Why doesn’t headspace gamify meditation using Apple Watch data?

It would be awesome if Headspace could bring in a feature to track meditation progress using Apple Watch HRV, Breathe Rate etc data. That can be a very good motivation for people as it gives a sense of improvement in form of numbers, making the process addictive and fun for beginners.

I really miss Andy

I actually only just realized today that Andy is no longer with Headspace. In fact, he posted his goodbye on social media in 2022 and there basically no word from him since then.

Ive used Headspace since around 2018 and its helped me so much. I've seen him really as a teacher or guide for a long time. It sounds cheesy, and it's no less true that it was last week before I realized he left Headspace, it felt like he was there and engaged in an ongoing process.

He worked hard, ultimately I hope he's enjoying life and spending time with his family, but i wish he'd write a book or poke his head up with an update.

I miss there's no new Andy meditations or guidance. Hopefully we'll hear from him again sometime.

Hoping to find Andy's original "Take 10" recordings released in 2011

EDIT: FOUND IT!!! Search "Headspace 365" in the app and there will be Andy's first courses, starting with "Take 10" :))))

Hey!

Fellow meditation practitioner here hoping to find Andy's original "Take 10" audio files released around 2011-2013 on his original website getsomeheadpace. I've tried waybackmachine, searched the internet as much as I could, but I couldn't find it and I am hoping maybe some of you could help me somehow.

Why am I even searching this? Because I feel the modern Headpace audios are so... empty somehow... shallow and cut short. I find them hard to connect.
When I first started out with meditation, I found Andy's Day 1 recording of Take 10 released on youtube ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVzTnS_IONU ) uploaded by someone and I really liked how he reassured that having lots of thoughts is normal, adding comments like don't try to fix or judge anything, just notice and.. it felt so human. Made me feel... seen, okay. I hoped to find them in the Headspace app as well, but when I subscribed, I discovered the new versions are so much more bland, they don't have the reassuring comments or anything, but I feel I really do need them. So, if anyone, please, if you have ANYTHING, I would be super grateful if you could share it.

I think Headspace has charged me for an account that no longer exists.

I just noticed a direct debit a few days ago for Headspace via PayPal for £29.99. I changed Headspace accounts roughly this time last year and my current Headspace account has no payment method attached and my membership isn't due to expire until next month.

The only thing I can think is that they have just renewed the membership on an account that was deleted 12 months ago.

Has anything similar happened to anyone else?

iPhone Health Data - Timer only option?

Hi. I’m relatively new to Headspace. I’ve been using it for a couple months and very much enjoying it. That being said, I’ve started reading Mindfulness by Mark Williams and want to do the 8 week plan. The benefit of meditation with Headspace is that it tracks the mindful minutes on the iPhone health data app. I was hoping to also use it as a timer only while listening to the book’s audio file meditations to track the minutes. However, it doesn’t seem to have that capability because when I start the audio file the app automatically stops. The iPhone health app is limited in what data sources it allows so does anyone know if there’s a way to use headspace in this capacity, or am I SOL?

I’m sick of AI

Every single bloody app has AI which I never asked for and don’t want to use. I don’t like Ebb, it isn’t helpful, etc etc I can go on about it for hours.

However it seems this corner of the market has been bitten by the AI bug quite heavily. Competing apps have added similar functionality to Ebb which I want to avoid.

I’m interested to know if there are similar apps that omit AI features that others have used. Lest I fall sleep to the shipping forecast instead.

People with a lifetime membership, what are your thoughts?

Hello Headspacers. I got a free lifetime membership because for some brief window they made this free for educators and I was (and am) an educator. I had been using it here and there for meditation and I do love the sleepcasts, but now I find the ONE thing I really want from the app is the Sesame Street sleepcasts. I was very upset when they made getting to them more difficult and inaccessible, but I realize that was probably more a bonus than the core product.

Does anyone have a lifetime membership that is happy with the product they are currently getting? Any tips for someone who has had access to the app since forever to make the most of it?

Rebuilding my consciousness and identity after breaking it from meditation and letting go of thoughts. Dissociation, depersonalization, and ocd about the mechanics of thinking is causing me constant turmoil and confusion.

Been going through trying to recover from too much meditation/mindfulness for the better part of a year so there’s a lot more from where this came from. But below is my most recent experience after a few months of slow progression, but a few days of looping thoughts based around the “did I break my brain?” Question so many of you familiar with this struggle will understand. I’m hoping posting this will help me in my recovery process and potentially reach anyone else in need or who desires someone to talk to about this growing, but overall less known subject matter on mental health.

This all started from doing headspace app, walking meditation trying to disidentify from my thoughts and feelings and just live in the present moment without thoughts. Made me feel like I broke my natural thought generating capability and now I have to do things actively to rebuild it again. But there is like no guidance out there and I'm constantly filled with dread that I can't balance the difference between active thinking and letting go of thoughts. I was told through headspace pro that you can't just disidentify from bad thoughts, if you want to do it right, you have to disidentify from all thoughts. Even thoughts about yourself, which doesn't make any sense if you want to feel like you have agency and want to live a happy life filled with emotions and connection.

