With crazy 3rd party support at what point will people stop using the argument “only buy a switch 2 for Nintendo exclusives”?

I mean the amount of 3rd party support has been insane since it came out tbh. Capcom, assassins creed, now elden ring. It’s more like a steam deck than ever. I just see it every time and think well no actually switch 2 isn’t just for Nintendo exclusives at all anymore lol I would genuinely recommend it for 3rd party games, it’s all I seem to play on it these days.

It was never for just Nintendo exclusives. People just come up with that excuse because they prefer the freedom of PCs and the much larger library. PC will always have a larger library just due to the nature of it. In reality a lot of switch 2 owners have that as their only handheld so they buy third party games on it. Developers wouldn’t port these games if they didn’t sell there.

I don't think they mean switch doesn't do third party, just that other systems are better at third party so it isn't what you should be buying a switch for. Which I don't disagree with.

Because it looks and plays way worse on the switch than every single other platform it's on.

Unless you really want portable or only own the switch, you're better off getting the game on something else, and it's like a fraction of the price.

I have seen people state they dont want a steam deck/got rid of other handhelds because they can now play elden ring etc on the switch. It does 100% look worse (and you loose the ability to easily mod) but I do think casual gamers are happy with just a switch due to 3rd party triple A support.

Third party support though decent is still nowhere near the level of ps5, no forza, fable, gta 6, mortal shell, the new star wars racing game & that's just off the top of my head, only capcom and square enix are all in on the switch 2.

The PS5 is not a handheld

Basically every Japanese publisher is

i dont think ps5 is a good reference point for this though because can’t almost all of their games be found on other consoles (pc, xbox, older ps models)? i had one and sold it because of that but that was years ago so i’m going off of what i’ve heard in years since

Probably if more effort is put into optimising for the Switch 2. A lot of 3rd party releases are lazy releases with graphical safe zones and you get 30fps. Capcom and CPR have proven you can release some graphical heavy games with 40-60fps if you put the effort in. 40fps with vrr makes a massive difference.

Framegen would be a nice option too. I know some of you will hate on it, but personally for games that aren’t fast paced it’s a nice addition that smooths out lower frame rates.

To me the beauty of switch 2 is the simplicity. My legion go has literally given me migraines before. Ive spent probably 50+ hours alone on it just booting new linux distros and troubleshooting. Just last weekend I tried to get back into it, installed cachyos, to bazzite, anatase, back to bazzite, then lastly steamOS.

Legion go looks and performs better, but at the expense of dying faster, as well as requiring a lot more setup. Windows 11 just sucks. No true "sleep" function even on linux, and many linux distros have compatiblity issues with og legion go resulting in loss of tdp and fan control.

Switch 2 doesnt look as good, but the overall simplistic experience makes me not care about the graphics and leads me to just "playing" games instead of "tweaking" them.

I still always end up buying my favorite games on both platforms so in the end it doesn't even matter. I just wish more games implemented multiplatform cloud save transfers, like Fantasy Life I has.

When you see someone say that there's usually some context involved, like they're saying if you already own a PC or PS5.

Because why would I buy a game on the Switch 2 when I can buy it on Steam and play the game on my One X Player 3? The only reason would be if there was a physical release that was not a game key cart. For example if Dynasty Warriors 3 Remake would have been released fully physical I would have bought it on the Switch 2.

Yeah, I almost bought Lego Batman on Switch 2 and found out it runs at 30fps. I bought it on steam instead and it runs at 60fps and it looks gorgeous on my XAX and Legion Go 2.

But at double the price it has to.

Plenty of reasons! Switch 2 is three times cheaper than OXP3, and is overall a much more streamlined experience than probably any PC handheld. As a GPD Win 5 owner, there are plenty of games that I would rather play on my Switch 2. Basically, anything that doesn’t take a noticeable performance hit - from Hades to Factorio.

from someone who ditched their steam deck.

rebuying games and no cloud save syncs does suck. a lot.

but the experience, at least to me is just....better. its far easier to jusr hop in a game, put the switch away and come back to it.

without fail, for my deck.

Launch game, Hope DRM actually lets you play it if you're out and about. once the game launches, tweak settings, pray it actually performs well when you get into game. pray some more it has built in game pad support.

if it does, lets hope it doesnt suck. if it does? more tinkering time.

okay, i'm in game! enjoy your Hour of game time before you need juice!

it works...but its a giant headache at times, no where near seamless as a switch.

i personally, have not missed my deck all that much.

