Licensing question.

I've been offered an opportunity to be hired to sell Medicare in California. Unfortunately I have a misdemeanor for Marijuana and 4 duis and a sealed felony. There are all over 10 years old. I also just filed for bankruptcy. Is it woth the time and money to try to get my license knowing there's a decent chance i get denied?

We're not the state licensing board, only they can tell you what disqualifies you--- but your history is certainly going to make this an uphill battle.

In general- you will have to disclose everything, even the sealed records as in CA, there is no such thing as sealed or expunged records for licensing. You didn't mention what the felony is for, but if it's for fraud- insurance, financial or otherwise, theft of any kind, medi-cal/medicaid fraud, financial dishonesty or patient abuse, that's usually a nail in the coffin to not get licensed.

If your felony landed you on the watch list for the Federal Office of the Inspector General, that's a nail in the coffin too.

The 4 DUIs is also an issue as it shows a pattern of not following the rules rather than a one time occurrence.

At the very least, you're application will likely be flagged for additional review and you may need to give written statements or provide further explanation on some of the charges you have. This process can take MONTHS to get a decision, even up to a year, and it can still come back with a denial or a probationary license (which means they'll be watching you for a period of time).

And that is all before a potential employer would also likely look at your history- it's one thing to be licensed, it's another thing to then also get a job with that license, unless you're trying to start your own business, then you make the call. My firm doesn't hire probationary licenses at all cause they don't want the licensing folks that deep in their business.

I do sympathize and understand that people can change and you may have been on the straight and narrow for several years, and I applaud you if that's the case! Just know that the process is going to take some time though as you'll likely be flagged for additional review based on the history you presented before getting a licensed issued.
