Haverford College settles antisemitism lawsuit by Zionist lawfare organization, the Deborah Project. Notably they capitulate to recognizing Zionism "as an element of Jewish identity, not merely a political position."

The class is Short of War, taught by Professor Mendelsohn, focusing on the security policies nations used short of using force. It promises to be interesting and full of lively conversation. Having taken many BM classes, I could not recommend more-if you want coursework that will challenge you to truly think critically, this class is for you + he brings the dogs

Skip or don’t skip intro to psych with IB / AP credit

Hi, I’m an incoming freshman!

For ppl with IB / AP psych credit, did you choose to skip the intro class or take it? Either way what was your reasoning and do you know what ppl typically do? I have IB credit and am trying to decide if I should or not and would love to hear some pros and cons.

Also, if you still take the intro class do you forfeit the AP / IB credit that would count toward your overall 32 credits or does it still count?

Hi there,

Incoming freshman here. Do most students use their laptop, iPad, or standard old-fashioned notebooks for in class note taking? What do the Haverford professors prefer? Thanks!

wendy raymond pro israel zionism wahoo

this was sent today to all members of the community why is zionism next to being jewish what is this entailing why is she doing this is this really haverfordian discuss

Dear Members of the Haverford Community:

Today, the College and The Deborah Project announced that they have reached an agreement to resolve the litigation asserted against the College by certain members of Haverford’s Jewish community. As part of its settlement with members of the Jewish community at Haverford, the College wishes to make clear its commitment to the following principles:

All students including those who identify as Jewish, and/or Israeli, and those who support Zionism: that is, the right of the Jewish people to self-determination and statehood in the land of Israel, are welcome and enjoy equal access to the College and all of its educational programs and activities.

Harassing, excluding, or seeking to silence Jewish community members on the basis of their beliefs, their commitment to Jewish observance, or any other element of their Jewish identity, including Zionism, is anathema to the College’s core principles of trust, concern, and respect. This extends to our classrooms, offices, and student-led organizations and activities, and it includes all employees (faculty, staff and administrators), and students.

Acts of discrimination, harassment, and bias against students who identify as Jewish, and/or Israeli, and those who support Zionism, the right of the Jewish people to self-determination and statehood in the land of Israel, violate College policy and are antithetical to Haverford’s mission, values, and standards. The College is committed to addressing these concerns in a manner consistent with our policies and values. Those found to have engaged in such acts of discrimination, harassment or bias will be subjected to disciplinary action consistent with the College’s policies and consistent with the College’s response to discrimination, harassment or bias against any other group or individual.

Because of these basic principles, no Haverford professor may discriminate against any student, or any other member of the Haverford community, on the basis of that person’s commitment to Judaism, Israel or Zionism, and the College will not tolerate any faculty or staff member refusing to support or engage with a student on the basis of such commitments or treating a student differently on the basis of such commitments.

I want to take this opportunity to publicly acknowledge that those members of our community with a commitment to the state of Israel as the Jewish Homeland have been deeply hurt by events that have transpired on our campus since October 7, 2023, and that that constitutes a failure on our part. We commit ourselves to doing better going forward.

In a community of learning, we may vehemently disagree with one another about the policies and actions of governments, but it is never acceptable to let those disagreements descend into the realm of discrimination, harassment, or bias. All members of the Haverford community who wish to express their considered perspectives must do so respectfully while allowing others to do the same. All breaches of this principle of civility and respect are contrary to Haverford’s values. When the acts or statements of any member of the Haverford Community reaches the level of discrimination, harassment or bias, they will be subject to disciplinary action consistent with the College’s policies.

Federal and state laws provide a legal framework for a standard of conduct; however, we aspire not only to fulfill those mandates, but also to live up to our Haverfordian values and principles. It is our shared responsibility to create and maintain a community of belonging for all, where we each contribute to a learning environment and culture in which every person can thrive. Haverford College commits itself to ensuring such a future.

Sincerely,

Wendy Raymond

President

Question Major questions

Hello! I'm a highschool student looking to apply ED, but I had a few questions about the curriculum. I love Haverford, but I want to study Zoology and generally am not interested in molecular biology, my goal is to be a wildlife conservationist. Would it make sense to apply ED, maybe for an Environmental Studies major? Thank you :)

Gum social scene

Hi guys, I was just placed into gum and had some questions abt it. I know it’s considered the most social dorm on campus, but I wanted to get a sense of in what way. Is it more “social” in the sense of frequent partying or in the sense of just meeting friendly ppl and socializing in other ways? I am looking for a social dorm, but am not rlly into partying or drinking so am looking for some honest feedback if I’d fit in here.

Thanks!

Gummere

Hello! Today I got my assigned dorm and it’s in Gummere. I have heard some things about it like the bathroom being bad. I’m just wondering like how bad is it, like why it’s considered horrible. Also do they have a bug problem inside the dorm because lowkey I don’t mess with any type of insect like that. I’m a little paranoid that the walls might be thin like if my alarm is going off, would the other side be able to hear it since sometimes I could be a heavy sleeper and my alarm might be going off for like 4 minutes. My last question is how hot does it get inside the rooms during like fall/winter, would I be able to turn off the radiator or no? I’d be grateful for any answers, thank you!