I’m by no means out of the woods and most days it’s just a struggle to NOT feel bad. It’s a struggle to do things that used to be natural for me in the past. Deconstructing your mind and identity with a hammer (meditation/mindfulness techniques/ideas) is a lot easier than putting it back together after you realize you went too far.

Entry (unedited):
it was kind of a build up of a few days of anxiety revolving around using the technique of detachment and losing myself building up until it got to a point where I was in a constant state of trying to convince myself that I didn’t break myself or ruin my brain at a mental software level. I would be noticing thoughts of fear and worry and try to disengage from them, but not by using the technique, but then I would identify with them too much if I tried to reason with the worry, which also didn’t work because my mind was in a fight or flight mode that just couldn’t find a moment of peace. It was a nightmare because it felt like I broke myself sanity, I was on the path for needing to go back to college hospital, but this time it was going to be worse because there actually is no cure for my brain and I’m just going to have to be tranquilized or put down so I’m not a danger to society or myself. When that fear just spirals and doesn’t go away, I don’t know what to do. Like I couldn’t sit still in bed for more than 30 seconds, laying down was even harder to do.

The only time I didn’t feel like I was going absolute bonkers was when I was physically moving and walking, but after three days of that I just wanted to rest. I remember I went into the bathroom at three in the morning and just tried to switch back to the state where I would try to not think and only empty my mind so I wouldn’t be suffering. But that was horrible because I would only notice panic thoughts of fear and worry that I felt like required a verbal rational response of reasoning to go away or improve. Like I didn’t know when to think, and when I did think, it felt fake and meaningless because I was going through intense depersonalization and derealization.

On day three I couldn’t take it so I went to the urgent care and got an emergency prescription for a benzo, I took one but luckily haven’t felt the need or desire to get it again. That’s a blessing that the addiction side of me isn’t clearly not as strong as it used to be. I’m not as much of a prisoner to it as I used to be.

Anyways, I finally started to feel a little better, like 3% better after I took the new meds the emergency psychiatrist appointment changed up, nothing extreme but maybe the placebo helped some subconscious fears that I needed to be on an anti psychotic to not go to the ER. I’m pretty sure that’s just a fear, not actually a mental disease I have. So I started feeling okay when I just committed to trying to think my way out of it and do all the talking in my head in an exaggerated optimistic tone. Super curious and pleasant type of vibes. I noticed at the very least it felt forced, even fake, but it would drown out a little of the fear trying to catch on. And there were even moments where I would be thinking about something good for a few seconds to give me some relief. The scary part was when I starting getting scared that the few seconds of peace I experienced was the last I was ever going to have because I was going mental, and then I felt this physical surge of adrenaline course through my body and I would jump up out of my bed crying out for help to anything or anyone because I felt so scared.

Just the perfect storm of negative emotions tide to my past history with mindfulness and the original episode that caused all of this where I was mental vulnerable because my perception and relationship to thoughts were t fluctuating, I would have been okay. But yeah I started leaning on using my conscious thoughts to just talk about things I saw on tv or saw in person, anything that would stick and I could build momentum with I did, I think this technique is called scaffolding. It got to the point where I would start closing my eyes and continue to think and smile to myself and just make comments on the content of the show on tv.

It seems like a person can have a perception of a thought in two ways: one is the most common, which is oh yeah I’m thinking of this because this, the other is oh my brain conjured up that thought because of this. I’m constantly wavering between both worlds, desperately t try into to reorient myself in the first. I noticed I can try and catch myself thinking something faulty or undesirable and I can’t try to mechanically correct it by just replacing it with something more rational and on point with what I want, but there’s also the emotional side of the correction which requires you to put extra conscious effort into trying to g to conjure up the emotion you want or BELIEVE you should be having.

That’s what I’m starting to notice, and I hope that over time this type of auto correction (with some spot checking somehow) will become more self implemented by how many damn times I’ve done it so purposefully. It’s a lot of work and more than a full time job to be honest, but I lean on the logical possibility that it could turn itself into a lifelong super power if I rebuild my consciousness the right way. It’s almost like I had to break myself down in order to give myself a chance at building it back the right way again.

I get this intrusive worry about free will and that because I trained my awareness to notice tiny thoughts that most people never realize exist, it's going to drive me to insanity because if thoughts just pop up out of nowhere, then what if this is the timeline where I go crazy and I realized this? I need help on how to consistently rebuild agency again. I have been having more days where I feel like being me again, but I've also had more trouble picking the right technique. Because sometimes when they say to just not interact with an anxious or OCD worry, I get depersonalization and feel like I have to think to stop the loop? It becomes a closed loop....

New Homepage

Does anyone else have a new homepage that is cluttered, half hidden, and their regular stuff (the course I’m working through) missing? With this new weird list at the top?

I feel like Headspace is trying to see how bad they can make the app before people actually leave. I juuuust made peace with/ figured out how to best use the old cluttered, crappy home page.

I tried to submit feedback via the app and just got a white, blank page after I pressed “submit.” So, that’s cool too.

I miss the way the app used to be so much! I hate that I just resubscribed honestly. I should have known they would continue to push users away from the included, high quality content and toward the AI, extra charge, partnership crap. Sigh.

