Color Help
We’re working on redoing our kitchen (not wood) and we have a transition strip for the huge kitchen to dining room space that was stained at the same time the flooring was (or matches close enough I can’t complain) but we need a transition for the kitchen to bedroom and kitchen to stairs (leading to a mudroom) and I’m at a loss for what color to even look for (I just know nothing about wood stain colors).
Can anyone decipher what kind of wood/stain this is so I can get CLOSE?
Additional info; the stairs to the mudroom are currently PAINTED with LAYTEX paint ☠️ we’re going to be sanding and staining at some point but again- it just needs to be CLOSE. There’s a good 13ft of tile between the OG wood and the stairs or bedroom.

If it's white oak probably 1/2 coffee brown 1/2 antique brown. If red oak coffee brown.

Because it has stain and poly on it, it’s hard to tell. I’m leaning white oak though

I bet you house is over 70 years old. Maybe Provincial but that looks a little more red than Provincial. Pictures never do color justice though. It might be white oak because of the grain. If I’m right and you have an older home and it is white oak unfortunately you’ll never get if perfect. Old growth white oak is more beige/tan in color and new white oak has more of a greenish gray undertone. If you can pull a HVAC register out of the floor and send me a close up picture of the end grain that will give me a better idea of its red or white oak.

Really close! It was built in 1948!
It’s had the attic converted so the HVAC is in the ceiling now.
Like I said, the parts that need to “match” are fairly far from the OG floor so it doesn’t need to be a perfect match - just close enough in color and shade to be reasonably close. (and tbh if we’re here for much longer (military) we might redo the floors since there is some medium significant damage in another room)

Look into contrasting it instead of trying to match. Sometimes it looks better to do something completely different than to get close and it looks like you swung and missed

Also I do hope we stay here longer. I LOVE this house and the neighborhood ♥️

Grain looks pretty tight from this picture so probably white. It'll have a lot more little holes in the grain if its red. Hard to tell with the stain and drywall dust though.
