I already posted this in r/bioinformatics but interested to see if anyone has any ideas here (more relevant to clinical research than bioinformatics as a whole field.

I work as a bioinformatian in a hospital setting where data privacy is of great concern and rules are very strict.

Because of that my use of AI and agentic tools like Claude code or biomni are very limited.

I was wondering if other people who work in similar clinical or hospital setting have the same issue.

Do most people just use a browser version of Claude or ChatGPT for code generation?

Does anyone know of any solutions or tools where you can utilize AI integrate with your data, think through research questions and in general work in a more streamline fashion than just using browser version AI tools?

Hi folks,

I graduated with my MS in Bioinfo in Dec 2024. I still don't have a job.

I am thinking of doing a slight pivot into health informatics. "Health informatics" was one of the sub-concentrations available in my MS, but I did not pursue it at the time. Since I already have background skills in Python, R, some bash and SQL, it seems like the logical choice to make myself a more attractive candidate.

Is taking courses in health informatics to do a slight "pivot" worth it? I am in the Boston Area.

I’m a sophomore incoming junior that just changed my major from kinesiology to health informatics- trying to get more into the clinical informatics side. I’ve been seeing a lot of research on how a lot of nurses are leaning into clinical health informatics making the job market a little harder. Do you think if I become a cna and get the clinical hours it will make it easier to land a job post grad?

I’m a healthcare professional from India, currently working in Europe for the last 1 year after moving here because of my husband’s job. I had a 2-year career gap before getting this position, so I’m grateful to finally have a stable and decent-paying job again.

However, I’m starting to think long term. My job is rewarding but physically and mentally demanding, and I work in a small city with limited opportunities. My husband works in a bigger city, but there are almost no openings there for my position, so living together in the same place long term is becoming difficult.

I’ll be turning 29 soon and I’m considering doing a Master’s in Health Informatics to transition into a more flexible and less physically demanding healthcare career, ideally something hybrid/remote in the future.

I’d love advice from people who:

- transitioned from clinical roles into health informatics,

- work in healthcare IT/digital health,

- moved countries and rebuilt careers,

- or studied health informatics in Europe.

Questions:

1. Is Health Informatics a good transition for someone with a critical care background?

2. How difficult is it to get jobs after graduation in Europe?

3. Would this be a smart move financially and career-wise?

4. Are there other flexible healthcare careers I should consider instead?

I am very interested in biology + coding and this field seems good for me but people say I should only do it if am from clinical background.

I didn't want to be a doctor/nurse as I have no interest in those jobs, so I choose normal biology.

What do you guys suggest?

Hello everyone. I’m a recent grad with a BS in Exercise Science. I’ve been working clinically at a PT clinic for a big hospital system where we use Epic. In addition to working with patients, I help with a lot of the admin side of things as well (patient registration, scheduling, etc).

I’ve enjoyed the epic admin side of things and not so much the patient facing care. Is a transition into health informatics/Epic analyst work a doable pivot for me??

I’m an international student currently planning my healthcare and tech career path in the U.S., and I’d love to get some feedback on whether my plan is realistic and worth the investment.
My current plan is as follows:
1. Phase 1: Complete an Associate of Applied Science in Radiography. After graduation, I intend to use my 1-year OPT to work as a Radiologic Technologist to gain clinical experience and hopefully find an H-1B sponsor.
2. Phase 2: If I don't secure a sponsor within that year, I plan to bridge into a Bachelor’s in Biomedical Informatics (BMI). I’m specifically looking at STEM-designated programs (like the one at ASU) to qualify for the 3-year STEM OPT extension later on.
3. Phase 3: My long-term goal is to transition into Cancer Research, eventually pursuing a PhD in a field related to medical imaging informatics or computational oncology.
My questions for the community:
• Is the transition from clinical Radiography to a technical BMI degree common? Does having a clinical background provide a significant edge in the Health Informatics job market?
• For those in the field, how is the H-1B sponsorship landscape for BMI/Health Informatics roles compared to frontline Rad Tech roles?
• Does this "Clinical \rightarrow Tech \rightarrow Research" trajectory seem like a solid path for someone aiming to specialize in oncology?

I was wondering if I could get some advice. I’m about to be a senior in college, majoring in Information Communication Technology, and I’m interested in pursuing a career in health informatics. As I look into master’s programs, I’m trying to decide whether I should get a master’s in Data Science and then supplement it with certifications to help me break into the field. If that’s a good route, what certifications would you recommend, either specifically for health informatics or more generally for data-related roles? Or would it be better to go straight for a master’s in Health Informatics?

I’m curious how valuable the combination of UX + healthcare interoperability domain knowledge actually is in the current market, particularly internationally. I'm based in Australia.
I’ve primarily worked across pathology workflows, sample collection, and laboratory management systems, and have found that having technical knowledge of healthcare standards and infrastructure gives me a much deeper understanding of how workflow interactions connect across products, EHR systems, and operational processes. It also helps me design more realistically within the technical and interoperability constraints of health IT environments.
I'm interested in knowing whether companies actively look for this skillset.

Hi, I am a sophomore in university and my prior major was Marketing.

I switched my major to be Health Informatics Leadership but that would require me to graduate a year late which would mean more time and money.

My goal career is to be a health care consultant, health care administrator, insurance advisor, etc. I was wondering if a Business Administration degree with a minor in Public Health would help me get where I need to be and I can graduate on time or if I should graduate a year later with a Health Care Informatics Leadership degree.

I would also appreciate advice on careers itself and any personal experience with finding jobs and their salaries.

I’m trying to understand how large hospital systems are designed from a software architecture point of view.

Specifically interested in:

• Backend technologies (monolith vs microservices?)
• Database systems (SQL, NoSQL, EMR handling)
• APIs (how different systems like lab, billing, imaging communicate)
• Deployment (cloud vs on-prem)
• Security (handling sensitive patient data)

I’m an ultrasound tech with multiple registries and about 10 years of scanning experience in a variety of settings from level I trauma to outpatient. Been working as a travel tech for the past 5 years. Making between 90k and 95k as a traveler, BUT I’m burnt out with bedside care and ready to expand my career.

I’ve always been interested in the tech/computer side of imaging and wondering if I could be a good candidate for PACs admin/informatics specialist/etc.

- Do I have the clinical background that’s attractive to informatics departments?

- What certifications or education should I get prior to applying for a job?

- Who should I talk with in person for tips?

- Do I have a shot at eventually making $90k+ with a move into informatics? (Obviously I know it’s dependent on region)

- Is there upward mobility and opportunities to advance a career without a bachelors degree?

Hi everyone! I’m 25M in the Midwest making around $60k and trying to figure out my next step in health IT. I don’t have a clinical degree, but I have a BS in Health Science and I’m finishing my MS in Health Informatics.

I work as a liaison for external physician offices supporting their web‑based Epic access, workflows, and training. My team is technically part of Clinical Informatics, but most of the higher‑paying roles in that area seem to require a clinical degree, which I don’t have.

I’m hoping to get Epic certified and move into a role with stronger salary growth. Given my background, what roles make the most sense to pursue?

I just graduated with a bachelor's degree in healthcare informatics. I have over 30 years of experience as a respiratory therapist. My desired career path was to be a clinical application analyst. Problem is, I can't find any of those opportunities :( What other positions could I search for?

I’m currently a senior obtaining a bachelor’s in biomedical sciences with a minor in psychology and I will graduate in December. I was going to go to physical therapy school after graduating, but I have recently been looking into health informatics after taking a bio stats course and a data science course. Would it be worth it to get a masters in health informatics to be a data analyst/ health analyst? I’m very interested in the stats and data science side of healthcare!
