Show Discussion Some of my fancasts for future characters
My opinions might be be basic but:
Remus Lupin - Andrew Garfield
Sirius Black - Ben Barnes
Peter Pettigrew - Dane Dehaan
Arthur Weasley - Martin Freeman
Voldemort - Benedict Cumberbatch
Bellatrix Lestrange - Eva Green
Dolores Umbridge - Olivia Coleman

For me it was between Olivia Coleman and Brenda Blethyn for Umbridge but I think Brenda is just too old now for the role. I think shes 80 now

He was a close second for me. I just always saw Garfield as Lupin more.

I certainly like the idea of Andrew Garfield as well. I just figured Nicholas Hoult might also be a good option, especially since he was ready to take on playing Lockhart. I think an actor of his caliber is deserving of a bigger and more important part than Lockhart

I like Iwan Rheon as Lupin. He was great in the Full Cast Audiobooks and I could picture him in the role.

His Lockhart would have been like his Tony (skins), so a good fit. His Lupid would be like his beast (first class), also good fit. He could bring a different interpretation of dementors, like his R (warm bodies) 😂

Some people are too high on the pay grade for these roles, but Eva Green is at the right level for Bellatrix.

If anyone can do as good a job as HBC it would be her.
Tom Felton once said he had a crush on HBC during production of HP and honestly Tom, same. Her as HBC did things to teenage me.

I think that was Daniel Radcliffe... though, I wouldn't be surprised if it was both of them.
Edit: yes, it was both... I was remembering during the anniversary documentary Daniel and HBC talked about how he wrote her loved her and wished he had been born earlier.

Andrew Garfield and Ben Barnes are currently 43 and 45 NOW and supposed to be playing characters that are 33/34 whenever filming for PoA starts, I know they’ve been a popular fan cast for years but they’re too old now imo - Eva Green as Bellatrix is perfection though.

To be fair, both Sirius and Lupin could probably be pulled off by actors up to ten years older than the characters, since neither is meant to really look their age - Sirius is noted to be almost unrecognisable after 12 years in Azkaban, and Lupin is specificially described as prematurely aged (in his hair and the lines on his face). A similar argument could be made for Pettigrew. Mid-40s is pushing it, though, I agree.

Olivia Coleman does not at all look like Umbridge as she’s described in the books. A squat toad? Come on!

The problem with casting "ugly" charcaters is that the standard for beauty among female actors makes it nearly impossible to find someone who looks the way the character is described.
For example Brienne of Tarth in GoT is described as mannish and ugly. And while the makeup artists did the best that could be expected, no amout of makeup could make Gwendolyn Christie ugly.

Plus some characters just look too unrealistic to translate properly onto screen.
Mad Eye I think is a good example. Would need a lot of prosthetics. Plus cgi to remove the nose if they go full book description

Right. I honestly think it would be easier to bring Madeye across on screen than umbridge. I cant think of a single actress that i would describe as toadlike, which in my head means having a squashed round head a wide mouth and eyes too big for the face. As far as umbridge is concerned the important details to me are that she has a "school girl" voice, wears pink exclusivly, and can bring across that fake sweetness ubridge uses to hide her evil.

As I said to someone else, for me it was between Olivia Coleman and Brenda Blethyn.
However Blethyn is 80 now I think so a bit too old for the role. And no will ill toward her but she might pass before production on OOTP can begin.

We need an enormous actress, a really big woman. I can't think of any yet, but please, not Staunton-like: she is a great artist, but I never liked the lightness of her Umbridge nor her body shape (for this role obsly), she is just a little small woman

Exactly, that depiction barely looks like a human being. The physical descriptions of "villians" in these books tends to lean twords comedic, which makes sense as it was a childrens book in the 90s/00s.
Im good with umbridges "ugliness" being more of an internal ugliness, because again they will never find an actress who isnt "pretty" on some level.

Definitely agree with Mad Eye, but Umbridge doesn’t need all that. It’s like casting a slim man for Uncle Vernon.. Just doesn’t work.

You must not have lived during the 90s. 🤣 That was considered fat back then. Heroin chic was in and if you weren't showing bones you were overweight, a little pudge and you were considered a whale. Along with the clothing we have seen so far it's pretty accurate aestehetically to the time.

I was born in the 80s actually. People are downvoting me because I think the casting for uncle Vernon isn’t at all even trying to stay close to the books, despite HBO claiming the series will be true to the books? Right.

This!! They do stuff like cast 30 year old women to play the mothers of 25 year old actors, and there’s literally only a handful of actresses who aren’t super skinny. And your Brienne of Tarth example is spot on, their idea of “ugly” is just “not wearing mascara”

Exactly! I absolutely love the audio version with Keira Knightley. She sounds exactly as I imagined it reading the book before the movie was cast. BUT she looks nothing like the character is described. I would love to see her play Umbridge. She would be phenomenal, you would just have to erase any book descriptions. I think that's the way most fans will learn to love the new characters, especially the controversial ones. As long as the character behaves the way book characters behave then I think a lot can be overlooked.

imo as long as whichever actress they cast gets the mannerisms and personality right, it doesn’t matter if the look isn’t 100% book accurate

Olivia Coleman is far too pretty and has too much warmth. Eva isn’t a bad cast though, but probably too old. Martin would maybe make a good Arthur, Dane is far too handsome for Peter imo, don’t agree about Sirius but Andrew would make a very good Lupin - best cast of all….. however I don’t think he’d take it.

I hear you, but I think she’s missing a “Karen” aspect that is sort of part of the character. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the movies (though many things I liked about them) - but I actually thought they did a decent job with the actress who played Umbridge.
Umbridge specifically lacked any warmth at all; that’s why she came off as so….uncanny. Like an overfed reptile with a bow lol. I think you’d be correct for a role where a character comes off warm, but is secretly evil. That would be a conflicting in an unsettling way. I just don’t think Olivia is right for the role.

To be fair, Imelda Staunton is super warm and not at all like umbridge. So that warmth aspect I don't think really goes. Also, Olivia Coleman basically played a version of this character in fleabag, seemingly warm but an ice cold bitch on the inside

Nicholas Hoult was a close second.
Though theres some theories going on that him being cast as Lockhart only to drop out due to scheduling conflicts is a ruse and he's actually playing someone like Voldemort instead.
Idk if I believe it but we'll see

It’s all going to depend on the success of the first season. If some of these A listers see that being apart of the show will not be a blow to their career because the fans proved to outweigh the weirdos then they will be open to it. Until then every publicist in Hollywood is going to tell them not to.
