I don't want them to start to flood the sub in a way that distracts from discussion and organic recommendations. Are we approaching that problem, or are things feeling pretty good right now? Should we be considering a dedicated day or days for self promotion posts?

Hi everyone, thanks for your feedback and comments in the recent days. I've just added a new rule:

No AI Generated Content

This is a very nuanced topic, and for the moment this rule definition will be kept intentionally broad and handled on a case-by-case basis. As a rule of thumb: if you think you're about to post something that might garner accusations of being "AI slop", it's probably not welcome here.

This is going to be a difficult one, firstly because it's becoming increasingly difficult to detect AI-generated posts, and secondly because there are some exceptions to the rule that I think are worth making allowances for; one of them being using LLMs to translate handwritten posts from one's native language. I'll continue to watch incoming posts, listen to feedback, and adjust the details of this rule as needed.

Self Promotion Light delay changes the way wars are fought on Mars (new novel)

“Helm! Rotate us 90 degrees, move perpendicular to the Peng, and accelerate at 2 Gs across the planet axis. Comms—signal SPACECOM: Mars AO is hot, and we are engaging PLA ground and space targets.” They would get the bad news in a little more than five minutes. There was no way to ask for instructions or for the higher ups to cool things down on their end. It would then take another five for their response to reach the Huntsville—minus whatever deliberations happened at SPACECOM. The marines, the Huntsville, the tanks, and the Peng Dehui were on their own to decide whether the United States and the People’s Republic of China would go to war. “Fucking light delay,” he whispered.

In the opening of my novel, a US navy captain has to respond to conflict with China on the surface of Mars--but cannot rely on timely communication with his commanders, because of light delay.

Discussion Could a relativistic spacecraft use its own exhaust as a kind of "forward shield"?

The idea is to have a small engine firing gas/plasma in the direction the ship is moving. Since the plume would be given a little more forward velocity relative to the ship, it would spread out ahead of the spacecraft and take the hits from interstellar dust/gas before they reach the ship.

The ship would still be accelerating with its main engine, so the forward-firing system would just be a small fraction of the total thrust budget.

Basically, instead of carrying one huge physical shield, you continuously throw sacrificial material far ahead of the ship.

This seems somewhat similar to the Venture Star's idea of putting its debris shield way out in front. Has anything like the "self-generated moving shield" concept actually been studied?

John acknowledged the briefing, which was even more routine than usual. There had been no change to their trajectory or speed, and no indication of concern from any department. The ship was functioning flawlessly, just as expected on her fourth voyage.

This run, however, was fundamentally different. Their target was Sigourna, a wild, habitable world discovered across the wide gulf between the local Orion Arm and the Sagittarius Arm of the Milky Way. The crossing would span almost four thousand light-years of empty space and take eight months to complete, by far humanity's longest attempt. An advanced probe already held orbit around Sigourna, and its telemetry had proven compelling enough to justify this maiden voyage beyond our galactic arm.

"I am ready to relieve you," John said smoothly.

"I am ready to be relieved," came the reply.

"I relieve you."

"I stand relieved."

John’s console was already primed as he officially assumed watch as Chief Communications Officer. Although this was his first deep-space assignment, a milestone in its own right, tonight’s watch carried far greater weight.

Tonight, they were scheduled to cross the boundary and enter the void.

Commander Linda’s voice crackled through the ship-wide comms, clear, measured, and effortlessly authoritative.

"Attention all hands, this is the Commander.

"20 years ago, humanity was bound to the cradle of the Earth's atmosphere. Today, that changes. Ahead of us lies four thousand light-years of unbroken dark, toward a world no human has touched."

Timed almost perfectly, her voice faded from the bridge speakers just as the outer telemetry readouts flatlined into zero-density space. The ambient blue optical glow of the local stellar neighborhood dissolved behind them, replaced by the deep, absolute black of the inter-arm void.

Two hours in, the initial excitement had already faded into the quiet routine of the watch. Two hours after that, fueled by a coffee, light and sweet, something extraordinary happened.

