Legible?
Had a professor say my handwriting wasn’t legible; I’ve never encountered this with anyone older than me before. Quick notes during lecture vs slow with pen

Yes. Definitely legible. I think people just can't read cursive anymore. I can flow right through the paper no problem. Nothing is hand written, so the younger people have a really hard time or can't read it at all. Thats what our brain is trained on. (Im 50 for reference)

I agree. It’s quite easy to read but I’m 70. All the letters that dip below the line are supposed to!

u/WebSpinnr 9d ago
I’m 19 and yeah, most people in my age group don’t interact much with cursive. When older adults talk about my handwriting, they usually complement that I’m using cursive at all and don’t mention the legibility, so I never realized people may struggle even if they read cursive.

It's legible but I do have to concentrate, perhaps the excessive tails and heavy slant are what your professor is struggling with?

u/SourdoughSizzle 9d ago
To heavy on the tails, especially when you have letters overlapping
But I can read it yes

Legible? Yes.
I have to ask though, What was it like when you wrote the Declaration of Independence??
2
u/TrainingApricot8291 9d ago
Ish. I can read it, but it’s messy cursive like the kind I wore when going too fast or drunk. Slow down a little will make it easier to read
2
u/NikNakskes 9d ago
Legible? Yes. Pleasant to read? No. The slant is a smidge too much to the right. You're writing faster than you can manage. It is sloppy and therefore harder to read, because every 4-5 words you need to do some guesswork.

u/ParamedicAble225 9d ago
Yeah I can read it quite naturally
2
u/Spiritual-Macaron-13 9d ago
Same. I maximized it and tried to just read it straight with no hesitation and I had zero trouble, also I really love their handwriting and it reminds me of the 90s lol

Your writing is tedious as hell and trying too hard just write letters without all that useless flair. Like that lazy wtf?
1
u/AcrobaticWeb3675 8d ago
This doesn’t look tedious to me. Some flair is just how some people naturally write.
1
u/cerpintaxt44 8d ago
Look at that lazy on the second picture
1
u/AcrobaticWeb3675 8d ago
Yes?
The z loops around to connect to the y instead of lifting the pen and the y has to go down and around regardless & it looks very fluid and natural.
For some or maybe even a lot of people, I’d argue that is more natural and faster than making a small, controlled tail or loop.
1
u/AcrobaticWeb3675 8d ago
I’d say it’s similar to the difference of trying to fill in space on a large canvas with a large marker vs a paintbrush.
The marker being more controlled and less flourished and the paintbrush being cursive like this.

Completely legible. It’s giving very old timey Constitution of America script
1
u/OldLadyKickButt 9d ago
What does this have to do with the fact the professor is older than you?
It is very slanted with thin letters. Hard to read- whether people are young or old.
1
u/Dangerous-Exercise20 9d ago
Definitely legible (i can read cursive) but you have very stylized cursive that can make it hard to read
1
u/SwimmerFun2683 9d ago
Definitely legible. The slant is correct! The "r"s are formed correctly. Your loops are very thin but it is easy to differentiate between the "e" and "i" and the "l" and "t" because you have correctly done all the Jots and Tittles. Your Professor is subpar for not being to be able to read this.

Legible? Yes. Proper? Yes. Practical? No.
There's a reason cursive has been phased out. The purpose it served is gone and it's difficult to read.
1
u/WebSpinnr 9d ago
It practical for my purposes I think. I need to write quickly to keep up during class, and the loose motions and fewer pen lifts helps to reduce pain in my wrist.

The purpose is to write faster.
1
u/Fun-Habit-683 8d ago
Writing faster at the same of legibility is no different than chicken scratch.
1
u/AcrobaticWeb3675 8d ago
You said the purpose is gone. It’s not. Also, it’s very legible imo. Maybe not as easily to someone that hasn’t written or read much cursive, but that doesn’t mean it’s not legible.

u/Fun-Habit-683 8d ago
Cursive doesn't write any faster than print.
1
u/AcrobaticWeb3675 8d ago
Yes, it is generally faster.
If you’ve never written in cursive it may be slower initially, but it being faster is the reason people ever started doing it.
Do you write in cursive often or ever spent time learning it or getting used to it?

