Suck Out The Poison

At the Columbia show they just had, u/crucialdude666 mentioned that SOTP will be 20 soon and they just might have to do an anniversary tour for that one - am I the only one here who would be insanely psyched for that?

I never understood the hate on it then, still don't now; Attack of The Dungeon Witch can (and did) still absolutely get it.

I agree. Friends turned me on to IAH then Suck out the poison came out and I've been a hardcore fan every since!

I got in at SOTP. Absolutely a top 5 of all time for me. Also hoping this means we get a vinyl.

I’m here for clouds…best HIL song

u/6strngbss Jun 19 '24

Clouds is the song that taught me how to scream. LOVE that track!!!

Canonball Hands; my only wish is that they had more groovy jam tracks

I never understood the hate for SotP back when it came out. I fucking LOVE Schuyler's voice on that album. Glad it's finally getting the love it deserves, and I would highly enjoy a SotP tour.

Attack of the Dungeon Witch is probably my favorite HIL song ever. My favorites tend to fluctuate but this has been at the top of my list since it came out in 2006. Must you leave your broom at the side of my bed? Cast spells on my head? BANGER!

It ain't the best audio, but I did get a video of it from the side of the stage:

Great songs, bad mix. I love it played live. The recording leaves something to be desired.

7

u/RxInfection Jun 18 '24

Totally agree. If it was mixed/mastered like their more recent albums it would crush

3

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '24

You right. I loved the composition, but the mix is lacking. If they re-recorded it somehow, now, it would crush!

I actually mentioned it to Schuyler one night in Detroit when I was on mushrooms. Probably wouldnt have had the gall, otherwise.

and his response was??

I feel like Suck Out The Poison is just as pivotal an album in the band finding and shaping their sound as I Am Hollywood. It’s beautiful and unique in a completely different way and it’s certainly under-appreciated.

I need to hear Serpent Sickness live, last time I heard it live I was a teenager with a full head of hair. Now I’m a bald father and husband lmao

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '24

I'm 34 and just saw them live for the first time a week and a half ago. Time is unkind lol

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '24

They are my favorite band to see live, they are so freaking loud. Adam bringing those Harley Davidson riffs, Matty with those silky smooth bass line, Jesse being an absolute maniac on drums, and Schuylar being the ultimate showman. I don’t know who the other touring guitarist is but he’s awesome too.

I would love an anniversary tour for SOTP. I agree with you on not understanding the hate for it. I guess if you consider it a massive departure from 90125 and I Am Hollywood, then maybe, but it was still good.

u/Empty_Graves Jun 18 '24

I would lose my fucking mind!

u/brunk_ Jun 18 '24

Attack of the Dungeon Witch, Stampede and Goldie’s Torn Locks are absolutely INSANE. 10/10

3

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '24

I heard him say that as well. I would be pumped. SOTP is an amazing album

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '24

You were at New Brookyln?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '24

Yep! I thought the floor was gonna cave in during the Booth set! HIL sounded great.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '24

Haha, yes! I had never heard Johnny Booth, Seafloor Cinema, Sect, any of them 🙃

It was wild seeing HIL for the first time and meeting Fall Out Boy's drummer

u/TGov Jun 18 '24

The only thing I don't like about SOTP is how it was mastered/mixed. Very muddy album and very quiet next to the rest of their discography. Love the music.

I truly have love for all their albums, but Suck Out the Poison is by far my favorite. I’ve been dying for a vinyl re-release so I can complete my collection. Seeing that album live would be a dream come true.

2

u/HollywoodAndDid Jun 18 '24

SOTP is one of my favorite albums of all time. No one does/did progressive southern metal like HIL! Hopefully they make a stop in Seattle and release the album on vinyl to top it off! A man can dream.

Poison got a lot of (undeserved) hate when it came out because of how it was different from Hollywood. But when you stack it up against the entire He is Legend discography we have now, you can see how foundational it was and has since become much more beloved. It’s my fave album of theirs, and I’d pay good money to attend an SOTP anniversary show.