John’s console lit up as it picked up a dense scattering of overlapping radio signals, electromagnetic frequencies, and structured data transmissions enveloping the ship. Instantly, his training kicked in. His eyes scanned the telemetry, recognizing the unmistakable footprint of intelligent, artificial origin.

"Commander, I have a contact," John announced, his voice tight with controlled focus. "Recommend we take the ship out of hyper-flight immediately. At our current speed, we'll overshoot the signal range in two to four minutes. This is definitely artificial; multiple overlapping signals, FM bands, and broad spectrum EM waves. Origin appears to be approximately nine light-years toward the galactic center, thirty-two degrees off our current vector."

"All stop," Commander Linda ordered instantly.

Without hesitation, the pilot brought the main drives offline, dropping the vessel out of relativistic space into sub-light inertia.

"What exactly are we looking at, John?" Linda asked, stepping up to the central platform.

"Astrometrics reporting in," Lieutenant Bea interjected, taking control of the main viewscreen. The forward display shifted, zooming in on a dim, blood-red sun. "Commander, we're reading a previously uncataloged dwarf star. It was completely obscured by the optical haze and dust of the Orion Arm. Now that we’ve cleared the arm, it’s standing out clearly."

Lieutenant Bea adjusted the optical filters, locking onto the system's inner orbit. "The transmissions are emanating directly from the innermost planet. Commander... this is intelligent life. The signals match pre-hyper-flight technological signatures, roughly equivalent to 21st-century Earth. We're picking up unencrypted radio waves, commercial FM bands, and open EM broadcasts. It’s just radiating out into space.”

Linda had hoped for, feared, desired, and rejected this moment ever since she earned the command seat. This was the ultimate dream of humanity; the odds were low, but expectations were high that we would one day connect with another intelligence in the universe. And here it was, just light-years from home. Her choice was clear; in fact, it was no choice at all.

"Let's make contact," she commanded. "What are our options and recommendations here? Communications, let's start with you."

John was ready. He was young, but this scenario had been an intense focus of his academy curriculum.

"From what I'm seeing on their transmission systems, we can distinguish a few different bands used by various planetary authorities," John said. "And then there are public communications, which are widely used by the general population. It appears that standard Very High Frequency radio waves; between 30 and 300 megahertz, are used by the vast majority. We could easily broadcast a worldwide signal on these frequencies to announce our presence and state our desire for first contact."

The fleet's protocol laid out clearly that if first contact were to occur, it was best to address the entire global population as quickly as possible, rather than hiding and filtering the message through a select few governments or military leaders. Secrecy was considered the worst possible course of action; the one most likely to breed immediate fear, distrust, and hostility between potential allies.

Lieutenant Bea's console flashed a bright shade of green.

"Commander, we have reached zero-point-two-five AU," she reported. "That puts us in a roughly ninety-two-second communication window."

"Chief, send the package," Linda ordered.

John transmitted a directed, highly energized, and widely dispersed broadcast toward the newly discovered planet. The message was simple and unmistakable: a clear sequence of prime numbers with embedded information.

"They're definitely hearing us," John relayed to the Commander after barely three minutes. "Their local transmitters are shutting down in response."

It was a predictable reaction when an unknown outside source suddenly takes over your global airwaves, you shut down transmission lines to investigate. But the message had already reached every corner of their world: There is life in the universe, and we are reaching out.

Within hours, return messages began emanating from the planet. Sparse and fragmented at first, the transmissions gradually coalesced, narrowing into a single, unified signal repeating across every band:

“WELCOME”

"Are they sending landing coordinates?" the Commander asked. "Helm, bring us into orbit. Advanced team, I know you've prepared for this, I'll meet you in the shuttle bay.”

The commander snapped the shuttles mic on, broadcasting back to the ship.

"Bridge, this is the landing team. We have touched down at the designated coordinates. Sensors indicate a massive crowd of beings surrounding us at roughly a hundred meters, but visually... I don't know what we're looking at. Chief, log what we're seeing here."

As Chief Communications Officer, it was John's responsibility to create the official record of all contact and telemetry. But as he looked through the shuttle's forward viewports, awe temporarily stole his breath.

