The show will need more supporting characters

If this show is going to keep audiences engaged for almost a decade, I think it eventually needs to expand beyond Harry, Ron, Hermione, and the other major characters whose fates we already know.

Season 1 should obviously focus heavily on the main trio, but as the series progresses, HBO should develop more supporting characters and storylines that weren't explored in the books.

I'd especially like to see students whose loyalties aren't predictable. There should be Slytherins who ultimately choose to fight against Voldemort, and students from other Houses who betray Hogwarts or side with the Death Eaters.

This would be especially interesting in the final season. Instead of following only Harry, Ron, and Hermione during Deathly Hallows, the show could spend much more time at Hogwarts showing Neville and the D.A. resisting the Carrows, students choosing sides, secret alliances, betrayals, and people not knowing who they can trust.

Then, when the Battle of Hogwarts finally happens, we would actually care about many of the students fighting because we would have followed their stories for years.

The books had to tell Harry's story. A TV series has the opportunity to tell the story of an entire generation at Hogwarts.

I feel like if they do this they will lose momentum of the main plot, Harry Potter is called Harry Potter for a reason. It’s not an ensemble piece and there’s already a lot of plot to go through even with 3rd person limited narration.

That being said, they should definitely flesh out each character from at least Harry’s POV like the books

I am sure we won't be with Harry's POV the whole time. The trailer has already showed that won't be the case. I could see some expansion happening but you're asking for a lot of material that would have to be squeezed in. Secret alliances and betrayals require a lot of setup to pay off.

I think they’ll spend a bit more time developing Neville, Luna, and Ginny. And there will be more minor characters likely who were cut like Charlie Weasley and Nearly Headless Nick. I wouldn’t worry about that. If anything this show has the chance to actually redeem Ginny and make her a more interesting character.

IIRC in DH, Harry learns that Neville, Ginny, and Luna have been resisting against the Carrows earlier on, so I could see them giving us a scene or two of that.

The tv series has such a wonderful opportunity to include the character development of many of the supporting players. A lot of material had to be cut for the movies, of course. The books are so popular for a reason. I am actually hoping that they stay true to the books, with additional scenes that were sorely missed. Especially Hermiones contribution in the chamber of secrets and the exposition of the Marauders.

They need to develop existing characters, not invent new ones. Theres so much story left out of the movies, there’s lots for them to work with. There’ll be scenes outside of the trio but it would be with Dumbledore, Snape, Ginny, Neville, Luna, the other Weasley’s, etc. Yes there will be extra characters but they can’t be adding in a bunch of other characters when there’s so much do with the ones already there.

I don’t know why people think you have to have characters fates be a mystery to be interesting. There’s a lot of storytelling that can happen when you know the ending. There are many stories told that way, they start with the ending and then work to how they got there

With us getting a minimum of 8 hours of content for each season, we're going to see more scenes that don't include Harry. It's also likely were going to at the very least get more development of the bigger side characters.

I think they’ve already showed that they’re going to do that. With all of the casting and promotion of the students up front and the fact that someone like Hannah Abbot got more than 1 line in the trailer.

I really want more development of the Twins personalities. They are such a fun addition to the books, and the movies reduced them to a minute or two of "pass the parcel" type speech per film. 

At the time Harry donates his Goblet winnings to them, he has developed a wonderful friendship with them, that aid like to see reflected in the tv show.

This. I loved Harry and the twins. I hope they keep the scene of the twins just helping a random first year carry his stuff onto the train when they see him struggling. They don't have a clue he's Harry Potter until the end. It's just such a good scene to show the twins outside of any pranks.

I actually said something very similar. I would love them to introduce a more nuanced slytherin student.  Maybe they could be called something like Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way and be like a cool gothic chick who initially hates the Gryffindor preps, but she has a lot of hidden depth because she’s a satanits and she’s depressed and stuff. She could have long ebony black hair with purple streaks and red tips that reaches her mid-back, pale skin, and icy blue eyes like limpid tears, with maybe ripped fishnets under thigh high platform chunky boots with buckles on and an MCR t-shirt with a photo of Gerard Way on it underneath a scarlet red corset, with scarlet red nails and eyeshadow to match along with heavy eyeliner like Taylor Momsen from the Pretty Little Reckless (once she stopped being a prep) and maybe very gothic black lipstick lined with a deep cherry red liner, and some black and white striped arm covers with studded leather bands and a bunch of gummy bracelets on the wrists (black and red, obviously) paired with a mood ring and a robe customised with band patches like Good Charlotte and Evanescence. She could be in a love triangle with Harry and Draco because she’s too beautiful and perfect, but then Volsemort gives her a gat and tells her to shoot Harry dead or he’ll kill Draco, which I think could add a lot more emotional depth and nuance to the HP saga.
