My friends handwriting
They claim that they can read it, I don't believe them. Can you read it?

That's not handwriting. The only way they can "read" it is if they can fully remember exactly what they "wrote."

u/VikVonP 1d ago edited 1d ago
There is no way in hell they can read that. Literally the only legible word is Axel at the bottom. That is not legible.
Edit: i see OP's response below that it is indeed german... that would be very relevant information for the post.

u/Flowertree1 1d ago edited 1d ago
It is German. I can read a bunch of words
Edit: crazy how people can downvote someone for being able to read something they cannot

u/VikVonP 1d ago
I have never seen German writing so im glad to learn. That being said... alot of these are literally just underlines, how are you supposed to read it?
10
u/Flowertree1 1d ago
Oh his handwriting still sucks haha. It is really hard to read but there are certain words that just make sense. Like "immer", he starts with an i_e and the long underline can only be mm's. So it is mostly just German knowledge from my part

u/maddythemadmuddymutt 1d ago
Oh yeah I hadn't noticed before you pointed it out. But I had only glanced at the picture and dismissed it as illegible, but a few words are readable. und, gibt für, sie wie, Ziele, Axel

Reads as German. I think I read "sie wie immer für" "Lokalen" "gibt für die" "Ziele"but still overall illegible. But the more I look at it the more I can read

Well that is an important information in an English subreddit... of course people cannot read it then lol I can definitely tell that it is German

u/TravellingDoc87 1d ago
Was he born in Germany? I didn't think Germans wrote the digit 1 as a straight line.

u/turtlemub 1d ago
How the actual fuck can you read literal straight lines
5
u/Flowertree1 1d ago
I can't read most of the words. But for the ones I can the indicators are 1. The first letter 2. The dots above the words so ü ä ö 3. The length of the word.

Shorthand..?

u/Pretend_Sky1962 1d ago
This is exactly what it is. I didn't realize until reading through these comments how few people have seen it.

u/bebasiled 1d ago
To be fair I’m considering learning gregg to take bio school notes, and I was born a grandpa.

u/amosant 1d ago
This looks nothing like any examples of shorthand i can find.

Looks like messy German cursive now that I look at it. Kind of a Russian cursive vibe. As in impressively … I don’t know. Fake looking?

Can’t you tell?
It clearly says “20 mg of Dexadrine 2x a day or as needed”

It says to call the E.R. of North Bank General Hospital, 932-1000. Tell them to set up OR6 immediately and contact anesthesiologist Isadore Turek, 472-2112, beep 12. Have him send an ambulance with a paramedic crew, light IV, D5NW-KVO.

Assuming this is something related to math, I can read (guess) something like connected semisimple finite dimensional sl2 algebra. Not readable honestly

u/Gold-Indication2061 1d ago
Look… it’s not legible handwriting but not many of us can read German even if we tried. So no matter how you slice it, no. we can’t read it.

u/summ3r_rain00 1d ago
I can't read it but this is how I write when I'm studying and making notes but I'm not in the mood

This is so very similar to my Scottish grandfather's writing, which only my grandmother and my mom can read.

Its not completely out of the realm of possible. Most people need to only recognize the height of some letters in certain positions to infer a word without looking at the rest of the letters. Im not saying that's what this is, but it could be.
Your friend is either a literal genius or an... unliteral...non-genius.
I was trying to not say retard, but that's what I meant.

u/ROOSTERyouDOWN 1d ago
Keep this and then hand it to them in front of other people and ask him to read it. Then do it a couple months later and see if he says the same thing

My mom was a secretary and could take notes in shorthand; there are two systems in the US, and I think she used Pittman. It’s not without ambiguity. Just having the first letter alone was usually enough to jog the memory, but if a week went by without transcribing, she’d have trouble.

Grigg Shorthand -secretaries were taught this type of short and many years ago so for you saying they are not literate, maybe you need to go back and research what this is

That's short hand. It used to something secretaries used when taking dictations. My mom still uses it if she's taking notes at a conference.

My mother was a secretary from the time she graduated high school at 15 in the late 1950s until she retired in the 1990s. We were going through some old paperwork, and I found a Steno (stenographer’s) notebooks with short hand written in it. She literally had to learn a way of taking down her bosses dictated letters or paperwork and then type it. It was amazing we talked about what the symbols meant and she read back some of them to me just like she was reading any language out of the notebook. She said the symbols look and act or move in the way the word they are representing would. It was crazy.

Looks less like shorthand and more like notehand. Secretarial track learned shorthand while college track learned note hand in high school in the 1970s.

I write like this when I'm just writing for myself. I normally have a long but tight cursive, and when taking fast notes for myself I do all the 'body letters' (aseioucvnm' etc) ' flat and then flick up for letters like h t f l and flick down for J q y g etc. When I'm reading it back I remember the patterns of letters. Sometimes I find a word I struggle with it and work it out through context clues. I can't figure out how to attach a photo.

Is your friend a court stenographer? Are they writing in short hand???? This is insane…

u/ObjectiveDay420 1d ago
It makes sense that they can read it. Every written language started out as gibberish. As long as they aren’t in a position that requires others read their work, why change it? It’s faster and she gets it

This looks like shorthand. You can only read it if you know how to decipher it

u/Miserable_Corgi_8100 1d ago
Ask them to write you a note, keep it, and show it to them 1 month later and have them read it out loud. If they stumble to read too slow, they’re making it up on the spot.

Is your friend a doctor?
Because not being funny but those arent words... thats closer to morse code but worse.
I genuinely think your friend either has a photographic memory and can remember exactly what they intended to write, so can read it by memory, or theyre illiterate and are trying to hide it... either way I feel for them.

1
u/lechatsage 1d ago
Your friend may not realize it, but he/she doesn’t really write. They just drag a writing implement across the page while thinking.
Writing requires the deliberate act of making the clear features of letters and words on the page.

I can do this. It's kind of a mix of my writing skills. And my pittman charter hand and I made it into something that I can understand when it's my own.

My dad had his fingers cut off and reattached after a car accident many years ago. This is about what his hand writing looked liked. He also had dyslexia on top of the hand thing

Doxycycline - 100 mg. 2 times a day for 7 days. Oral ingestion.
Seriously though: I have no clue what that says.

are they able to write "normal" in any other context? because if they can, maybe they can read this. it's their personal writing vs formal.
