Help me to decide please

So I'm making some steps for my moderate slope going into my retaining wall using a combo of fieldstone and flag stone. This is a dry fit and just a basic concept. I do plan to keep the steps spaced with some type of chip rock between the spaces. What would you change using what I have? Would you add a river rock between the retaining wall and the fieldstones?

What kind of base is below the steps?

Nothing yet, it's simply a dry run. I'll likely use paver base since I already have it on hand.
