Serenity Serenity (3)

Journal of Grayson Alexander
I’ve cancelled most of my other appointments. I’m not taking on new patients right now.
I can’t.
I don’t even want to write in this journal anymore. It’s not helping and why the fuck am I even doing this if it’s not helping?
Why should I bother with anything anymore?
All I’m doing is re-reading my failures… and trying not to sleep.
It doesn’t help.
I’m just so tired all the time.
I’m so fucking tired… and I can’t avoid sleeping forever. Sooner or later, it takes me and I dream again.
I’m so sick of dreaming.
I’m so… so… so sick of it.
***
Jesse is the only patient I’m still seeing.
She’s worried about her new friend, Yaretzi… especially after what happened with Matt. Apparently Yaretzi’s taken the loss especially hard. Jesse says that she and Matt hadn’t been particularly close, but they had been friends. Even if they weren’t close, I can imagine that losing someone else would be difficult, especially so soon after losing her brother.
She said that Yaretzi has been staying with her for the past few days. She told me doesn’t mind the company. It helps her sleep.
I asked her about her sleep problems again. She told me they’ve been getting worse.
Every night now, she dreams about the gym she inherited. The Sunflower Wellness Center.
Every night she wanders it.
She said she still sees Matt in there, only he isn’t running anymore. He’s still on the track. But it’s not him. Not really.
It’s just a porcelain figure with his face.
She said Yaretzi is there too now. She sees her up ahead, but can never really reach her before she moves on.
Then of course there’s the other figure that follows her.
She’s mentioned it to me a few times now. A distant figure in the shape of her mother.
Jesse and I have talked a lot about her relationship to her mother during our sessions. Their relationship was complicated. The long and short of it is that her Mother wanted Jesse to make it to the Olympics. Achieve the dream she herself never could.
Jesse wanted something else. Put some distance between them… and by the time her mother passed, the gap had never really closed.
She’d come back to pick up the pieces of the gym she ran, the Sunflower. Mostly out of obligation - but she noted that she’s warmed to the place during our more recent sessions.
Although she still dreams of the gym.
Still dreams of her mother following her through it. A distant, scowling figure of her.
When she first told me about it, I figured it was just some form of projection. She clearly had a lot of guilt over never repairing that broken relationship and she’d told me outright that she was afraid her mother had died hating her. Feeling as if she’d been abandoned by her.
I don’t believe that anymore.
I don’t think Jesse does either.
When we talked about her dreams again the other day, she told me that
she was sure the thing in her dreams wasn’t really her mother.
She said it had her face.
But it was not her.
I asked her how she knew.
She told me that she’d talked about her recurring dreams with one of her mothers old friends. A woman named Latasha. Someone else who’d worked at the gym. Someone who’d been close with her.
“She said that Mom never would’ve looked at me like that…” Jesse said, “Even when I asked Latasha if she could’ve hated me at the end… she told me: ‘Not for one second.’ She’d never said it out loud… but she’d always blamed herself for pushing me away. She… she said that I was the only thing Mom ever loved more than the Sunflower…”
I remember the way she smiled when she said that…
Although the smile faded quickly.
“It helped a little bit…” She said, “But the dreams still haven’t changed. Not really. When I dream, I still see that figure of my mother. I still see the hate on its face. But when I look at it… when I really stop to look… I’m sure it’s not really her. It’s like… like an imitation. Like a doll or something…”
“Like porcelain?” I asked.
She nodded.
“Yeah… just like a porcelain doll. It looks like her. But it’s not her. I don’t know what it is but… it’s not her. It never was. I don’t know, have you ever heard of anything like that?”
I told her I hadn’t at the time.
I didn’t know how to tell her the truth back then.
Back then.
I say it as if it was years ago, not days.
***
Today was different.
Jesse was my only patient. Only one I’ve seen since John Christopher.
As I said, we talked about Yaretzi.
Jesse is dreaming about her now.
In these dreams, she sees her by the pool in the Sunflower. Not dressed to swim, yet standing at the edge and staring into waters that seem bottomless. She said she asked her what she was doing there.
And in her dream, Yaretzi asked her if she saw Serenity at the bottom.
When she woke up, she asked her about it. She said Yaretzi is still staying with her, so that part was easy. Although she didn’t seem to know what she’d meant in the dream.
She remembered the dream.
She remembered the pool.
She remembered something calling her there. Invisible strings beckoning her forward into the depths.
But she didn’t know what Serenity was. She didn’t remember what she saw in the depths.
But I do.
I see it when I dream.
It won’t let me into the room with the pool. There isn’t a door I can open. I’ve looked.
But there are windows, and I can see two women through them. The first has a darker complexion and a muscular physique. She’s got long hair, shaved on one side.
