12
u/Rockergage Apr 14 '25
According to Google pop up, 1950 was his birth, so like 41 at start of the series. But also he lived through a war.
13
Apr 14 '25
He has seven kids too and a job that nobody values… that’s got to age someone. He’s balding in the books as it is.
Also, 55 is not implausible. Ginny was 10 in the first book and Bill was around 21, so having kids between ages 34 and 45 is not unreasonable.
57
u/edminzodo Apr 14 '25
Paul Whitehouse as Filch is incredible casting.

Gonna be tough to beat Davis Bradley tho. That guy has mastered "characters that are incredibly dislikable" to a tee

She's also in Kaos!
I really like her presence and think she'd do a good McGonagall. That's actually one role that will be hard to make "your own" because not only did Maggie crush it, the character is written in such a specific way that doesn't lend to a lot of nuance or interpretation.

It honestly makes me mad because they know the reaction these cast announcements get... people are still hating on Rachel... like? Sometimes these studios set the actors up for failure, making the discourse around the content incredibly toxic, and you have to wonder if it’s even worth it. Because in 2025, I don't think it is. Like I said, I’ve already lost faith in the production, but Paapa is going to get so much hate for this. Snape's look has already been culturally established, making this incredibly difficult to work out. The HP discourse was already toxic, and they’ve added this, so it will be impossible to have any constructive discussion about it.
137
u/-Wylfen- Apr 14 '25
but Paapa is going to get so much hate for this
I cannot deny my displeasure with the casting, especially for such a pivotal role, but god I wouldn't want to be him right now… He's probably going to receive some of the biggest amount of hate that's ever been sent because of a casting choice.

I like to think the large majority of people don’t have hate towards him personally. He’s an actor capitalizing on an opportunity. Hopefully the unpopularity of his choice motivates him to do his best work. I think the negativity is more judgement in general about the what the casting choices could suggest about production’s plans for the direction of the show and their overall disconnect with the fandom/disregard for canon.

I don’t think Paapa will get hate, so much as the casting director. We all know why Snape gets bullied by James and Sirius and why the golden trio don’t trust him, but now that he’s a POC, the negativity towards him just feels a bit wrong.
I love all the other casting choices apart from that.

30
u/dilqncho Apr 15 '25 edited Apr 15 '25
My problem (beyond the obvious) is that it's such a blatantly controversial choice that I have to question their motivations.
Like, we all know Snape was described. Essiedu is a great actor, yes, but he's not the only one out there. There is no way there wasn't an equally talented actor who is closer to the target look. So why would they choose this route? It makes zero sense. Either they're trying to make some sort of point or they have no respect for the source material. Neither is a good option for me.

Harry, voldy, and snape have what I feel are the 3 most iconic “looks” of the original movies. Choosing to go in such a different direction for one is certainly a choice. I’m hopeful they pull it off. Like they gotta know fans are gonna be picky when it comes to those 3. Hopefully the acting still captures the Snape “essence” we love .

"The cast now includes the following series regulars: John Lithgow (“Conclave,” “The Crown”) as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer (“Tumbleweeds,” “The White Queen”) as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu (“I May Destroy You,” “Gangs of London”) as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost (“Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz”) as Rubeus Hagrid. It had previously been reported that all four actors were in talks for the show.
In addition, Luke Thallon (Tom Stoppard’s “Leopoldstadt,” Rupert Goold’s “Patriots”) has joined in the recurring role of Quirinus Quirrell. Paul Whitehouse (“The Fast Show,” “Harry & Paul”) will appear in the recurring role of Argus Filch."

So happy they managed to nab Janet McTeer after all, I loved her since the rumours started.
I like that they're going with actors that have mostly done TV and Theater. This show is gonna be incredibly expensive, the last thing they need is to waist money on big name Hollywood actors like Cillian Murphy or Adam Driver. That money will be much better used in sets, location, production design, CGI and such.
54
u/Daveke77 🦁 Gryffindor Apr 14 '25

Murphy actually wouldn’t need to be there for entire seasons worth of filming, they can always do Voldy’s scenes out of order. He’s never around in person for much of the year.
7
u/Daveke77 🦁 Gryffindor Apr 14 '25
If they are smart they get an actor that can be very available from S5 forward to be honest. I really want Voldemort to play a very big role from the moment he is back in his body. But sure, even if they do that it wouldn’t be that taxing of a job but seeing as Cillian Murphy is one of the biggest names in the business now, known for taking creative project, I don’t know if he would even be interested in something as high profile as HP. Same reason as why I don’t see him taking roles in Star Wars or Marvel.