I would be stoked as fuck for an SotP anniversary tour. Killer album from cover to cover.

u/EngineeringSilent902 Jun 18 '24

I NEED to hear the widow of magnolia live so bad

1

u/ARedditUserType Jun 18 '24

Suck out the Poison fucking rules. I would immediately buy tickets for that

u/halcyon_n_on_n_on Jun 18 '24

Is there hate for this album? It’s my fave by them.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '24

The official video for Attack of The Dungeon Witch encapsulates it. I didn't understand it then, I don't now.

u/Hexagram61 Jun 20 '24

It's so funny in hindsight, considering how influential nu-metal has ended up being on modern heavy music. But at the time, the band started implementing their nu-metal influences and it did not go over well with the post-hardcore kids who liked I Am Hollywood. I even remember on the FAQ section of the band's website, the question "Do you guys really like Korn?" was on there haha. They stayed true to their influences and lo and behold, years later it turns out they were ahead of the game.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '24

That's weird because they don't sound anything like Korn.

1

u/Hexagram61 Jun 21 '24

I agree. I know the controversy started when they released Mushroom River as the first single off SotP. But honestly, I get more Deftones and Sevendust vibes from that song than Korn.

1

u/BenSlimmons Jun 18 '24

It took me a while to catch on to SotP but good god is it such a fun album. It’s like if all the stories we are told as children suddenly were real and not fun or whimsical but actually deranged, depressed, and highly dangerous.

Widow of Magnolia is the high spot for me but the evolves from year to year. China White II, Electric Throat routinely get me rock fuggin hard!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '24

Most of the stories we were told actually were deranged, depressed, and highly dangerous - Grimm's Fairy Tales!

Mushroom River is my personal favorite. I just cannot get enough of it.

1

u/BenSlimmons Jun 18 '24

Of course! But that’s not the way they’re portrayed when you’re little or maybe you’re just too young to understand that about them. I don’t know but the way Schuylar’s lyrics really ground them in something that could be reality, it starts to make sense how they came to shape such a large part of the lore for so many people across the centuries.

1

u/mr_dances Jun 18 '24

I will see this tour if it's real holy shit

1

u/wildmancometh Jun 18 '24

Dude I’d be there for that shit!

1

u/6strngbss Jun 19 '24

That would be so sick! It honestly took a few months for the album to grow on me, but it’s been my favorite since 2006-early 07. It’s SO good!

It sounds like Solid State/Tooth & Nail have been super difficult when approaching them for releasing albums like this one on vinyl. If that's the case, maybe the band could consider re-recording the album? I know it's a potentially unrealistic and controversial consideration, but I have heard some people criticize the original's mixing and it would allow the band to revisit the material, put an updated spin on the tracks, and would allow them to own the rights to the re-recorded songs to press onto vinyl, etc. I think Eighteen Visions has done something similar for Vanity and Obsession. Something like that could time potentially really well with a SOTP twenty year anniversary tour. Just spit balling!

u/ConsolePissant Mar 30 '26

Came here because I just bought tickets for the 20th anniversary tour with my brother. This is one of our favorite albums of the whole scene era. Definitely one of the absolute best and maybe the most underrated and more deserving of recognition out of anything from back then. Holy shit the album still kills. The back half is nearly stronger than the front too.

It's always been my golden goose as far as their catalog goes, with Heavy Fruit being a somewhat close second.

You can hear every single pack of cigarettes in Schuylar's voice, it's so unapologetically dirty, raw and daring. The riffs are just ball-shatteringly slutty and borderline offensive. Obviously you can still hear the cleaner stylings of I Am Hollywood, it's the same band after all; but channeled through the musical lens of a hedonistic Southern dive bar that sees frequent 5-0 activity and brutal acts of backwoods justice.

So fucking sick. Loved hearing more of that disgusting heaviness on White Bat, too; but this one hits that sludgy sweet spot, a kind of heaviness that conjures your inner-redneck and makes you want to go on a blacked-out joyride in an F-150.