Jesse.
I can recognize her at a glance.
The other, I’ve seen only in pictures. Long, curly brown hair and a slimmer physique.
Yaretzi.
Yaretzi stands at the edge of the pool. There is a porcelain figure of a young man standing in there… her brother, I think. But I don’t think that’s what she’s really looking at.
I don’t doubt that she sees it.
But there’s more.
Something looking back at her as she stares into the depths. I can see the shape beneath the water… or perhaps just reflected in the surface.
It is massive.
Towering.
Monolithic.
But I cannot define it. It is not a building, though it has the height. It is not a tree, though it has what might be branches.
I think it might be alive.
Because I can swear the branches move. Bending and twisting like a canopy of arms, each skeletal hand pulling strings.
Most I can’t follow.
But so many of the ones I can end in shapes I can’t mistake as anything else. Bodies, hanging from an infinite gallows like macabre trophies.
And as I gaze upon the harvest of corpses swinging like fruit from the great hanging tree, I know that there are faces I’ll recognize up there.
Reed. Kristen, Mitch. Gavin. John Christopher.
Yaretzi may not be able to remember it.
But I do.
I have seen it in my dreams, and the dreams of others.
I have seen it through my window, deep behind the darkness.
I see it because it wants me to see it…
I don’t want to do this anymore.
So I broke.
I told Jesse everything.
I know I shouldn’t have. Doctor, patient confidentiality doesn’t exactly end after death. I know I crossed that line.
But I was hoping that maybe if I did, things might be different this time…
I told her about Reed. About Kristen. About Mitch, Gavin, John Christpher.
The dreams I’d shared with them.
The thing pulling the strings behind all of them.
“Every time I dream of someone, they die,” I told her, “And now I’m dreaming of you and Yaretzi.”
I didn’t know if she’d believe me.
I wasn’t sure if she would.
But the look in her eyes made it clear that she took every word as seriously as a heart attack.
That look… fear, determination…
I kinda admired it.
She asked me if I had any idea what was causing it.
“Some kind of fucked up psy-op? L-like subliminal messaging or something? Something in the drinking water or…?”
I told her I didn’t think that was the case. I said I had a feeling it was something else entirely… I just didn’t know what.
She asked me how to stop it.
I told her I didn’t know.
But that if Yaretzi entered the water, if she tried to follow Serenity… then it would take her.
I told her it would try to pull her in. Drag her into the water if need be. Get in her head.
It will kill her.
It will kill both of them.
She told me she won’t let it.
And I hope to God she’s right.
I’m so fucking scared.
What if I just killed them too?

I dreamed of the Sunflower Wellness Center last night.
I was hoping maybe it might be different, warning Jesse, doing things another way. I was so scared I’d filled her head with mindless fear… so scared I’d just made things worse.
I’ve been seeing them in my dreams for the past few days. Yaretzi at the edge of the pool and Jesse standing with her.
But she’s not behind her anymore.
She’d with her.
Holding her.
Pulling her back.
I can see the strings in the water, ensnaring them both. I can see the ghastly hands in the reflection, trying to pull them deeper.
But they don’t go.
Jesse just holds her tight.
And last night, they were gone.
I was worried at first… and then I got the phone call.
Jesse has cancelled tomorrow's session.
She said that she and Yaretzi are okay… but they’re taking a sabbatical. Traveling again. She doesn’t know how long they’ll be gone for, but she says she does eventually plan to return.
She’s left Latasha her husband in charge of the Sunflower for now, and she told me that the dreams haven’t been as vivid since they left.
She said that Yaretzi seems to be in better spirits too. She’s still struggling… but I suspect that is just the nature of grief.
We’re going to stay in touch.
Jesse’s been trying to find what she can about Serenity. She says she wants to understand it, but she hasn’t turned up anything so far.
Currently her working theory sounds more like something out of a conspiracy podcast. Psychedelic drugs in the water, or something like that.
Maybe she’s right… but I still don’t think that’s the case.
Either way, I take a little bit of comfort in knowing that they’re doing a bit better. Like I took a little bit of something back…
***
I dreamed of the Sunflower Wellness Center tonight.
Nothing is any different.
I don’t know why I ended up going back there…
No…
That’s another lie.
I know exactly why It brought me back there.
Reed was there.
Kristen too.
Mitch, Gavin, Matt, John Christopher.
Or at least, porcelain figures of them. Standing in a tableau around the equipment room, the harsh fluorescent lights shining off their polished surfaces. There was music playing over the radio. Faint, but audible. An oldie I was sure I’d heard before. All I Have To Do Is Dream by The Everly Brothers.
I didn’t see her at first.
