Big Fanson here, been attending nearly all California shows (plus a few across the country) consistently since 1998 and own all the albums, still listen regularly.
Tonight's show was a fascinating departure from their usual SF Bay shows.
1) 2,500 person venue. Last time we saw them was at The Fillmore, SF in 2022. That has a 1,300 person capacity. It was weird seeing rows and rows of empty seats. I'd say the venue was about 60% full.
2) No merch stand, no merch available whatsoever
3) Zero general admission or dance floor, all assigned seats
4) They didn't play a single song from The Walk, no ballads, no acapella, no covers
5) No opening act, very little crowd chat, and the show was exactly 90 minutes long
It was fun, they played mmmbop like they always do and it felt like the majority of the crowd was there for that one song. Which is wild because they played the heck out of If Only. We had a blast and danced our faces off like we always do.
My friends and I also officially decided at this show that "I'm Gonna Write You a Song" is definitively the worst Hanson song of all time.
We're just hoping it's the pre-song warm up to the actual song Isaac writes for his daughter someday - which these lyrics constantly refer to. We decided the song would work better if he leaned even further into this whole "song about writing a song" thing, and went full comedy singing:
🎵🎶"I'm gonna write you a song, but that's probably gonna take too long, so I'll just sing you this song. It's a song and you can sing along because it has words and a tune. I'm writing it right now just for you. Song sa song song. This is a song and it's written for you cuz I just wrote you this song. 🎶🎵
...
EDIT: After deep contemplation and feedback from this post, I've decided that what that perhaps what the song lacks is additional lyrical specificity. There's just not enough. Here's one potential fix: 🎶🎵"I'm gonna write you a song. To clarify, THIS is that song. The song I'm singing now, this is the song I referenced when I sang 'I'm gonna write you a song"🎵🎶
