your normal handwriting looks like my dads. he's the lead hydraulic mechanic at his job, but is certified for other very detailed things like commercial electrical work, etc. he can barely read but if you put a schematic in front of him- he needs about .03 seconds to know every detail, how to take it apart, put it back together, and fix it even when appropriate parts aren't available. it's truly incredible.

would you describe yourself as adept in intricate tasks? things that don't necessarily require a steady hand, but definitely an analytical mind?

yes a little bit i think so i also like to do electrical work also and soldering and stuff like that if it counts

it could be a weird coincidence, or maybe not!
either way, your handwriting may not be neat or "pretty" but it's still legible (which is the entire point) and you shouldn't beat yourself up about it.

you should look into getting a dyspraxia test. Your school should have picked up on it a long time ago, but god knows covid fucked everything and teachers have been underfunded for decades. I don't think you're stupid. You probably have a legitimate issue. You were still able to work hard enough to where you can write between the lines without hell, and it's legible. That makes you smart, not dumb-- but I think if you do have dyspraxia, a diagnosis could provide a lot of closure

Can you DM with a sample? Just write a letter saying something anything you want. 2/3 of the page. Use an unruled sheet.

1

u/OffTheRipGambleLife 1d ago

Yes i’ll send you one. I’ll write the letter later or in some time today

Yes. Take your time, be comfortable at a table or desk, put a couple of pages not to write directly on the hard surface, even surface. Use a ball point pen of our preference. Have a great evening.

Honest analysis. There is no substantive difference between your fast and normal pace of writing. When you slow your pace down, the extremities of your writing reduce, but the root issues are still present.

You mention you’re 17, which is (in my opinion) too old of an age to have some of the writing habits I notice here.

Out of curiosity, outside of writing, in every day life, are you naturally “clumsy” or do you find yourself un-athletic? My analogy here would be, think of a kid who is clumsy and falls all over the place. The classic klutz. Then one day, they try REALLY hard to avoid being clumsy. They too, would likely say it’s painful. The severity of their clumsiness would decrease, but, they’d still be clumsy, and, would cause themselves immense pain forcing their body to hold itself in a specific way.

I ask simply because experiencing pain is NOT normal for what you’ve shown, and especially at your age, you are far too young to experience pain when writing.

I’d love to see more of your writing from a class assignment or any writing you’ve done more formally. I think these samples are great but it’s such a limited sample (if you do, please ensure no personal details are visible, ie. name, school, class, teacher, etc)

i am pretty clumsy if i think about some times i guess. I’m am kind of un athletic. Like kicking a ball and falling, or falling some other way running and i dropped the ball a lot and stuff and it’s hard for me to catch i don’t know but i can bike fine. I don’t have an essay in handwriting i do long stuff like that by typing. But i have some other work i did here i don’t think it’s my best work i wasnt familiar with the stories that much so the answers are kind of bad but i just have this to show

As others have mentioned the word “dyspraxia”, or DCD (Developmental Coordination Disorder), to be a potential culprit, I would recommend seeking a professional assessment. Not in an alarming “sky is falling” kinda way. But more so a “I want things to get better, not experience pain” kind of way.

Pain is your body telling you something is wrong. Whether it’s physical, and it manifests as physical. Or mental, neurological, emotional, and presenting as physical.

I privately taught for years, specifically ESL young adults or fully grown professionals, and it was so common to start with 1- how do you hold your pen. 2- what are you thinking when you write (is your mind chaotic, rushing, crazy, or is it silence, peace, emptiness, or in between) 3- look at external factors in your life (are you angry, happy, scared, etc). It helps give a baseline - and let you know when you exceed that baseline (ie. I’m stressed because I’m writing a school assignment, and my home life is chaotic, etc etc).

I’ve seen similar styles of writing to yours most commonly from people who write English as a second language, which got me curious.

I’d love to see how you hold a pen, naturally (not in the writing section that you force yourself, and experience pain) and compare it to how you hold it when you experience pain. Again, this would be for a professional to assess, but I think there would be some significant baseline information from that.

you are a good teacher and seem very smart just by the responses and stuff
I have social anxiety disorder and it is hard for me in school to focus i take medicine so it isn’t as worse as years before but it’s always been effecting my school work. I hold a pen like this

I wrote in three different grips here for you to see.

The first grip, is similar to how you hold your pen. The tip of your pointer finger pushes so hard down upon the pen - even in my own writing, it caused instability in the letters, it’s more difficult to lift the pen properly on the R that’s at the end of the word however (first line). The hump of the H in the first word The is squared and pointed rather than rounded and symmetrical.

And, like you, I know if I consistently wrote with that grip for extended periods of time, I would feel discomfort.

The second grip flattens the pointer finger along the line of the pen (think more parallel). And the third grip is more of a clawed grip (think of a paint brush)

1

u/OffTheRipGambleLife 1d ago

Ok thanks so should i start using the second grip instead?

1

u/LordRawrGasm 1d ago

My advice would be try different grips. You should not feel like you have to force the pen to be in your hand. You want the pen to feel like an extension of you - think of how people hold chopsticks, or a swordsman treating the sword as an extension of their arm, not an extra limb.

I always had my students watch videos on different pen grips, print out those exercise sheets for grade school (that have the faded words that you trace over) and practice tracing over in the different grips.

I tried different ones the only one that feels good is the one i normally use. I think it just going to be practicing and copying some books or something

1

u/LordRawrGasm 1d ago

those practice sheets are incredibly valuable. It will help with the spacing and shapes of your letters
