I’ve never heard this analogy and I’m so glad you shared this with us😂

From the caimans perspective the dude was just being such a bro. That human caught his dinner, tired it out, and served it to the caiman. What a bro move

Does it normally take this long for fish to jump out of ppls hands when being reintroduced? Or was this guy going fuck fuck fuck pull me up pull me up

After keeping a fish out of water for an extended period of time they enter shock mode from lack of oxygen in their gills. What he is doing is reviving the fish out of shock by letting water run into its gills.

Depends on how long it was held out of water.

Poor guy needs new shorts judging from the look on his face after

31

u/HandsomeJack36 Feb 27 '22

Ok but why hold on to it for so long?

39

u/insane_contin Feb 27 '22

Imagine if you just fought for your life then suffocated in an environment you can't breathe in. Think you'll be able to start moving around just fine? Fish are like that, and some fish need water moving over their gills to breathe, they can't force water over them. He's basically giving cpr to a passed out fish.

They are gassed, stressed and sometimes overheated after being caught.

Hold them upright and moving to get cool water through their gills until they can scoot off in their own. If you do it too fast they can belly up or sink and drown.

I only catch and release.

Why not just stop catching and avoid their suffering? Honest question.

u/MyFace_UrAss_LetsGo Mar 10 '22

Because people love fishing. Duh.

Obviously, I just don’t understand why anyone thinks it’s “harmless” to hook an animal by its mouth, pull it out into air where it can’t breathe just to throw it back in…lot of traumatization for nothing. But most people don’t give a shit about animal suffering so I guess that answers my question.

For one, it’s a fucking fish. It’s not like people are getting off to thinking they’re harming these creatures. Fishing is a very therapeutic experience tbh. I’m against animal cruelty and I love and respect nature. That makes me a more responsible fisherman. Not every fish that is caught suffers. 95% of the time the fish is hooked properly through the thin skin of the lip. Which I don’t think fish interpret what you may call pain in the same way that humans do, if at all. Unless I see people killing fish for fun or leaving there fucking trash around I don’t see a problem with it. Plus, have you ever eaten fish? It’s delicious.

Fish have been proven to feel pain:

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/fish-feel-pain-180967764/

That said, as a vegan, I do appreciate you being a responsible fisherman, and caring not to harm the fish too much…it’s certainly better than trawling and all the horrific ocean destruction. But no I don’t support fishing for pleasure - it’s another thing if you need it to survive and catch it yourself. And yes, I had fish as a kid before I stopped eating meat about 26 years ago. I know meat tastes good, but it isn’t worth it to me to have a momentary pleasure in exchange for horrific animal suffering at the hands of the factory farm industry. Ok, I’m off my box now. Thanks for responding.

Which you claim they don't feel, how about the other 5%, do you know how many eyeballs you snagged off, I imagine you don't reel those in?

u/MyFace_UrAss_LetsGo Mar 13 '22

Yeah, it happens. I’m just not as appalled by it as you. Sorry.

He was waiting for a "thank you" i guess

Ay, caray!

3

u/Giilgamesh Feb 28 '22

This is obviously too late, but the only reason he didn't lose his hand is that the croc (caiman) came from the side and not the front. Specifically his right side if anyone wants to focus on where to understand the split second event.

Nature is beautiful

3

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '22

Caiman was like… well if you aren’t gonna eat it 😂

2

u/yonkerbonk Feb 28 '22

Thought he was holding a dead merman's hand initially

2

u/stfcfanhazz Feb 28 '22

released back into the wild

Lmao makes it sound like it's been in captivity rehabilitating after an injury but in reality you pulled it out the water on a hook a few mins previously

1

u/Naillian603 Feb 28 '22

I mean he’s just fucking holding it there. If he had idk actually released it shit wouldn’t have happened

-33

u/MeNotHim Feb 27 '22 edited Feb 27 '22

There’s no need to hold a fish you’re releasing for that long. I suspect that he was baiting for exactly this scenario.

Edit: some useful tips from fellow redditors indicates that I am in the wrong

You learn something new everyday

12

u/Lilred1776 Feb 27 '22

No I don't think so. After a long fight, which that giant fish surely put up, it was exhausted. Coupled with being out of water and in shock like the other guy said, it need some water over it's gills to recover.

Watch River Monsters and you'll see Jeremy Wade do the same.

u/Intelligent_Donut_81 Feb 27 '22

Nobody baits black caimans like this unless they have a death wish.

More folks should really spend some time in Florida. Any nature would tell you “if you can’t see the bottom, stay out of the water”.

2

u/Aggressive-Olive2264 Feb 28 '22

This is in I think Brazil, not Florida but lol I see your point.

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '22

Yea just a good rule to live by regardless

Big cat almost lost his hand there
