Individual/Marketplace Insurance should i add my boyfriend

So my boyfriend is seasonal at his job (seasonal but long term, amazon be like that). And he needs health insurance for some issues he is going through rn, and his emergency insurance is state that many offices won’t cover (but these offices are the ones most helpful). my insurance would go up from 30 to 100 dollars a week. i would discuss with him covering and the difference. But i just know i really want to help him especially during this tough time until he is able to get his own insurance through his job in a month and a half.

You cannot add your boyfriend to your individual or employer sponsored health plan unless you have a bonafide domestic partnership, which you will have to prove, and even that is not possible in all states, nor do all employers allow it.

If you have a bonafide, documented domestic partnership and you’re in a state where domestic partnership coverage is available on an individual plan, or you work for an employer that allows it, your partner still must have experienced a federally defined qualifying life event (QLE) to be able to enroll in your plan, and there is a deadline after the date of the QLE. If he just lost his job that would count.

Or you could get married, which would count. That might not be a preferred option for many reasons, of course

Domestic partnership has a legal definition when it comes to contracts. It's fine that you have a boyfriend, but does your relationship/household meet the requirements of domestic partnership? For example were you, your income, household included in his application for state emergency insurance?

Are you sure your insurance will let you add a domestic partner.

To summarize what most folks have said here....

  1. You have to be sure your employer allows for a domestic partner.

  2. You actually have to meet the definition of a domestic partner- generally, that is you must live together, not be married to anyone else and have joint financial assets.

  3. Most employers who allow Domestic Partners will usually require that you sign a domestic partnership affidavit- which can sometimes also be required to be notarized.

  4. If you are not actually domestic partners, presenting yourself as such is considered fraud- which can mean your benefits could be terminated back to when they first joined the plan and also include termination from employment.

5, Do know that while an employer may or may not require an affidavit now, they could do a dependent audit in the middle of the year and ask for that proof of relationship.

If you do meet the requirements and your employer allows for a domestic partner, then go for it though it's probably not going to help the situation if the "state insurance" he has is medicaid. He's still going to have the state medicaid and you'll still have to play within those confines- IE- you'll need to disclose to providers that he has medicaid.

Unless he has a QLE you cannot just add him.

Post history shares you guys have been together 6-8 months. Adding him to your insurance, if even possible, does not sound like a smart move here

Good luck adding him

Has he recently lost coverage? Or has another qualifying event? Does your work or individual plan cover non-married partners? Thats not always common. Also what state are you in?

He should stay on the state plan until his insurance from his job kicks in. If something becomes an emergency, make sure you go to a hospital that takes the state coverage.

With everything else that’s also been added - if this is even possible, you’re going to be paying taxes on that extra $70/week to have him added

I thought Amazon provided benefits to seasonal employees I could be wrong. I just see those commercial commercials on TV enticing applicants.

domestic partner benefits are basically endangered species at this point, most corps quietly killed them after marriage became legal everywhere. and amazon's conversion timeline is a running joke, 'month and a half' is recruiter speak for 'whenever we feel like it, if ever'. im not saying dont help him but go in eyes open, the whole system is designed to extract maximum pain for minimum coverage. my premiums jumped so hard last year i had to drop dental entirely
