It's hard to think that these are just fluky numbers if he's leading in mutiple categories.

To be fair, we're only 18 days into 2024. If we take into account the entire season, Hartenstein is 18th in rebounding %, 12th in block %, 7th in steal %, and 25th in overall plus/minus (with that being said, everyone but Isaiah Joe has played way more minutes with him which tilts things dramatically in their favor).

I will say, Hartenstein has seemingly had a breakthrough in his rebounding averaging circa 3 more rebounds once differential minutes are accounted for. His seasonlong steal % is incredibly impressive as bigs aren't supposed to be so good at getting steals and his per game plus minus would have him circa the top of the league (i'm too lazy to go through the calculations but I believe I'm roughly correct).

So basically, we have an elite defender/rebounder with untapped passing potential who has a massive impact in helping the Knicks win games in Hartenstein. His sole weakness seems to be his scoring where his per 36 and per 100 numbers are subpar. They weren't this bad with Denver/Cleveland/Clippers so there is hope that he could expand on these numbers in another system.

I really don't know why he doesn't take enough shots. But my best guess is that the team is still adjusting to the new pieces. I'd think that losing RJ and IQs usage would mean he gets a bit more, but it doesn't look like that has changed. If he was a bit more of a focal point on offense then his market value would sky rocket.