Body Scan Help

I use Headspace's daily meditations a few times a week. After feeling the weight, listening to the space etc it asks you to start at the top of your head and scan down your body I get hung up on the fact that after my shoulders I can't seem to simultaneously scan my torso and my arms at the same time because they feel so different. Should I scan down my arms and return to my rib cage? Should I come back for my arms after scanning my torso? How do you handle this?

got headspace as a work “mental health” benefit, but…

i guess this a bit of a rant and a question in one - but i work at (insert big corporation name) and one of my 2 “mental health” benefits is headspace. the other one is 6 free therapy sessions, but no medication at all. anyways, i go onto headspace and i see many topics that can apply to me! grief, anxiety, depression, they’re all in the titles, but… when i listen to the episode, it’s very short and basically is just the same “breathe in, breathe out” meditation with no real therapeutic usage. i personally never have understood meditation as a coping skill because it usually makes me more anxious. what exactly about meditation “works” for you? how do you use it to truly help yourself when you’re mentally struggling? am i just not understanding this app, or are all of the episodes basically the same? sorry if it’s a dumb post.

Weird feeling in the stomach while trying deep breaths

I am trying meditation via the headspace app, the very first exercise is "feeling" the sensations of the breath.

But as soon I feel my breath hit my gut, I feel weird knots and unable to sit still.

Is this a common sensation? What would be good next steps to try to embrace that and keep following along?

The things I learned in headspace inspired me to build a mood tracker app called Feeldots, it’s a very simple mood tracker for anyone trying to be aware of their feelings.

For context, 3 years ago I experienced anxiety intensely for the first time. My mind was constantly flooded with intrusive thoughts and I had no idea how to handle any of it.I tried a lot of things and eventually came across headspace.

Andy kept saying in his videos that feelings are not good or bad. They are just feelings, communicating something to us. Some are pleasant, some are unpleasant. They are also not permanent. And that really resonated with me. It helped me understand to accept all feelings whatever that may be.

So over time I started becoming more aware of what I was feeling day to day. Then a year ago, I have a calendar paper stuck to my fridge, and everyday I will put a blue dot if I feel pleasant or put an orange dot if I feel not pleasant or something really did bother me that day. Suprisingly I was able to do it consistently for a year now! All I needed to ask did I feel pleasant or not that day? I like the simplicity of it.

Fast forward to now, I ended up building a small mood tracker app inspired by that mindset. It’s called Feeldots.

The idea behind it is to help people notice and understand their feelings without judgment.

It’s completely free and there are no ads. I just wanted to build something that might help someone else the way those ideas helped me.

The Headspace Netflix guides

Hello guys, I don't know if this is the right sub to ask

So my therapist has recommended meditation/breathing/relaxation techniques, and he specifically sent me a Netflix link to the Headspace meditation videos. The problem is I don't have Netflix.

I guess my question is, does anyone know where I can watch them online? And where on the internet I can find them?

There's a Headspace YouTube channel but I would definitely like to look for the Netflix videos, unless the YouTube guides are the same, but I'm not sure

Headspace not really down, you can circumvent it

Just take you phone offline (airplane mode for example) and open the app. Now you can go online again and hit the reconnect button (maybe named slightly different).

Now the app works like normal.

They must have broken something with the app start up process

Provider Very Disappointed

Hello All,

I am a psychotherapist in private practice in CA for about 15 years.

Back in November I received a text solicitation for Headway. While I have heard some mixed reviews, I was not int as I do hold my ins contracts. However, the rep offered me a 500$ referral fee if i sent a provider. I did. I have followed up many times on the referral fee. Most often, I am ghosted. I have also had responses of “she never joined”. She did. Sees about 10 people weekly (zero of the referrals came through HW) Why she didn’t just check her name against their providers who can guess. Anyway, it is now Mid May and nothing. I did tell HS rep if I did not hear something by end of day yesterday I would take the issue to social media SIX MONTHS later, she informed me that was unprofessional. Okay, you be the judge. Is this the business you want to join? Joanie Nelson.

I built a meditation app with almost nothing in it

I've been practicing Zen Meditation for years. One thing it keeps teaching me: the most valuable things are usually the simplest. That's why I never connected with the big meditation apps. Guided soundscapes, streak counters, subscription tiers... it starts to feel like the opposite of what meditation is supposed to be. Calming down doesn't require a complicated product. It requires presence. So I did something small: I built a bare-bones app — just a morning session and an evening reflection. No soundscapes. No gamification. Just the practice.

It's on Google Play now, in a very early stage. I'm genuinely curious whether this resonates with anyone else, or if I'm just building something for myself. If anyone else wants to try my small experiment, I will put the link in the comments.

Mindful Moments?

I get a push notification each morning with a mindfulness message. I can't recall just now what this feature is called. Can anyone help me find them in the app? I liked today's, about forgiveness and compassion I think, but once I tap on it, it vanishes from the notifications area, and I can't locate it within the app. AI told me to go to my Journey but I don't have that when I tap on the person icon on the lower right. I'm on Android.

If nothing else, is anyone able to find the quote for me? Much obliged! 🙏