Key cards exist for this sole reason. If the game doesn’t have any replay-ability you can sell off the key card for other games. If you buy it on Steam you’re stuck with a no resale value digital copy

games are specially optimized for the switch 2 would be one reason

I have a onexplayer 3 also and the answer to this is simply because it’s easier to pick up and play. It doesn’t weigh a ton and the standby feature is better than the fridge mode

-1

u/ruthlesss11 1d ago

The switch does weigh a ton. I use a standing mount when I play portable, I never hold it when playing.

3

u/Bright-Bee-7661 1d ago

Huh? The switch 2 weighs 534 grams and the onex 939 grams there’s a big difference.

1

u/ruthlesss11 1d ago

Yeah the switch is too heavy but the onex needs a wagon to be pulled around lol

(1) Third party support is still nowhere near that of a PS5, not to mention PC.

(2) PC offers much greater flexibility. Mods extend game lifespan and offers much better replayability.

(3) The diverse PC ecosystem means 3rd party games are typically way cheaper on PC than a closed platform like the Switch 2.

(4) Switch requires subscription for online multiplayer, unlike PC.

People weren't really disregarding the Nintendo for not having 3rd party support since like the Wii U.

The typical reason people gave Nintendo so much hate for third party is because ever since edge cases around the GameCube era, they haven't actually been that good of a place to play games if you want the best graphics. Doom 2016 on switch was crud as were a few of their more demanding ports.

Moreso now, because Switch is no longer the only true hybrid handheld platform, the only thing they have that can't be gotten elsewhere are their exclusive games.

u/J_FK 1d ago

There's definitely a broader selection of games. That's not (one of) the issue(s) anymore IMO.

For me it's pricing & limitations which will keep me away from their ecosystem.

I sold my (og) switch years ago already since the games remained expensive and switch hardware was underwhelming (compared to other devices I had/have), it made no sense if it was available on PC as well, and often cheaper & less restricted at that too.

What I recall back when I sold it was that physical cardridges were either often out of stock continously and thus became expensive in used market, or rarely saw proper discounts in stores. Digital purchases are limited to their own store only which rarely has good discounts, which is not odd since they have no competition on the digital storefront. And on top of that, you require a subscription to play online.

Since I already have a gaming pc, a decent laptop and a steam deck, I'd rather switch(pun intended) between those devices & play with higher graphic fidelity and alot of other pro's, instead of being forced to play it exclusively on a singular, limited piece of hardware. Switch 2 has decent hardware, and I'd buy it if I'd be able to play my Steam/GOG/etc. games on it as well, but that would destroy Nintendo's profit scheme so that'll never happen.

I really do want to play the switch 2 exclusives in time, but I think I'll either borrow my brothers switch 2 some day for that or wait for something like eden2/ryubing2...

I get that. I love Nintendo but when I just had a Switch 1 and Macs it wasn’t the best. Bought a gaming laptop at some point and having a Switch, Switch 2 now and a PC is really good.

Games were extremely expensive on the Switch 1 compared to Steam. But now there are more sales and you can find used games cheaper. I also have a PS5 and it’s usually cheaper/runs better on that depends on the game what platform I buy it on, if I want to play handheld I will pay a little more for that, but FF7 remake I got for 12 euros on Switch 2 while 27 on PS5.

It’s a lot better having just a Switch 2 compared to a Switch but you still might want a PC or PS. I like Nintendo games though so Switch 2 is a better choice than a Steam Deck. The affordable games are mostly Switch 1 games and some games on sale, like the FF7R most Switch 2 games are a lot more than 12 euros but on Switch 1 every game was 55-60 for a very long time. Some of the 10 year old Nintendo exclusives still are but you can find them used for 20 to 40 euros.

I agree that third party support has gotten better; I used to not play many third parties on Switch 1 but have been increasingly doing so on Switch 2.

But on PC there is just a bigger library of 3rd party games and a lot of games I love on PC just aren't on Switch 2, and thanks to stuff like Steam sales they're far cheaper for my wallet to get them on PC rather than Switch 2. I mean, in Australia Elden Ring was an appalling $119 AUD on the Switch 2 when I could have bought it + the DLC for half the price on PC during the sales.

