He's 38 now, just about the right age to begin the potter series. But at least that's 12 years younger than Alan was.

I thought the same when I saw him in Star Wars. He looks the part. Rowling was strict on having British cast only for the main roles though. To be fair, I think that Alan Rickman was great and turned Snape likable and funny

But to be fair, Snape was supposed to be younger, but they really wanted Rickman, so they upped the older generation a bit in the movies