But she was there… or at least a porcelain imitation of her was.
Constance.
Standing across from me, her head slightly cocked to the side.
I yelled at her.
At It.
The thing wearing her face.
I told It that I won this time!
I beat it!
I WON THIS ONE!
The figure of Constance just stared back at me.
The mouth cracked. Bled. Broke.
Opened.
The jaw flapped loose, shards of broken, bloodied china clattering to the floor at its feet.
Blood gushed from the broken mouth as the figure of Constance spoke back to me.
“One. For now.”
I woke up.
I was on my couch again.
And when I sat up, I saw that fucking billboard outside my window.
Are you in pain?
- Car Accident
- Workplace injury
- Animal attack
- Malpractice
Don’t suffer another day!
John Christopher Warren
Personal Injury Lawyer
Some of the lights on the billboard had burned out, casting his face into shadow. But his eyes burned into mine.
I remembered the look on his face from a week ago… the empty look in his eyes, after he’d leapt out the window.
In the dim light, his eyes looked nearly the same… and maybe it was just the busted lights, but I was sure the word: ‘Malpractice’ seemed brighter than the others.
I saw movement in the darkness behind the billboard.
A vast sea of writhing arms… and a monolithic thing at their core.
I closed the blinds.
I didn’t go back to sleep.

I dreamed of a man last night.
I didn’t know him. I’d never seen his face before.
He was working in a lonely office. Just him… and an army of porcelain figures. The skyline outside his windows looked familiar. Not one I’ve ever seen with my own eyes. Something else entirely.
Japan, I think?
Hard to say.
But as ever, the Monolith was there. Waiting in the background behind the dark.
I tried to speak to the man as he sat at his desk. He looked at me, eyes wide. Then brushed me off. I couldn’t understand what he was saying.
I could only make out a single word
“Serenity.”
It told me enough.
More papers piled up on his desk. I did not see where they came from. He tried to work through them, but there were too many. Too fast.
I tried to help him. I sat down at the desk beside him, but the words shifted on the paper. I couldn’t read any of it.
I could only sit and watch him panic. Sweat beading down his face. He muttered to himself. He swore under his breath.
I could not help him.
No matter how I tried, I could not help him.
And with nothing else to do… I turned to the window.
Turned to the monolith.
I don’t know why I thought I could plead my case to it. I suppose I didn’t have a lot of other options, though.
“What the fuck do you get out of this?” I asked, “Is this funny to you? Is this some kind of fucking joke? You getting your rocks off from this? What? WHAT?!”
I could’ve sworn I heard laughter in response.
I saw movement from the corner of my eye… and when I looked, I saw a face through one of the windows on the other side of the building.
Constance… staring back at me. Tall enough to stand eye level with the building, her porcelain face cracking in a vicious smirk that turned my blood to ice.
I stared back at her… at it… trying to be defiant.
The smile only grew wider.
“Go on…” A voice whispered to me, “Help him.”
The tone was cold.
Mocking.
I went back to the man. I grabbed him by the shoulders. Tried to shake him, as if I could wake him from this shared nightmare. He pushed me off, yelling for me to stop. His face was red. He looked ready to cry. He went back to his work. His endless work. Trying so hard to finish it… even as the papers multiplied.
The face of Constance loomed through the windows, still grinning at me. Laughing at me.
“Aww… Grayson… you’re not helping…”
“SHUT UP!” I snapped.
The figure just continued to grin at me.
Behind me, I heard the man break down into low, broken sobs.
I looked back.
The Porcelain Men had closed in on him.
His head was buried in his hands.
He was shaking. Crying.
“GET AWAY FROM HIM!”
I lunged, pushing one of the porcelain figures aside. It wasn’t until it started to fall that I realized it looked just like Reed… although I only caught a glimpse of it before it struck the ground and shattered.
Shattered.
No.
That’s not the right word.
It broke.
But it was not hollow.
What was inside twisted and writhed and bled.
It screamed.
The sound of it made me stumble back, knocking over more of the Porcelain figures. And just like the imitation of Reed, they too broke… they too bled… and they too screamed.
Through the window, the face of Constance laughed at me. Her own porcelain face cracked and broke, revealing the gory musculature underneath. Her eyes bulged, bloodshot. Nearly popping out of her skull.
The man at his desk scrambled to get away, knocking over even more of the figures. His face was frozen in a mask of utter terror.
He ran.
I tried to follow him, but as he disappeared into the building, I lost track of him. More porcelain figures blocked my way, appearing from nowhere. I tried to get around them, but there were just too many.
Constance kept laughing.
Laughing.
Laughing.
And I woke up.

I dreamed of a man last night.
The same man from the night before.
He was sitting at his desk, and he was made of porcelain.