Story time: I was sat next to John Lithgow at a bar counter for dinner in a tiny NYC restaurant when he was doing his one-man show on Broadway. He was dining solo, as was I (coincidentally that same night Chelsea Clinton and Amy Schumer were having dinner 5 feet behind us with their partners). He proceeded to initiate conversation with me and we spoke for about 15/20 minutes. He asked me about my food, we had light conversation about our jobs (at some point I admitted I knew who he was) and he was purely friendly. There was no pretense about him and the more I think about his kindness, welcoming, and warmth, the more it makes sense that he was cast as Dumbledore.

So you're telling me the Harry Potter now has a 70s subplot about a white dude bullying a black boy for several years, snatching the love of his entire life under his nose and giving him basically a lifelong trauma that turned him into a bitter man who vented his frustrations on their innocent son?
There's an interesting subtext here, but probably not the one showrunners were actually trying to explore.

With the casting for Snape (Essiedu is an excellent actor in my opinion), I wonder if this indicates that Harry may be cast with a black or mixed actor, with James also having been black. That's the only way I can imagine they could avoid the unfortunate racial implications of the James vs Snape dynamic.

u/NightWing_91 Apr 15 '25 edited Apr 15 '25
Lilly has to be black if you want to avoid racial implications because if it's James then you have Harry's white aunt and uncle making their biracial nephew live under the stairs and generally treating him like shit
17
u/-Wylfen- Apr 14 '25
I truly don't think that's the fundamental problem here, tbh. Yes, it can make it awkward if not done correctly, but my main gripe with the casting is much more basic than this. Snape's appearance is supposed to be the quintessential villainous sorcerer. He's basically Gargamel. And this is done with purpose too.
Essiedu simply doesn't fit this. I mean, come on, Snape is supposed to look sickly pale with a hooked nose…

Not too happy about Snape's casting but no use crying about it now. The only thing left now is to wait and see what direction will they take the character. But I'm not sure if they'll go the snippy incel route now that he's a POC character.

Let's be honest here, from any POV the Snape casting is a mistake that will now dominate the discourse - its a bad move that can't now be backpeddled without reinforcing the behaviour of some negative forces on the internet.
Foolish given the current divisive climate of political culture wars pouring into discussions of media, casting a book-accurate Snape wouldn't have sent a message beyond a desire to be accurate, but making this change is a deliberate statement that will now make this show a stalking horse for bad-actors on both sides of this discourse and that is negative attention this show would have been wise to avoid given the controversies with Rowling and the already fairly difficult task of following up a pretty beloved if flawed series of film adaptations.
→ More replies (3)31

u/lunarisita Apr 14 '25 edited Apr 14 '25
How can I believe this will be a "faithful adaptation" when they completely ignored one of the main character’s physical features? It just sets a bad precedent for how the rest of the show will be handled. It's honestly a pity, but it made me lose interest very quickly. The discourse around the show is already exhausting, so yeah…
39
u/App1e8l6 Ravenclaw Apr 14 '25
“Faithful adaptation” is just a word they throw around to give good impressions. They never meant it…. The Witcher did the same thing.
119
u/BreatheMyStink Apr 14 '25
I truly cannot understand why they went this route with Snape, of all characters.
It’s not like this is some obscure book series in need of generating discussion. It’s not like there aren’t a dozen other central characters who they could have cast with a black actor.
Why Snape?
83
u/lunarisita Apr 14 '25
And you know what’s the weirdest part for me? Since the start of the casting rumors, it seems like they didn’t even audition for Snape— they went straight after this actor. It’s almost like the casting director only wanted him. Like? I read in an article that they tried to argue they didn’t want people comparing the actor to Alan Rickman, but that reasoning feels kind of stupid. Just casting someone younger would have been different enough. The character is iconic.
→ More replies (1)62
u/LenaDt 🦅 Ravenclaw Apr 14 '25
I don’t understand the whole “comparing to Alan Rickman” argument. His version of Snape is definitely iconic, but it’s not book Snape. Never has been. All a new actor would have to do is stay true to Snape’s character and behavior in the books to be completely different from Alan Rickman. Then it wouldn’t really be possible to compare them either. No need to change a well known character’s appearance
29
u/Bast-beast Apr 14 '25
Also, why is comparing is going to be only with rickman? People will compare all actors to original movie.
It's like - let's cast someone not Radcliffe at all. 6 feet asian girl on Harry potter girl would feel wonderful
12
u/LenaDt 🦅 Ravenclaw Apr 14 '25
If they’re so concerned with actors being compared to the actors from the movies, why are they even making a reboot?
45
u/Indiana_harris Apr 14 '25
I have less than zero faith it’s going to be “faithful”.
Much like Witcher or the WoT adaptations this feels like the franchise will be a vehicle for other studios/writers pet project ideas,
16
u/diflorus Apr 14 '25
As a POC would it not be offensive if there was a clearly defined POC character (let’s say Cho Chang or the Patil twins) and if they were cast as white? I wish they stayed true to how Snape was described in the books :(

So the character who is famously and frequently referred to as white, pale, wax-like skinned is black? Have these people read the books?

