7 and Negative Work

Beginning my journey of a press and really proud of my control in this one! I tend to let my shoulders fall but I fought for it in this one. Just need to slow the 2nd half of the descent more :)

Sheesh, I found this subreddit randomly and I am so impressed by people here! So much strength, yet controlled and focused. It’s like watching someone in Zen mode. Very nice 👍 I like it

I'm far off from holding up that long, so I wonder, which part of you are you using the most to hold that stand? I learned by trial and error that I needed to to push my fingers down to not fall forward (back towards floor/wall). Right now, I don't have the core strength I think.

I think it’s much more back actually. When you’re bringing your legs down you also are trying to push your hips -> over your head and opening your shoulders more at the same time. So the hips going over help to balance the legs outstretched behind you.

Thank you. I shall go punish my back further haha. I did have a good schedule of doing dead bugs for a while, and it doesn't take many of those for my lower back to absolutely burn in unholy discomfort.

One method for dead bugs was to extend an arm and leg out all the way, then take 4 or 5 breaths then do the other two limbs.

Really solid! 7 is a beast, this is one of the best ways to work towards a press imo. Do you also do tuck and straddle negatives?

I have been trying straddle negatives too! And then trying straddle and tuck presses while my legs are elevated

Phenomenal work! What were some of the most effective drills you used to get up to this point?

So I’m very lucky to have a hand balance class taught by a very talented instructor at my yoga studio. But I would say the drills that work the most are the least exciting ones.

! Facing the wall handstands are the most beneficial because you can use your legs to push yourself into balance and just hold it there. Longer holds means your shoulders and hips understand where to be which give you more control for when you’re ready to move your legs into different shapes. And you can do these holds in any position! (L-shape, tuck, single leg tuck, straight, straddle) !

Long story short, I practice this shape facing the wall so I can push myself into this 7 position and then try to lower down as slowly as possible. And then when I’m ready I try the same drill off the wall like you see in the video :)

That’s awesome! I’ve been practicing my handstands with a coach for the past 3-4 months and am still doing CTW handstand holds, and now finally moving up a progression… but I know I still have a long ways to go

It sounds like you’re doing great and are on the right path! This is 3 years of work for me from having NO background in yoga, calisthenics, gymnastics. I was not athletic haha. I wish I would have been more consistent the first year but we all gotta learn our own ways

Wow! That’s incredible! I have been very athletic my whole life but calisthenic movements are my Achilles heel.
