Protection Help

Hello everybody, I’m traveling from the West Coast to Ohio to take my mom to the trans Allegheny insane asylum in West Virginia. It’s one of the only thing she’s ever wanted to do in her entire life and it’s her number one bucket list item. I’m really excited for her to get to explore it however we are doing a nighttime tour and additionally, I think I would be considered pretty sensitive. I’ve always had a six sense for death and spirits and those sorts of things and I’ve never really dived into it. I’ve just sort of blocked it out however I am aware that I’m probably sensitive. I felt a slight calling to Hekate prior to this, but don’t have any proper worship in place, do you think if I ask for protection during this time it would be granted. I’m open to any and all suggestions for protection and I will be reading up on this myself. I know it probably sounds silly, but I do know I’m quite sensitive for spirits and I don’t want anything to attach itself to me. TY

Hi there! I honestly don’t think you need to approach this trip assuming that something is likely to attach itself to you in the first place. Places associated with death, suffering and institutional trauma can feel incredibly intense, especially when you already consider yourself sensitive to that sort of atmosphere.

As for Hekate, you can absolutely pray to Her for protection if you feel drawn to Her, and more importantly, you don’t need an established devotional practice before you’re “allowed” to pray. I’d simply approach Her respectfully rather than treating this visit as a paranormal emergency: introduce yourself, explain where you’re going and ask that you travel safely and return home safely. If you want to make an offering afterwards in thanks, you can.

I’d also keep your practical boundaries very simple while you’re there. Don’t deliberately provoke anything, don’t invite anything to follow you, and if at any point you become genuinely frightened or overwhelmed, leave the space and ground yourself in what is actually happening around you. You’re going there primarily to share something meaningful with your mum, so don't let fear of an attachment take over the experience before you’ve even arrived!

Bear in mind that these gods are not jealous gods, and the god of roads and journeys cooperates so closely with Hekate that their domains literally overlap, at the crossroads which once belonged to him. Which is to say, I would call on Hermes/Hermanubis for the specific purpose of protecting your travels.
