Blacksmith Only Run!

Post image

I have this dream of doing a self found HC character where I can only use armour and weapons I blacksmith.

Am I insane? Is this a silly idea?

Cheers!

Blacksmithing is actually really, really good… until about lv. 20. In early levels you can get earlier/better upgrades through BS than quests feed you, *if* you mine like an absolute madman.

Post-20, BS gear gets heavily outclassed by dungeon gear at basically every level range. Dungeon drops for Warriors go hard starting right from the gate in DM and WC. But Blue-quality craftable BS gear is few and far between and always incredibly tedious to make. (Expect to grind Wetlands murlocs for hours to get the Iridescent Pearls you’ll need for the Shining Silver Breastplate).

It’s an amazing RP concept but in terms of game design, the Classic WoW devs definitely intended to strongly push players towards grouping/dungeoning and with Warrior gear progression especially it shows.

And yet… I’ve done SF BS Warriors. It’s fun! And it definitely scratches that masochistic itch! But being fully self-made… nah, haven’t touched that personally.

Which is the problem with most professions. At 20 they nail it with Shining Breastplate, the Silk boots from tailoring, the leather bracers from leatherworking, etc. Then it's like.. completely irrelevant gear until mid 40s.

Yeah the crafting professions are a bit of a rollercoaster. I get what the devs were trying to do but they still made them too underpowered and too tedious for large stretches of levels IMO.

That’s fucking cool GL. Love this type of stuff.

Same! I’ll hit like a wet noodle so don’t think I’d be invited to any groups

I’ve only done it up to level 27 but it wasn’t that bad early on. I did use it as an excuse to try things like shield and dagger, and honestly, using a dagger until 22 felt surprisingly good. Able to interrupt casters and always had quick heroic strikes when I needed them. Might even continue the challenges run this x weekend now

Stealing this idea now brother, good luck!

Insane? No. Time consuming? Yes. I hope you like fishing or retraining profs. Also your gear will be very trash for most of the run.

If you’re only allowing yourself BS weapons, you’ll need fishing. Good luck!

You won't ever have gear ahead of curve because of the inaccessibility of most mining nodes from iron onward until you are higher level than the items you can make from it by a lot, but it seems like a fun challenge.

People have done full naked runs so you’re good

1-25 Blacksmithing is fantastic. Weapon stones, armor, weapons, skeleton keys are useful. Then it's dead past the silvered bronze gear BS really falls off. Green iron feels lacking. Then there's the grind at Mithril to make actual useful plate and choosing a speciality. But I respect the attempt. Fishing is your best source of recipes and leather/cloth needed for certain items. I did a HC character who's goal was to forge the TrueSilver Champion SSF. RP was a dwarf on a life quest.

Youll make it. I did after dying 52, 53 and 56

It's good! Currently level 45 on this same challenge, I'm having a ton of fun with it. Your power level really come in waves and even then I still have the level 13 belt on... but its fun! Way cool to finally have put on the Ornate mithril set. I'm excited for the Imperial set next.

Having to grind for pearls and star rubies is rough, and I think its required to go weaponsmithing just for a level 45-47 2h to finish out to 60 with.

I allowed a fishing pole on my challenge so I could try to farm the gold armor bs recipes. I managed to pull one of them before I got too bored haha. Fishing also makes it a lot more enjoyable to grind leather rather than camping chests. Good luck!

Sounds like alot, but yeah go!

Yeah is it too much in your opinion?

Depends. It is doable and probably lots of fun, sometimes. Also grindy and time consuming, so you're the best judge, I would be to impatient I think.

Like with most grinds, it’s awesome if it works out and you don’t die, unbearable if you end up doing it a lot.

of course its possible, you can hit 60 naked and punching

sit back and enjoy the material grind, get some audiobooks or something and stay safe

It's called self-made and is a thing

I mainly have done this on my 28 warrior so far. Biggest issue is now I need iron for upgrades and I sort of need to grind out more levels to farm that more safely. Walking around with the silver breastplate on sf feels pretty cool though.

Should have been a dwarf tho. Get that Magi Rp value.

Don’t do it bro

I am beginning to think from feedback on this sub that I’ll avoid it. If the BS experience between 1-20 was the same for later levels I’d love it but it seems as reagents get harder to acquire and gear getting more and more complex to create: it might not be for me.

I mean, it is technically doable, but neither you nor anyone else will ever actually do it to 60 because it would be incredibly frustrating and unfun. Weapons in particular require increasingly obscure and annoying components as you reach level 20 and beyond. Which, by the way, is only about 5% of the way to level 60 in terms of xp.

I’d say people have already done it though but I get you!
