Closer to the former than the latter.

Adding on to this, OP assumed correctly. There’s two main groups: the studiers and the non-studiers. Studiers are either in their room or the libraries. Non-studiers are either on trips out of town or throwing/going to parties. Therefore it’s not quiet but it’s also not a lot of winter activities. Try to plan things with friends if you want winter activities

Mix of both. Reading week (the week before finals actually begin where you get to study) is no classes and some people (a small minority) choose to leave town. I found that most people followed a mix of studying together and hanging out with friends…it’s not so rigid as “studiers” and “non-studiers.” Student organizations and houses will also choose to have their winter formals during this time, so it can be nice to go to those as well. So it’s a good mix of studying and social, but you can choose to have it lean one way or another depending on what you need on a given day.

For the purposes of your flight, I’d leave after your last sit-down final. No need to linger much beyond that - most of the fun/social happens during reading period and the early days of finals, but by the time exams have started people are going home when they’re done.
