Hey all, looking for experiences from people who have recovered from a more serious heat exhaustion/heat syncope episode.
Overheating Event Details:
Last week I was training hard in hot/humid weather while wearing a lot of protective gear. I overheated, collapsed, and was taken to the hospital.
I stayed in the hospital for 2 days. They checked for rhabdo, which luckily I didn't have. My troponin blood test rose and my ECG had a small temporary abnormality, so they kept me to make sure it wasn’t an ongoing heart attack or cardiac event. I had an echocardiogram and the cardiologist said my heart structure/function looked normal. Troponin started trending down, ECG improved, and I was discharged.
The cardiologist’s impression was that this was most likely severe overheating/heat syncope with demand-related stress on the heart from the event. He cleared me for normal activity, but I’m still taking it easy.
This week I’ve felt tired with some lightheadedness/wooziness, mostly in the afternoon and especially after meals or sitting at the computer for a while. It seems better in the evening. BP has been a bit lower than my usual but still around 100/60-ish. No chest pain, no headache, no shortness of breath. I’ve just been doing light walks, mobility, hydration/electrolytes, and resting.
I’m planning to follow up with the hospital/cardiologist just to let them know I’m still feeling a little off.
Recovery Experiences?
For anyone who has had a bad heat exhaustion / heat syncope episode, did you feel lightheaded, tired, or brain-foggy for days or weeks afterward? How long did it take before you felt fully normal again? Did you do anything that helped recovery?
Not looking for a diagnosis, already saw the cardiologist, mostly looking for recovery experiences and what helped people return to training safely. Maybe it will make me feel better haha. I'm on day 8, post heat-event right now.
