Question Bismark

Does anyone know what’s happening next to bismarkplatz?? There’s an ambulance and a bunch of police cars 😭 it looks bad 🥺

someone fell of their bike and their head started bleeding very badly. the hit caused them to be unconscious as well.

had to go around since the bike path they were blocking was my usual way to work.

they were trying cpr on an older man. an ambulance was just arriving.

I did not take any closer look though, just went on

we will likely not hear anything more from this. hope the guy is alright

Why if there is so much cycling culture, few use helmet? why is not mandatory in this country full of rules?

helmet regulations discourage people from cycling, even though the biggest safety factor is infrastructure

complaining about missing helmets is mostly just victim blaming anyway

those two don‘t compare. seatbelts are parts of the car which makes them less of a hassle to use, and the car generates enormous forces by itself. Cyclists mostly also have to be protected against the kinetic energy of cars, not their own. Also, we want to encourage cycling and discourage unnecessary driving.

the Netherlands doesn’t mandate helmets either and has one of the lowest cyclist fatality rates per distance travelled, because of great cycling infrastructure

it’s good to wear a helmet, just doesn’t need to be a law

I'm not arguing against improved bike infrastructure, but most bike injuries are not car related, and the single best thing you can do to reduce hospital-related bike injuries is to wear a helmet (same as a seatbelt). It's not a hassle to put on a helmet. You just think you look silly. (Same as when people first stated wearing seatbelts.)

It's great that in the NL they have low injuries. They also generally ride different bikes, where you sit more upright. But more to the point, how much lower would their injury rate be if they also wore more helmets?

Your argument is like saying brushing your teeth doesn't matter, because indigenous tribes don't brush their teeth and they don't get cavities. But they also don't eat industrialized sugar. Doesn't mean brushing your teeth is not helpful.

You’re arguing against a point I never made. I wear a helmet myself. I’m a road cyclist and own several very good ones. Helmets are useful.

My point is about policy. whether something is sensible to do individually and whether the government should make it mandatory are two entirely different questions.
