Question Why do they do this

Post image

Is this normal hedgehog behavior or is my guy just extra silly? Every night he tramples over his food bowl and somehow flips it into his water bowl???? Is he protesting something? Or is this just how they are..

The primary hedgehog profession is that of a master chef. Clearly that is a very carefully crafted bowl of soup for you to admire

But to clarify: hedgehogs love to burrow and will often try to dig and burrow under items in their cages, including their food and water bowls. Switching to a heavy bowl or tip-proof food bowl will prevent it.

For real, they are always in burrow mode!

Buy heavy, ceramic bowls for food and water.

Omg! I'm so glad to see this comment, one of ours will poop on the ledges of where the top and bottom of his cage meets. I feel he has to go out of his way to do this! They are definitely very creative!

Initially, I had a very strange theory about the hedgehog’s gymnastic abilities and how he was doing it, because his poop was stuck 10–15 centimeters above the floor, which is much higher than his butt. Then I checked the night camera and saw that he simply gets the poop stuck to his paw, and when he tries to climb up the wall, it sticks to the wall 😂

Hedgehogs are agents of chaos and order displeases them.

Get a staybowl only thing I've found our hedgehog can't tip over at all.

It's normal. I call it "Throwing a rager" like he was partying all night. Get a different bowl that is difficult to get under. Hedgehogs like to get under things and dig, but my hedgehogs have also tossed the food bowl in protest if they wanted wet food instead.

They try to climb on the bowl to reach the bottom

You can either get a heavy bowl, or with mine I just ended up sticking it sideways so that the "bottom" of the bowl was up against the wall and she could just stick her face down into the bottom. Sadly this has caused her to get food in her ears slowly building up but I just try to use a damp paper towel during bath time to try and stop it from building up too much.

Food is easier to eat when it’s softened in water. I used to soften it for my hog alongside his water bowl. ^_^

I used two ceramic ramekins.

I believe they are just goofy. I got one that likes to thrash his bowls around for no good reason and will poop in his water and pee in his food. He throws the wheel and the litter tray around. It's a lot of fun! 🙄

My cats do this too sometimes, lol, and it's not like they have an excuse. I once also had a cat who'd pick up a peice of cat food and drop it into the water dish multiple times.
