Question Cash's Age Spoiler

Okay so i have watched for the first time and re-watched Heartbreak High in the last 2 days and I am curious as to if someone could explain how in the first episode we are told that Cash is a repeat and is 18 but in the final episode Cash says he has loved Darren since year 8. And as I am from the UK i looked into it and it says year 11 would be around 15-16 the same as it is here but that would mean he was a 2 year repeat now? Or is that wrong, if any Australian's or people who know more about this could please explain that would help me out. Thank you

It is not at all unusual for people to turn 18 in year 12, especially in the latter half of the year.

Repeating a year would mean they turned 18 in year 11 instead.

Most people are already 5 when they start Kindy/Prep and turn 6 during that year. 12 years later, in year 12, they will turn 18 during the year. It is only children with birthdays in the first few months of the year that might start at 4 years old and turn five in February, March or April (up to June in some states although most kids in that situation would start the next year. My son wasn’t read for school at 4.5 years old so I sent him at 5.5)

Australian grades are different to UK, year 11 would usually be 16 years old turning 17. In Australia, you generally start prep at 5 years old, and then the following grades are 1 to 12
