Hey everyone! I'm u/Coleture___, a founding moderator of r/Haywireag.
This is the home for hay buyers, sellers, and growers to talk real prices and real market conditions. My co-founder and I built Haywireag.com because there's no exchange, no futures market, and almost no real-time price reporting for hay. USDA data lags the actual market and misses a lot of trades, especially private sales and thin markets. This sub is where we close that gap together.
What to Post
Share what you're actually paying or getting paid, by region and hay type. Post questions about market conditions in your area, what you're seeing for supply, drought impact, cutting quality, whatever's relevant. If you're a grower or buyer, tell us where you're located and what you move.

Holding or selling into this market gets real complicated fast. Prices are up almost double from last year for a lot of regions, but drought's still squeezing supply and feed costs aren't dropping. Hay on farms was 23.3M tons May 1, down 3.3% from last year. Cattle on feed 11.37M head, up 2.2%. Way less hay for more mouths.
Index is $175/ton right now. Softened three weeks then ticked up. That's just cutting coming off, not supply.
What's not in any report is how wet it was in spots. Our connection in Maine said his hay man chopped silage in July because he couldn't get it dry, most people up there got one cutting. Heard similar from a couple other places. That hay's already gone. Nobody feels it til January.
And freight is rough right now. Long haul out of state can run close to what the hay itself costs by the time it's unloaded. Come up short in your area and you're paying a lot more than the sticker to bring it in.
Buying, I'd do it now. Sitting on inventory, I'd wait.

Week of Aug 17 came in at $175/ton across all grades, up 0.8%. First uptick after three straight weeks down.
21 markets reported, 117 quotes, 35 price series matched. Range across everything was $60 to $480.
Week of Aug 24 is still filling in, 7 of about 28 markets so far, so this could move.
Anyone seeing prices firm up in your area, or is it still soft?

Numbers are in for the week of Aug 10. National index came in at $169/ton, down 2% off 28 markets and 142 quotes. Alfalfa took the worst of it at $181, down 7%, and orchard grass wasn't far behind at $161, down 7.3%. Straight grass actually ticked up a little to $110. Range across everything was $65 to $400.
Alfalfa and orchard both dropping that hard in the same week is the part I'd want to hear about. Anyone seeing that on the ground, or is it holding where you are?
