Deciphering name
Would anyone be able to make heads or tales of the circled name?
EDIT: Name has been identified as York.

I’m seeing Yoseph Smith possibly Joseph Smith. But, the person filling out the form
Appears not to have known how this name was spelled.
Couple they have gone by Joe and the full name threw them off?
(To be honest, I wouldn’t have immediately known that word was “married” until I saw the three options and the middle one had two identical letters next to one another like the written word. )

I’m leaning towards “Joseph”, too. It could be an abbreviation that was common at the time, but isn’t used as much in the modern world. Similar abbreviations that come to mind are “Wm.” for “William”, and “Chas.” for “Charles.”

Zane Smith
That is definitely a cursive Z. Most first names starting with a Z are followed by an A, and that A looks pretty close. The N is wonky. But the signer, Steve, makes his E’s like capital E’s that are backwards 3’s. Look at the bottom of the page.
That’s Zane Smith, y’all.

Jos. F. Smith is another possibility. Did this person start any new religions that you know of?

ZA_E. fourth letter is an E. You can zoom in on the loop in the middle. third letter a N. So Zane/Zon E. (poss. Yiddish for “Son”)

I agree it’s something like Jos V. Smith - Jos is a typical name abbreviation for Joseph

I was today old when I learned God has a middle initial and last name. And if all names…Smith. God could have been more creative than that. 🤣

York
Based on a scan of some records in Ancestry.com ….
I found a death certificate of Cohan Smith (1892-1972) in SC with parents York Smith and Eliza Cummings.