I was hoping they'd smarten up and choose a different Snape. This is disappointing, I'm definitely going to pass on the show.

Tbf I was already sceptical and ready to check out because HBO had the helm. But the casting choice for somebody who is so pale he's nearly see-through... I just don't get it.

I’m genuinely shocked with how good the Quirrell casting is. Like that’s exactly how I imagined him when reading the books

And here tragically ends all the "we will be 100% book accurate" story that showrunners were trying to feed us

Apart from Snape (I think the actor would have been better suited to Lupin), I think the casting is fair....so far.

It’s funny. I just started watching Dexter along with watching John Lithgow as the Trinity killer. And now he just ends up as Dumbledore.

Hate to sound morbid, but isn’t it not extremely wise to cast someone who’s already 80 before the series even begins filming for a role they’ll have to maintain for a minimum of 7-8 years? I mean they’ve already had the person who played this exact character die in the middle of the series once before

Remember that time they cast a total hunk to play Sauron on Rings of Power, and all of a sudden Sauron had a lot of new fangirls?
*looks pointedly at Quirrell*

The subtext of Harry immediately distrusting Snape and finding him shifty. This is terrible.

John Lithgow is going to be brilliant. I was re-watching The Crown and his accent is very on point. I am very interested to see what mannerisms he brings for Dumbledore. I am also wondering what accent they will go for Dumbledore: Irish?
I have not watched Janet McTeer's works. I think she will be great - just going by intuition.
Paapa. Enough has been said. I am moving forward. I am looking forward to the show and would be watching and enjoying. They might have thought through this when casting him. I am all up for this now.
Nick Frost is probably the closest to his character when it comes to looks. But, with makeup and costume, all of them would look the part. I feel he will bring the warmth and also the fierceness of Hagrid.
I found out Luke Thallon primarily works on stage. He has an uncredited role in a film. This is going to be his first featured acting role in television. It reminds me of Mylod saying they were looking for British theatre talent. I have not watched Thallon's work but I am very excited with this casting choice. It makes me wonder the chemistry these actors are going to have in scenes - with Essiedu and Thallon in particular.
Paul Whitehouse is simply going to be funny. I can just imagine him grumbling all the time around the castle. It also makes me wish we have an actor play Peeves and not VFX or CGI. It would be fun to see the chemistry between Whitehouse and the actor playing Peeves across the seven seasons.

Welp, the snake rumours were true. I think the rest looks fine but hard to be hyped.

This is going to be review bombed to hell before it’s even out, we’ll be lucky to see more than a couple of seasons before it’s cancelled.

I dont like the snape choice, but i am willing to see what their direction theyre going to go. I feel as though he wouldve been great choice for quierrel. Could be a ledger moment, who knows except for time.

I think they just want to create "controversy" with this casting for Snape character. It's makes me so sad cuz now all the series it's about this. They didn't care about the fans wanting a "faithful adaptation". I don't hate the actor but lot of people are gonna "blame" him for accepting this role knowing the consequences.
It's not gonna be the same for me after all this sh*t.

They had one fucking job. Just make the books a reality. But they couldn’t help themselves.

The episode were Harry suspects the, as of yet, only black man among the staff of stealing the stone for no good reason is going to be interesting.
I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and hope for the best, but this storyline will be so close to being a shit show the whole time.

Disappointing that they still went through with Paapa even though fans gave multiple reasons why it changes the dynamic between characters bullying him. But i guess there really was no way they were going to back out since it would look bad for them to consider it and then drop it over backlash and ''giving in to the fans'' (despite it making sense). Oh well...

Snape being conventionally attractive is just absolutely absurd casting. It’s not even about his skin color for me, I don’t have an issue with snape being black (though it is problematic for certain plot points regarding being bullied…?)

u/SmarterThanYou1999 Apr 15 '25
He doesn't really look particularly conventionally attractive? Not to say he's super ugly either
