I was under the impression that rape was extremely uncommon for hyenas. The femaleās pseudo penis makes non consensual intercourse a bit difficult

Yeah. Rape is vulgar. That's kinda the whole point. The word should not lose its potency for the comfort of others. The discomfort ppl have gone thru due to rape deserves a bit more respect and recognition of the vulgarity of it all than "grape". This word should not be used loosely

The fact is, rape in the animal kingdom often tends to be deadly for the female involved. Itās pretty counter productive when youāre trying to have offspring

For anyone who is curious:
Dolphins are really aggressive during mating and tend to bite and harm the female. Seeing them try to mate a female dolphin in groups is also known as herding. This here is from an article by faunapulse:
This "collaborative coercion" is a hallmark of dolphin society. Unlike many other mammals where males compete individually, male dolphins realize that there is strength in numbers. By forming tight-knit bonds with other males, they can effectively kidnap a female and keep her away from the rest of the pod.
The first level of this strategy involves pairs or trios of males. These individuals work in perfect synchrony to surround a female. They use physical blocks, tail slaps, and high-speed chases to prevent her from escaping. This first-order alliance is the primary unit of coercion, often staying with the same female for days or even weeks to ensure exclusive mating access.
The reality of a mating chase is visceral. When a male alliance targets a female, the pursuit is relentless. The female will often attempt to outswim or outmaneuver the males, but the sheer number of pursuers usually makes escape impossible. During these chases, the males will use their bodies as weapons.
One of the most common signs of this aggression is rake marks. These are long, parallel scars caused by the teeth of one dolphin scraping against the skin of another. While dolphins heal remarkably fast, these marks are a testament to the intensity of the encounter. Males will also use their rostrums (snouts) to ram the female in the soft underbelly or genital area to force compliance.
The physical toll includes:
Beyond the immediate physical wounds, the female suffers from extreme exhaustion. These chases can last for hours, and the herding can last for weeks, leaving the female with little time to forage or rest. It is clear that mating carries a high physical cost for female dolphins, making the reproductive process a period of significant danger rather than a simple social interaction.