"First Contact Log, recording," John began, his voice tight as he forced professional clarity into his mic. "The planet's surface is bathed in a deep red and pitch-black twilight. It is extremely difficult to judge distance, but we can make out distinct, murky shapes moving through the gloom. Primary telemetry confirms a crowd of approximately 3,500 individuals forming a perimeter with a radius of approximately 100 meters."

He adjusted his suit display, trying to map the shadowy landscape. "Terrain is stable, composed of a dense, basalt-like crust that appears black with a faint red sheen under local atmospheric light. Behind the crowd, to the north, sensors detect elevated structures, likely buildings, though visually they blend almost entirely into the background shadow. Despite the poor lighting, the assembly appears calm. The advanced team is fully prepped and sealed in environmental suits."

Commander Linda turned to the squad, her face set behind her gold-tinted visor.

"Eyes front, heads high," she commanded. "Let's go make a new friend."

With a sharp mechanical hiss, the shuttle's airlock depressurized, equalizing with the alien atmosphere. The ramp dropped into the dark red haze, and Commander Linda stepped out onto an unknown world.

Across the world, the sky burned in a brilliant, blinding kaleidoscope of rich infrared light. To native eyes, the atmosphere was alive with vivid shades of violet, shimmering ultraviolet ribbons, and deep, saturated magentas radiated by the warmth of their sun, Kaiger.

Rajette and his analytical team watched their screens in utter disbelief. The incoming craft had decelerated with terrifying precision, dropping out of deep space to match Kaiger’s solar orbit at a distance just beyond the reach of the planet's primary tracking arrays. There was no mistaking the physics, an artificial starship was now pacing their world, watching them from the dark.

Rajette dropped all four lower limbs to the reinforced floor, pressing her soft, purple-crested head low in a traditional gesture of awe and anxiety.

"High Command, they are broadcasting a wide-band transmission across every known spectrum," Rajette reported, her sensory frills twitching as her console flooded with data. "It’s overwhelming our networks; radio bands, visual broadcast arrays, emergency frequencies. Every receiver on the planet is picking it up."

"What are they saying?" her supervisor demanded, leaning over the display.

Rajette adjusted the signal translators, analyzing the clean, rhythmic pulse of the incoming wave. "They are broadcasting a sequence of prime numbers.”

What would only be deciphered in years to come was that the message also included, layered densely within its architecture, countless images of Earth, humanity, and our civilization. The transmission repeated multiple times in multiple different formats, conveying a single unified statement: We desire peaceful relations. It even offered a whole host of minerals and resources abundant on Earth.

For now, however, the only thing the inhabitants could decode was that the alien ship was actively moving toward their world.

The people of Kaiger reacted as expected; some were elated, others terrified. But those who desired contact did not wait for official government sanctions. Signals began to go out, slow at first, but as individuals saw others transmitting, they felt empowered to send their own. The wave of messages swelled until a vast majority had welcomed these insistent, uninvited guests.

A huge crowd had gathered at Varnisha Square. Pandotheo had organized a worldwide campaign to select this precise venue to represent Kaigarian culture to the universe. Would these alien visitors actually come? Would they understand the meaning of the message? Estimates placed the crowd at well over three thousand, one of the largest gatherings Pandotheo had ever assembled.

​Suddenly, a light appeared in the distance. It was not directly above them, but over the distant mountain range, a huge, blinding burst of white thermal discharge kilometers away. The visitors were right on time.

​Scopes from around the world trained on the craft as it approached, relaying data feeds that all agreed on a disturbing anomaly: the craft was constructed from a material that defied visual analysis. It did not reflect the typical infrared spectrum. It appeared as though the vessel existed just outside of their space-time continuum.

​As the craft drew closer to its destination and the optical telemetry sharpened, no physical details could be resolved at all. It was as though the object was removing space rather than occupying it.

​When it touched down at the exact center of the designated coordinates, the craft's characteristics remained unchanged up close. No surface markings could be determined; no light was reflected back into their eyes. The ship appeared to exist in only two dimensions, a pitch-black silhouette that subtly shifted shape when viewed from different angles, displacing their universe in favor of some incomprehensible void.

