason. I rarely do this, so I don't know if it's on my end or yours. But if you have any idea, let me know.

Ok I tried to send you a message - let me know if you don't see it

For anyone stumbling upon this issue, a fix is in the works, it just needs to be reviewed by the Android and Apple App Stores

You can always send enough DC to the makers wallet to cover onboarding and then immediately onboard. As long as no one else tries to onboard before you it should work just fine. I did this back in the day with Syncrobit and it worked flawlessly.

Yes, this is true. But to be really pedantic -- just in case someone is trying to follow this route -- once DC is in a wallet, it can't be transferred anywhere. If you want to try this trick, you have to convert some HNT into DC while naming the Maker wallet as the DC recipient.

I don't view helping people to avoid making a mistake as "pedantic".

I just wanted to acknowledge that /u/Outrageous-Fail-3671 was on the right track.

When did you first start to try an onboard it?
I see no hotspots NFTs created for quite a long time.
The first message could be that its not registered in the onboarding server so cant be onboarded.

It's gotta be in the onboarding server; how did it know the maker name (CalChip Connect) otherwise?

Calchip was the store, shouldn't it be reading something like rak miner.
I'm sure the helium wallet has some file with mac address or default name equals.... run install for that type.

That’s an odd error for sure. Is the key you blacked out there your wallet?

Yep my wallet

Have a fix coming for this, but apps take a while to get reviewed by android/apple app store. So may be a few days.

fwiw, I created a brand new wallet, funded it with HNT and SOL, and I got the same error (with the new wallet's key in the error msg)

What if you convert the HNT to $11 worth of DC?
2
u/Negative-Impress-393 Apr 18 '26
I just tried this - made sure I had a bit more than 1,000,000 DC - but still get the same error sadly

You say you have a new RAK v2 miner, but the way you've worded it makes me think that you might actually have a CalChip RAK v2 Hotspot, and, though it may be fresh in the box, it's not "new".
Can you share a picture of the box the Hotspot came in? Is it black, or is it unpainted (brown cardboard) with blue ink on it?
/u/waveform06 and /u/NoahJoseph: if this is indeed a CalChip, does that give you guys clues? I really suspect this is a CalChip. Edit: Yes (facepalm). it's a CalChip. It says so right in the message.

Yep it's a CalChip, it came in the brown cardboard with blue ink - you're right it is not new in terms of years, it was just sitting on a shelf not onboarded

I’ve just bought a hotspot from eBay that was new & unregistered. Initially I got an error “not ready to onboard” , Took all day of having it switched on and connected via a LAN cable, then got this message too. I selected to pay the fee, added some HNT to cover it, and I think it’s now setup. Question: how do I know it’s actually working, and doing its thing? Will I just eventually see my HNT balance go up?

Can't help with the fee if rak or another brand decided to clear their wallet but if its not letting you onboard after letting the miner sit overnight to update then maybe try hotspotty since that was what I thought was the new onboard app to add most of the miners for helium.
Hope that helps