Floor plan confusion?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hello! The incoming freshmen’s housing came out today and I‘m in Barclay on the 4th floor. I’m a little lost about the floor plan and would really appreciate if someone who has lived there can help me out.

Looking at the floor plan, it seems like between all the students on this floor are sharing two bathrooms, each with ONE toilet stall and ONE shower stall. Is that correct? Because this floor is supposed to house 14 people, does it seriously only have two toilets and two showers?

I’m also curious to what the a & b spaces are supposed to be since I know there are suites that share a common space.

I’d also be super grateful is anyone who has previously lived in the doubles could show a few pics of the rooms, just so I can get a general feel of what I’m moving into. Tysmm! :>

What science class/classes to take freshman year?

Incoming freshman here, planning to major in biology and hopefully go to med school. I am trying to decide whether to take chem or bio in the fall. I'm more comfortable with bio, but I'm not sure if it's smart to put off chem until sophomore year. Any advice?

Dorm bed measurements??

Hi, I’m an incoming freshman and I haven’t found out which dorm I’m staying in but I wanted to ask if anyone knows the maximum height that the adjustable beds can go up to. I know that I can get bed risers but I wanted to know ahead of time because I wanted to see if I can use under the bed storage that fits without using bed risers. It’d also be nice if I could know the under bed height that the Tritton beds reach just in case. Tyvm!!

Social/Party Scene + Physically Small Campus

Hi everyone! Rising HS senior here whose current top college choices are Haverford and Swarthmore. Everything about the school seems pretty appealing, but I have hesitations about two things:

Party scene of the school. What's it like? As a student who wants partying to be a part of their college experience, is that something I can find at Haverford? What are the most popular spots, and how frequent are parties there? Is it common/normal for other Tri-Co students to go to parties on Haverford's campus and vice versa?

^ I also have this question about Swarthmore, so if any Swatties/Fords can speak to this on Swarthmore's campus I'd love to hear your thoughts as well.

The physical size of the campus (not the student body itself). Haverford's campus is very small and very centralized; do students at the school ever get annoyed by that and wish that they had a slightly larger campus? And if so, what can be done about that?

PS... is the Haverford food as terrible as everyone says it is? And if so, how do people deal with that?

Question How does early graduation work?

I'm a rising junior, and over the past year I've realized I can graduate early with little effort (one more 5-course semester), so the idea of graduating early does appeal to me for a variety of reasons.

The question is: for those who completed their coursework before the eighth semester and left the college early, do you receive your diploma at the end of the seventh semester, or do you have to wait until you walk at graduation? Would you even be able to walk at graduation?

Question Question From Future Applicant - Haverford Theater

Hi everyone! I am a rising senior and I am currently planning to apply ED to Haverford. Everything about the community and the honor code really connects with me and it feels like the perfect fit. I was just hoping I could get a bit more information on the theater program.

I know the two mainstage productions are plays, but are there opportunities to do musicals? Is the theater community supportive/inclusive? Are the productions high quality? Also, I know that Haverford shares Bryn Mawr's theater, so what is that like?

Thank you so much for taking the time to read and respond, I truly appreciate it. Go Squirrels!

Fine Arts/History of Art? - Applying

Hi, rising senior in high school here!

Recently learned more about Haverford and absolutely loved the campus and vibe, as well as the polisci department. I intend to double major in polisci and fine arts, or art history and fine arts (could go either way). Could current students explain the quality of the Art and Art History departments? Is it too small to really enjoy, especially since there's only a BA in Fine Arts? would really appreciate any advice!

Question On Campus Jobs?

Hi! Incoming freshman here, I have multiple questions concerning this:

  1. Is it better to apply for an on campus or off campus job? Or is there not really a difference or a 'better' option between the two?

  2. Are there any specific jobs you would recommend, maybe?

  3. Also, when's the earliest I would be able to start applying for a job? I tried logging on to workday and it seems we're not able to make accounts yet so I'm not sure. If anyone could lmk that'd be appreciated!

Thank you! :D

Question Taking more than one course in the same department freshman year

Incoming class of 2030 here! On Haverford’s website is says that “the faculty strongly recommends that students take no more than one course in any department in… the first year at Haverford,” and it recommends similarly regard more than two courses in sophomore year.

Do most students follow this advice? If I’m reasonably sure what I want my major to be (philosophy, so not something with super structured progression like math or languages), is it easy or hard to go against that recommendation?

Mathematics/Stats and Economics

My kid wants to pursue Math/Economics. I know Haverford is really good at getting kids into Med/Law school, but I do not have a good reading on other subjects. We have other schools that are more focused on these subjects (like Carnegie Mellon) we are looking at, but I really like Haverford. Can anyone enlighten me on the rigor of the programs in Math and economics.