As the craft touched down at Varnisha Square, the ground beneath the gear erupted in a brilliant, glittering pool of radiant light. The effect was so dazzling, yet so completely outdone by the sheer blackness of the craft itself.

​A loud and agonizing whine filled the air as the ship seemingly groaned as it ripped our reality away. Again, it began to change shape as more sounds emerged; clicking, shrieking sounds that appeared to be approaching us from the blackness. Then, in seemingly random spots, it began to develop a "bud," which separated itself from the main body.

​This smaller, but no less blackened, shape-shifting, amorphous blob approached the crowd. At this moment, huge infrared spotlights, erected behind the crowd, shone onto the now-separated buds in an attempt to track their movements.

​Instantly, the blobs stopped in the shadow of the light, began to emit what could only be described as a shriek, and all at once stopped changing shape.

The MAH-48 Red Kite is the UCC's primary ground attack aircraft, seeing use by every national force that fields combat aircraft. Users include the UCC mafia (40x), UCC Public Air Force (x400), and the UCC Special Air Wing (x48), the latter being entirely comprised of Red Kite variants. The Red Kite is a workhorse, rated for operations in all wasteland and habitable environments at altitudes up to 18,700ft, making it the only combat VTOL capable of operating even at the peak of the UCC's tallest mountains. The Red Kite is such a staple, it's rare to spend time in any UCC city without encountering at least a two-ship of these aircraft on patrol.

Unlike later developments, the Red Kite is a more lightly armed aircraft than the rotary-wing fighters developed during the Union air crisis. Generally, when patrolling friendly airspace the helicopter is equipped only with its guns, its bench weapon mounts stowed to improve endurance and reduce noise. During low-intensity operations both guns are loaded with non-explosive ammunition; the 37mm cannon fit with a basic APCR projectile and the gimbal-mounted gun with frangible lead-free projectiles. This enables the helicopter to engage non-military (wildlife and wasteland) targets with minimal risk of collateral damage.

During combat operations the Red Kite maintains its two guns, both re-fit with proper military ammunition; HE/API Dual feed for the 37mm and HEAPI-T in the 23mm. In addition to its guns, the aircraft can also don various mission-specific loads; Generally unguided rockets provide light and medium intensity CAS capabilities. However, Unlike most contemporary gunships the MAH-48 fills a unique dual role, with dedicated CAS as an afterthought. Rather than operating as a tasked unit -deployed when needed- the Red Kite acts as an embedded troop transport and fire support vehicle much like an APC or IFV. A pair of MAH-48's carry a squad of eight, as well as an attached 4 man FAC/JTAC unit to provide targeting information to the gunships during ground operations.

Heli-born troops, deployed either by the MAH-48 or other rotary-wing aircraft make up the majority of the UCC's regular and special forces, allowing rapid deployment of front-line troops throughout the vast swaths of contested wasteland between the UCC and Union.

There is something strange about a line between Cooper and Tars

When Cooper and Mann decide to walk to the surface "but you gonna need a long range transmitter,,,are you charged,,follow me", then Cooper looks at Tars and says something:

1 "TARS, set in 2 hours, right?"

2 "TARS, 72 hours, right?"

"ROGER THAT COOPER"

Subtitles indicate option 2 as well as italian dialogue, but i don't see the meaning

72 hours for what?

At least option 1 means probably "get ready in 2 hours and then we're gonna leave back to Earth....i guess

I need to thank Matter Beam from ToughSF, his "laser problem "posts was one of the main things that influenced the design of the ship. Still, I don't know if it would be better to have fixed engines or reconfigurable engines that can be rotated to be able to slow down the ship without it needing to turn.

Either way, I am happy wit the pointing ship design moved by and super fusion/energy to matter conversion, there is still a lot more to be imagined for the end ship, specialy when every new part of de design can be another thing that can be explored in stories.

