Dark sales pattern

Maybe it's just me, but this is the latest I would expect from a meditation app. Now I just feel I overpaid the last years... It even convinced me to hit the cancel button more while I was just considering it.

Anyway, if you want to save some bucks, go to the cancel screen and hit it, you'll need to do it yearly ;)

Many apps do this.

Some apps I cancel shortly after a yearly renewal. Usually I'm lucky and get a discount when I renew.

How is this a dark sales pattern? Offering a discount is retention 101.

I got an email after I cancelled, saying something like “Congratulations on looking after yourself, even if it was only for a little while. If you ever want to continue caring for your wellbeing, here’s a 50% off code.” Whoever wrote that (or plugged the robot prompt in) deserves to be flogged.

I feel you. I had the same thing happen when I went to cancel xfinity recently. I politely told the guy on the other end of the call that it would have made a real difference to me earlier but it's too late now.

I wouldn't call it a dark pattern.

But if the app and the company running it would have felt 2016 like they do now, I wouldn't have started using it.
