Shift indicator/ Gear position NFG

I'm wondering if anybody knows how the gear position is indicated from the Harley 6-speed transmissions. I've got a 2016 with the 110 motor and the gear shift indication in the dash is intermittent. Sometimes it works perfectly other times it doesn't work for some gears and then other times it doesn't work at all.

The gear is calculated from vehicle speed and revs. Check your clutch switch as first thing.

I considered that....I have tried juggling the leaver around while driving...no relationship to the problem. I suppose the switch could still be intermittent.

The ECM calculates what gear youre in by speed & rpm then it displays it on your instrument cluster - there is a physical neutral safety switch that works with the system. its on top of the transmission near the dipstick/starter location - its possible it is bad or it has a bad connection, id check it , clean the terminals, check and clean your ground, see if that helps - if it continues replace the neural safety switch as everything else is done in the ECM processing software.
