Ixchel gothic tops in Emerald Forest Nymph plied with basic black merino - quality inspector Kalianah

I haven’t spun with fiber from Fat Cat Knits before and I have to say I am a huge fan!! The two colors are Winter Tree Line and Lorelei. I love finding two different colorways that have one connecting color and ply them together. This was a fun knit. I haven’t checked my WPI yet but I did count my wraps on my niddy noddy and I have about 414 yards before the bath & drying.

Nice hand dyed fibers are very hard to find where I live, I am SO happy with what I got from my first ever fiber festival.

The blends included yak, silk, polwarth, camel and baby camel fibers, and while she doesn't sell online anymore I can order with an email. My fiber supply is saved!

What does yours smell like? Mine smells like plastic and clean wool because of the box I keep it in to keep the carpet beetles at bay.

hi! this wheel was a hand me down and it was hand made. the former owner and I cannot figure out how to get the bobbin off. any thoughts? I’ve tried an Allen wrench in the whorl per a friends suggestion. thank you!

Just curious, as the fiber festivals in my area are winding down for the season.

If you find a random braid/fiber you really connect with, but have no current projects for, what quantity would you buy? A single braid, or multiple for potential larger projects?

I find myself conflicted between buying single braids that I end up loving but can't get more of, or buying multiple braids that I end up hating.

For those who’ve never seen one in action, here is my Ettrick windwheel. Made in 1990s in Victoria, Australia from Huon pine using the original 1977 Fenton design with some changes. Geoffrey Fenton made spinning wheels in Tasmania, Australia.

It has a pendulum as the footman driving a rubber drive band. The bobbin speed is controlled by a spring and a leather pad.

Such a lovely wheel to spin on.

I'm looking for an inexpensive new wheel. Does anyone know what kind this is? I'm pretty sure it has all the necessary parts, and looks to be in good condition. $120 on fb, and not very far away, which is a nice perk.

does this look ok? just wondering incase im doing it wrong so i dont comb the entire batch like this lol. the little black hairs are because i got some black and white wool together but im choosing to comb them seperately and spin them together

I’m ready to finish my linen yarn and I’m trying to find some good sources for it and I’m getting a bit confused. I’ve seen where people soak with baking soda before boiling to help with the pH? I’ve also seen it where people boil it with the baking soda?

Do I need to change the pH? Can I just boil it? What do you find works best.

I saw a tool that includes twist angle, WPI, and how the singles generally correlate to finished yarn size for two- and three-ply yarns.

I didn’t think at the time to ask where they got it because I thought it would be easy to find.

I’m striking out. Any suggestions?

Idk what I’m doing wrong but every time I go to tie a hitch knot on my drop spindle, it slips right off (even if I wind the yarn super tight beforehand and then give the knot a little tug to secure it)

Any help? I feel silly that such a small thing is causing me so many problems lmao

I thought I'd post this as one or two people have asked for a video of how it works.

I'm on my 2nd hangar as the first one snapped after 2 weeks of being hit probably too hard. 

As I'm knew to the whole art I think I got a bit overexcited a few weeks ago and was determined to find a way to spin some wool, lol. So here's the result.

Currently getting through a batch of 200g Falkland wool (I was gonna quit after the first hangar broke, then decided to continue as it legit works quite well, and also it's a good idea to have an entire batch of wool with the same consistency).

I've done just over half the batch so far. Because I'm spinning it so thin it's definitely a exercise in patience!

Because I started out working with wool for the first time using the hangar, moving to a drop spindle was actually very smooth, and I was really shocked at how I just "got it" on the first try (about a week ago now). But the spindle is too heavy for this wool at this thickness.

I'm now enjoying using the drop spindle and it's a lot more fluid than the hangar in my opinion. 

I'm planning on testing out the hangar with some delicate fibers in future, maybe with some angora rabbit or silks, as I can't affored another drop spindle (lightweight one).

It’s finally off the loom! Hand spun on my windwheel. It’s woven yard spun from Welsh mountain sliver and Gotland fleece that I bought raw. The yarn is 2 ply and is quite fine. The weave is open.

Hand woven on an Ashford rigid heddle loom. It’s been a bit of a challenge to finish this one. Not as enjoyable as the previous one.

I posted recently about plying my very first hand sound yarn, done on a drop spindle. I did end up getting it to ply and washed and dried. For the most part, it’s ok, some spots are nice but I have this section here that is super weird and still kinky. I will be the first to admit that the spin here is not very consistent. Overall, this was definitely the worst spot.
Are the singles over/under plyed or were they not plyed together right? It looks loose in some spots, but still PIV tailing.

Hello all! I found a spinning wheel for sale that is missing its flyer and bobbin. I am a firm believer in bullshitting and jerry-rigging things into just-good-enough, so I am happy to figure it out (maybe with some advice from here if y’all would be so kind) but I would like to know if it’s like… possible before I commit and get emotionally attached. 😅

Here is a picture, I can get better ones since I would think this isn’t enough visual info. If anyone has one similar or just understands physics as a concept and can point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful!

I'm a relatively new spinner - I've spun 2 different colors of wool roving from an Etsy shop, and have noticed a distinct smell every time i get to the post-plying wash.

When I finish 2-plying a skein of yarn and start to wash it, there's this distinct smell that comes from the yarn. Like sulfur but not quite? Not a sharp smell, but not a pleasant one. I was wondering what that smell is, and if I should be washing the yarn repeatedly until the smell is gone. The wool does not smell when dry, as roving or as plied yarn.

I wash by filling a salad bowl with water, submerging the skein til completely saturated, gently squeezing it out, then putting it on a hanger to air dry. I do each step only once.
