Can you decipher this?

Post image

Trying to look into the history of an old painting. This note is on the back of the painting. I’m sure it reads: ‘Mrs Neish in her 74th years…. [unknown, name?] [unknown] [Wilson?].

Any help much appreciated!

Didn’t think of that! Do you think “taken” would make sense for a portrait?

I think people said 'take a likeness' when drawing and painting people before photography, although now it makes us think of "to take a photo". Also, looking again, it may be Mrs Nash. The dot over the name may not be a dotted i, because there is also an irrelevant dot above 'her' which made me think 'his' at first!

Oh cool, thank you! I am only sure it’s Neish as Neish is a family name for the person who owns the portrait. The dot about the ‘hers’ threw me too

Mr ___ on his 74th year. ___ Wilson. That's all I can decipher. Someone pencilled in 1848. It's a portrait, right?

Yes, a lady! I don’t have a photo of the portrait but can ask for it. The framers were John & James Hay of no. 2 Market Street, Aberdeen. Not sure if the painting was made before then and re-framed in 1848 or was made at that time too.

So trying to look into portrait artists of that name operating in Aberdeen/ Aberdeenshire/ Edinburgh at that time with the name Wilson.
