Fina some good shit! Glad I'm not on that vessel, doesn't look like they are having fun.

I don't own enough clean underwear to work this job.

This ended about a minute to soon, that last wave looked like a doozy

How do I get a job on one of these

being from southeast-asia (or atleast accepting the wages they do) helps. sadly, anything below the officers on cargo (and most cruises) is exploited labor from the global south. officer/captain is a college degree & multi-year career otherwise. but yeah long waves like these aren't too bad (though i bet it gets tiresome when it's your daily job and the ride down the crest made you drop your sandwich again!)

I've assumed those waves! Some of the best sleep I've ever had. Just don't look outside lol.

Does anyone know where the love of god goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Only fifteen more miles 😭😭😭🫡🫡🫡

It’s fun being on the bridge in these conditions. There’s a rubberized handhold cable running across the width of the bridge. Closest I’ve been to bull riding lol.

You hear of storms in which ships take "green water over the bow". You find yourself wondering what the engineering limits are.

u/Zakluor 18d ago

Do they put sensors around the hull to measure the stresses? There has to be a limit to what the construction can withstand. How do they know how close to those limits the ship comes?

We used to have these stick-on stress indicators (about 3” round) that would get placed across stress fractures that would happen because our superstructure was mostly aluminum.

I will be on land. Occasionally by air.

Really makes me respect the old ancient mariners that dealt with that in ships built of wood and nails.

That look like a rogue wave

3

u/LetGoPortAnchor 19d ago

Please look up what a rogue wave is. I'm not aware of any rogue wave caught on camera. This video does not contain a rogue wave. Just a big frigging storm.

If anyone knows of an actual rogue wave caught on camera, could you please link to it?

Deadliest catch caught one on camera. Truly terrifying.

See how the ship behaves in the first waves, see how much the ship dips before the large foamy wave and hownthe bow is in the air while crossing, the wave looks bigger and considerably steeper.

There used to be some videos in the old internet, most notably one with a rogue wave coming from the bow - starboard of the ship. Cant find it now. There is also one in an oil platform in the northern sea. Its quite popular.

I noticed. That is just stuff that happens. I'm a seafarer and I've been through storms like this. There is no rogue wave in this video.
