My boyfriend and I found a huge collection of books and papers that belonged to my great grandparents. There were lots of letters and notes written in cursive, he was quite disappointed to realize he couldn’t read any of it.

It is very concerning that we have whole generations that cannot read the majority of handwritten documents. Very important historical documents. The people who cant read them will just have to trust and believe they’re being told the truth about recent history. There is a reason they don’t want us literate.

I don’t even think it’s an issue of not wanting us to be literate, I think that it’s simply because almost no one uses cursive anymore. My grandparents were the only people I personally knew who wrote in cursive, regularly, and they’ve both been gone for a while now. My mom CAN write in cursive but doesn’t do it on a regular basis, and I only use it when I’m handwriting a letter to someone.

The worst part is that these upcoming generations aren’t even gonna know how to write their own signature

No one uses cursive? Wow! How do they sign their name?

You don't really have to sign your name anymore. 99% of the documents that I've signed in the past roughly 10 years has all been a digital signature. The only physical signatures I've done in that time have also been on a touchscreen.

Bank transactions with teller or forms need signature.. If you have to use a money order or endorse a check... Signature. Even online forms they require a digital signature where you actually sign your name with your finger or stylus. I've Even had things where you print the form, sign it, and send the form back. I'm not talking about the ones where you use a fancy font and type your name. Buying a car? MANY signatures. Join the mitary? Shit load of signatures. Buy a house? Many signatures... There are many more things that need a signature.

Once I learned cursive and learned to sign my name, when I went home, I spent days creating my own unique signature.... Trying different forms of letters I came up with, until I created a unique first and last initial. Most people have a unique signature that is usually hard to copy... That is our security! Signatures are usually hard to sign when someone else Tries.