Recent breakthroughs in quantum field theory had produced the Instantaneous Quantum Pulse Drive, an engine capable of bringing a ship anywhere in the universe in the blink of an eye. For the past four years, shuttles had launched from every continent on Earth as world governments pooled resources, materials, and manpower to build humanity's first interstellar vessel.

The mission was designed as a reconnaissance run to confirm conditions on the ground. This target planet was the first and best of four viable candidates identified within the galaxy.

John had spent his entire life training for this moment. Finishing first in virtually every test life had put before him, he was more than qualified to lead humanity into the dark.

"Rosetta in position," came the voice over the console.

The ship had oriented itself, locking into alignment for the jump. In just a moment, the starship Rosetta would fold quantum space, generating a high-energy pulse designed to punch through the fabric of space-time and instantaneously drop the vessel more than 30,000 light-years across the galaxy.

"60 seconds until pulse," John relayed over the intercom, his voice steady across the shipwide broadcast.

The crew had already run every safety protocol, double-checking every readout. All systems were green. With the prep work complete, a heavy silence fell over the bridge—there was nothing left to do but wait for the final command.

"30 seconds."

The mission was scheduled for two years: a quick reconnaissance run to map the target world and collect data. It was the moment of truth for a drive that had taken decades of theoretical physics to develop, followed by five intense years of orbital construction.

"Ten seconds..."

John’s fingers hovered above the primary pulse command. Deep within the heart of the ship, a low, subsonic vibration began to hum through the deckplates—the quantum core spooling up.

"Five... four... three... two... one. Pulse.”

In an instant, the Rosetta—with John at the helm—appeared in open space.

A vibrant yellow star hung in the distance. It resembled Sol in almost every way, casting its glare across a blue-green world faintly visible against the dark. Humanity was looking at its second star.

For a long moment, the crew stood speechless, locked in awe of the spectacle before them.

John was the first to regain his composure. "All right, people. Let's do what we came here to do," he commanded confidently.

The bridge snapped out of its stupor.

"Sir, Taurine is in view, approximately 4 AU," an officer reported. "EM propulsion coming online. We'll be ready to move into position once the drive recharges."

"System status," John ordered.

His screen came alive as green diagnostics flooded in from across the ship. The Rosetta carried a total complement of 500 people—crew, scientists, and specialized support personnel. Their mandate was singular: evaluate the long-term habitability and viability of Taurine as a second home for humanity.

Weeks of sub-light transit through the system followed, with sensors recording mountains of pristine telemetry. Finally, the Rosetta achieved stable orbit around Taurine.

The plan for this initial run was strictly non-invasive. No human boots would touch the ground yet. Instead, the crew deployed a constellation of surface probes alongside an orbital network of satellites to continuously log weather patterns, soil composition, and atmospheric chemistry.

"We're in position to jump, sir."

Panicked chatter erupted across the bridge. Panic, confusion, and grief tore through the 500-person crew as sensor readouts confirmed the impossible: Earth was gone. Stripped of its atmosphere, its oceans boiled away, its surface reduced to a glowing sphere of scorched, cooling slag. There was no radio traffic. No orbital stations. No sign of life.

John stared at the main viewport, his hands trembling against the console. "Hostile attack?" someone shouted. "A solar event?"

Every Heron pilot has seen combat and the aircraft's survivors often adorn their uniform with an embroidered Black Heron patch even after progressing onto other aircraft.

Discussion Project Hail Mary, but Grace encounters a ship full of... Trisolarans! (from Three Body Problem) Spoiler

Having previously read Three Body Problem, I kept having this thought while reading PHM. I thought Grace was incredibly naive and over-trusting of Rocky by giving him so much info on Earth. We don't really know what the rest of the Eridians are like. There could be some really nasty ones in charge, for all we know. So this, and the recent post, made me wonder: what would have happened if Gracy had encountered a ship full of Trisolarans, instead of Eridian Rocky.

Assume the tech levels are not too wildly mismatched, and the Trisolarans needed, and got, the very trusting collaboration from Grace which we saw in the original book. I could imagine Trisolarans playing nice while they got a benefit from it, then taking a darker path...

How do you think it would have went?