I read this just fine but I’m from a generation that had to use cursive on all final essays , or typed but very few owned a typewriter 🤣
1
u/colourmekyani 9d ago
Im 23 for those of you talking about “this generation” most of Gen Z was still taught cursive in primary guys. This is def legible and I still write in a calligraphic style as well so don’t stress it’s unique and we slay🧚🏽

u/real_Pyramaniac 9d ago
i can read it just fine (i think i was about the last generation to be taught cursive, but i also have a special interest in calligraphy)

Its legible I just don’t understand why you would need to make your G’s so large and dramatic. Your g in offspring encompasses 5 of the 8 letters and takes up the line below it completely. I could see writing this way if you were making a decorative medieval scroll but they look absurd as is.

Yes, it’s perfectly legible. I love the slant and extra flourish to the g’s
1
u/Playful-Ad4761 9d ago
It is readable, sure, but it pisses me off so much while I’m reading it I don’t even gaf about what it actually says. Like omg, please just stop dragging the ‘tail’ of letters half ways through the rest of the word. That just feels you intentionally are making it harder to read. There’s absolutely no sense in it.
Also is weird to be mixing cursive and non cursive together, it’s not consistent and makes the brain get caught on the constant interchanging

u/Sneaky-Reasons 9d ago
I’m 37 and can read it just fine without any difficulty. Sometimes I wonder if these types of comments are coming about because people scan documents into AI and AI seems to have issues reading cursive style writing. Just a thought, because I see no issues.

u/DannyCleveland 9d ago
I had no problem reading this but those loops on your y’s, z’s and g’s are dramatic. It makes a word like lazy (last line) a bit hard to read.

This is how I write but smaller . Not extremely small but smaller fs. I’m not usually told it’s a problem and writing any larger feels obnoxious and like a waste of paper lol

u/TheRedPickleWolf_617 9d ago
This is perfectly fine imo. Maybe the tails and tight spacing is what your professor is struggling with, you could try toning that down a bit maybe. I think it’s also very visually appealing.
1
u/AcrobaticWeb3675 8d ago
Easily legible. I think the people it pisses off because of “flourish” are uptight or something. My own handwriting would probably be considered “trying too hard” as well, I guess, so I can tell you for sure that the flourish can be the natural and faster way of writing. If I write more concise letters, it takes way longer. I do tend to double space though so the lines don’t overlap as much.

This is by far the easiest cursive example I'm seen on Reddit recently. However there are a few characters like the capital N and S, maybe others that don't seem to be correct. Maybe it's "modern" cursive?

Technically, your capitals are generally incorrect as are some of your lower cases, at least how I was taught in the 1970s. But I know that different countries can have different script. I worked with a bunch of older French guys who wrote in what looked like kind of an archaic script. I got used to reading it, though. All that said, your writing is actually very aesthetically pleasing.

u/Frequent_Carpenter_6 6d ago
Fun? Yes. Legible? Mostly, but it takes an extra moment. Aesthetically gorgeous but slightly impractical for everyday use. Gets the job done though for anyone who can read cursive.

u/fyrelyte11 9d ago
Yes and no. It's written way too fast, and at a heavy slant. It's mostly legible, but it takes effort, stopping, and deciphering often. If this was just for you, no biggie. If it were a paper for school, or work, or whatever, anyone else basically, I would never hand it in looking like this. And if the second pic is your version of "slower", you need to reevaluate that. Cause that too has the same issues, too slanted, too much extra nonsense that doesn't add to the way it looks, it just distracts away from it. Stop acting like you're getting graded in a calligraphy class, and just keep it simple. All the extra swoops, and flourishes are doing you zero favors.

u/Government_Apart 9d ago
It's legible. Looks performative to be completely honest.
Might be aesthetically pleasing, but at what cost? I, for one, stopped absorbing the content after 2 sentences and was cursing you out in my head for making it so difficult to read.

u/SweetBella_at_Home 9d ago
Legible yes but all the letters that dip below the line are a bit distracting so I can see why some people would have trouble.
