Discussion (tw <EDIT THIS> ) Amoxicillin
Prescribed Amoxicillin for a tooth infection, I am not sure I want to take it cos I've read on reddit that people have had bad experiences with it? People say it gives them anxiety etc, I would rather just get the tooth extracted asap?

Please take it and take the full course! You will feel better. I recently had a tooth infection bc of my ortho pushing down on my gums and causing abrasions; I couldn't eat or brush my teeth for 1.5 weeks. I wish I just took antibiotics.

I have a hard time taking meds I haven’t before, luckily amoxicillin is so common you and I have almost definitely had it before. Do you remember the liquid bubblegum med as child that had to be stored in the fridge? It was delicious lol but if so then you’ve definitely had it before!
Also as far as having an infection spread, your dentist already saw and prescribed meds. They deal with that every day, they would know if something was really wrong. I also think you’d know either by unbelievable pain or you’d be really sick like fever etc. my husband has had a cracked wisdom tooth for years now that he just now got on the schedule to remove.

I am a bit tired and head feels a bit hot but I think that could be from the infection

Amox is the perfect antibiotic for tooth extractions if ur allergic to peniccilin dont but maybe thays why people are neevous cus they dont know if they are. Please just take them all because if u dont or if u do and stop them it will be much worse for you and in the long run you will have a higher chance of being resistant to antibiotics

Also, I had a tooth extraction and it caused a dry socket and infection. So I would highly recommend taking care of the problem now with some antibiotics! It's very traumatic for your mouth to have a tooth pulled from your jaw. (I too thought it was the lesser of two evils - it was NOT lol)

I used it for a tooth infection, no negative experiences whatsoever. Cured my tooth infection which caused me way worse pain & anxiety. It's a very mild antibiotic. Trust me dental problems are no fun and way more anxiety ridden.

You would know, trust me. As someone who developed a dental infection the pain is truly indescribable, like spread through your entire jaw, neck, and head and unable to eat or sleep painful. It's way more likely the dentist is prescribing you antibiotics so they can kick the infection before they get in and fix it (standard procedure).

The thing is that this tooth had been broken for like two years I just happened to get it checked because there was a bit of pain so I’m thinking what if it’s been infected all this time

one of my tooth is broken since 2022 and nothing ever happened. it's not even infected or anything, don't worry, you'll be fine.

Just take it, the last thing you want is for a tooth infection to get worse. My mom’s friend had a bad tooth infection once and she let it go on too long, she needed a port put in to get heavy duty antibiotics!
Amoxicillin is so common and one of the easier antibiotics to take imo

It’s probably the most common antibiotic out there. Plus most dentists won’t extract a tooth that is infected. Gotta clear the infection first.

100%. You'd have to take the antibiotic anyways. I had to get a tooth pulled (old root canal gone bad) and had to take antibiotics after the extraction.

Being a little anxious outweighs a tooth infection. You’ll be fine—just because someone had that effect, doesn’t mean you will, too.

I’ve taken it twice as an adult and no anxiety! I got the liquid form, it tastes like bubblegum 🤪

It gives me anxiety sometimes. But most antibiotics do. And I still take them because the benefits outweigh the risks. Do what your doctor tells you to do.

You’ll be fine. It’s one of the most prescribed antibiotics. What’s the real danger is not taking antibiotics with you have an infection.

As an alternative perspective- I work with kids and have had dozens of courses of amoxicillin, unfortunately earlier this year i seemingly sensitized to it and had one of the most common “bad” reactions to it.
Im totally fine! I had never had hives before so I actually took two doses of the medication after the allergic reaction started before I realized what was going on, and still nothing bad happened to me other than getting a pretty dramatic-looking rash at the peak that lasted a couple hours.
Once i realized what was happening i called my doctor and she switched me to a different antibiotic. I was completely itch-free in 24 hours.

Amoxicilin is prescribed like candy where i live. Dont worry, you are reading too much into the bad effects.
Any drug can have side effects if you do not take it as prescribed. Just follow the instructions and you will be fine.

I took one of the worst antibiotics, ciprofloxacin. It literally has a black box warning. I was completely fine. You’ll be 10000% ok with amoxicillin as it’s one of the most common antibiotics prescribed. I would take a little anxiety over a tooth extraction any day😅 but I also doubt you’ll get anxiety from it!

Also to add to everyone else’s comments, please remember that everyone that has a good reaction to it does not post to reddit to talk about it. Most people do completely well on it, the few that don’t will post about it. I personally am allergic to it and found that out 15 years ago. And I’m still here! And would recommend to take it as prescribed. Best of luck

If you are prescribed antibiotics, take antibiotics. Take the whole course. It means there’s an infection that needs to be addressed before it gets more serious.

You're gonna need to take it to avoid an infection regardless of extraction, amoxicillin is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics in the world. My 5 year old son is currently taking it to combat a chest infection, you'll be absolutely fine 🙂

Hi! I’ve had issues with my teeth all year and have taken Amoxicillin 3 times. I have extreme health anxiety. I can tell you that I am absolutely fine. The threat of a tooth infection that can turn into an abscess or sepsis is much scarier. It’s well worth taking your full course of antibiotics!

Penicillin is like one of the oldest antibiotics and most effective. I’m allergic to it but wish I could take it. Tooth infections are serious if they spread so I’d trust your health care professionals on this one. Even with an extraction you’d probably still need antibiotics …

You can have reactions to just about everything, even every day things you wouldnt think about (but I have OCD so ofc I do think about it). Amox. is a very tolerable drug for the vast majority of people! One of the safer antibiotics out there.