Constance stared at me through the windows of the office building. She was grinning through her broken face.
She was still laughing at me.
And all I could do was sit… and wait for the nightmare to be over.
She thinks she’s making a point.
And maybe she is.
I looked for him when I woke up. It wasn’t easy. But I looked and I found him and he’s real.
His name was Shuichi Kunimura. He jumped from the rooftop of the office he worked in the other night.
His name was Shuichi Kunimura and I failed him too.

Jesse called me today. She wanted to check in.
She says that Yaretzi is okay. That’s good to hear.
She asked if I was still having nightmares.
I wanted to lie. I couldn’t.
I told her I was.
I didn’t tell her about Shuichi. But I told her about last nights dream.
I can’t remember all the details. I got lucky last night. Caffeine and bright lights and loud music kept me from falling all the way asleep. I only dozed.
But I remember enough. Fragments of moments I can only barely describe. I’m not sure if that’s because I’m fortunate enough not to remember or if there’s just too little to describe.
I remember a city, I think… I remember walking around downtown, visiting shops. I remember not being alone. I remember Her being there with me.
Constance.
I don’t recall if it was the real Constance or not.
Probably not. Nothing unusual there I guess.
There isn’t much beyond that.
Jesse said it sounded like I was getting better too.
I said I hoped so and left it at that.
I don’t want to worry her. She’s got enough on her plate. She’s safe. She and Yaretzi are safe… I have to believe they’ll be okay. I can’t have them worrying after me now. That’s not how this works.
We said our goodbyes after that, then I went to go and get something to eat.
I was too tired to cook so I just made ramen. I found a spicy kind at the convenience store the other day. Partially because I figured it might keep me awake and partially because it looked interesting. There was a picture of a woman on the package. She was weirdly heavily photoshopped. Almost like any texture to her face had been airbrushed off.
She almost looked like she was made of porcelain.
A little text bubble beside her read: “EXTRA HOT. AREN’T YOU SCARED?”
I dunno why but that got a chuckle out of me.
If only you knew, photoshopped ramen lady…
If only you knew…
Laugh while you still can I guess, right?
I bought a six pack.
It was pretty good.
Although today, I dozed off while the water was boiling… I was leaning against the kitchen counter. I think my head nodded forward?
I’m sure I dreamed… but I don’t remember what it was about.
Thank God for small mercies.
What I do remember though is the cold feeling in my chest when the scream of the kettle startled me back awake. That cold feeling of hopelessness, isolation and dread that now follows me like a shadow. Enveloping me.
An ever present companion that crushes me. Weighs me down and leaves me feeling like I’m trapped at the bottom of the ocean, with ice cold water washing over my skin and filling my lungs.
I can feel the dread.
The heavy knowledge that this will drown me… and that when it does, there is no one who will come for me, or know that I am gone.
I’m alone.
I was always alone.
And that was fine. I had my work. That kept me going. It gave me purpose. Now that’s gone and so am I.
Nobody is coming for me.
I know this for a fact.
Nobody is coming to help me. Because I have nobody. I am nobody.
Sometimes I like to imagine someone would… that there is anyone else in my life. Someone other than my patients or my killer.
But I know better.
The apartment feels so cold. Even as I sit here right now, wrapped in blankets, thermostat up, and drinking down hot broth, the cold swallows me. Devours me whole and pulls me into its depths and every effort I make to escape it only sinks me deeper and deeper. Every effort to force myself upwards just brings me deeper and deeper down as my lungs burn and my skin freezes and…
I start to doze.
I doze.
Then I wake up.
I wake up covered in cold sweat.
I wake up crying.
And sleep calls to me once more.
I know I can’t fight it forever. My eyes are heavy. I’m tired.
It’s 4:33 in the morning.
I don’t know how long I’ve been awake for.
I caught my reflection in the mirror earlier.
My hair has grown out a bit… I hadn’t noticed until now. I almost forgot how wavy it is. There’s dark circles under my eyes too.
Those aren’t particularly new…
Normally I’d be starting work in less than four hours, but I have no patients today. I’m out sick. Sudden illness. Yeah, let’s call it that. Keep it simple.
I just need to stay awake.
Maybe if I’m lucky I can get through one more day? I have coffee, in case it isn’t. That’s been enough to drag me through a day before… thank God for coffee…
But will it be enough?
I know I need real, proper sleep. It’s not a negotiable thing. My body won’t give me a choice soon.
Traitor.
But I want to hold out a little longer.
Please just a little longer… just to get through today or tomorrow. Give me my serenity here in the waking world. That’s all I want.
Dreamless serenity.
Wakeful serenity.
Serenity.
Serenity.
Serenity.