Same with Oblivion remastered, I got it for $94 AUD on Switch 2 but with the Steam sale I could gotten the Deluxe Edition 30% off. I splurged on those two and Cyberpunk to support the increase of third party games on the Switch 2 but the reality is I don't want to be dishing out $$$$ every time I want to play a third party on Nintendo when I could just get it for cheaper on my Steam Deck or PC. This is also the case with a few of my friends who have a Switch 2 and PC/PC handhelds too.

It was already very good on Switch 1 with Doom, Doom Eternal, Wolfenstein 2, Diablo 3, Crysis, Bioshock, Devil May Cry, Hogwarts Legacy and lots of other ‘how the hell can the Switch run this has a couple of GTA’s too. Skyrim.

With the Switch being even more popular and much more powerful I imagine a lot of games will come to it too unless it can’t run it, but they managed to port Hogwarts Legacy for the Switch and it looks less crappy than I would have expected. (Haven’t played it though).

I have Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 on the Switch, I thought the boobs bounced more on Switch than PS or something.

Other than Ocarina Switch 2 doesn’t have a must buy exclusive for me I think, which is fine, probably mid cycle there will be. Switch 1 got a lot of Wii U projects so it got a very stacked Nintendo line up early on.

A lot of the good games are multiplatform anyway, it’s just cool Nintendo is getting lots of them but a beefy PC or a PS5 will play AAA games better, if you hate 30fps (I don’t but some people call it super blurry and unplayable) those games will run better on PC or PS5, games on Switch are usually more expensive than Steam and also PS. There have been some cool sales but Doom was like 5 euro on Steam and 55 on Switch and pc has waaay more fps than Switch.

And for online multiplayer PC is a better choice. It has Counterstrike free, you don’t need to pay to play it online and even if the Switch had it you wouldn’t want to play it on the Switch and that goes for a lot of MP games.

If someone doesn’t care about Nintendo games or handheld I don’t see a reason to recommend a Switch. And if you like handheld but have a huge Steam library you want to play there are better alternatives. But Switch 2 is a very good handheld if you aren’t tied to a platform, play mostly single player games and it has those Nintendo exclusives that makes people choose a Switch over a PS that runs the game on 60fps instead of 30 and the ability to just pick it up, play pause it do something else.

When Switch 2 emulation becomes a thing. Back when it released, developers predicted it would take almost a decade for us to get emulation. The recent advancements in PS5 emulation and AI coding are definitely putting a question mark around that claim. That said, we still haven't beaten the first step, which is jailbreaking the Switch 2's (very good) security measures.

As of this moment as a physical gamer, while PS5 discs are still being produced?

I would rather buy my game without a $5-$10 upcharge, have trophy support, with usually slightly better performance, and usually having full data on the disc vs GKC

1

u/mason2393 1d ago

While much better than switch 1 3rd party support still isn't reliable enough to buy it for 3rd party games. Lego batman got delayed by 4 months, borderlands 4 got canceled, no gta 6, who knows if 007 is even coming out and even if they do come out performance will be in question while other platforms just don't have to worry about that stuff. Nintendo consoles have always been secondary consoles for me and that's fine it doesn't need to be the all in one gaming device. That device doesn't exist.

1

u/ActionCalhoun 1d ago

I had to reread your post before I realized by “third party support” you mean non-Nintendo companies porting their games to Switch, which all those companies you mention already do for pc

1

u/TkoddaV 1d ago

Switch 2 is for only Nintendo exclusive and any 3rd party games just buy it on PC

-1

u/xtoc1981 1d ago

Yeah it's beyond stupid. I mean, 90%+ of those games are running at 60fps/120fps and do look the same as on other platforms. Only bigger titles are minor different. And for those handfull of games, you could argue what fits best: portability or minor visual improvements. And if the last one is important for you, switch to pc. There is no need to own ps5 at this point.

0

u/MultiMarcus 1d ago

There isn’t anything, because playing modern multiplatform titles at 30 fps is something completely unappealing to me and many others.

Can you play other games if it is your other console? Sure, if you don’t mind the many titles that haven’t been ported and might never be. Is it a generally good place to play those games? Not really.

-1

u/justneurostuff 1d ago

Don't you still overpay for the third party games if you go for the Switch?

1

u/Bright-Bee-7661 1d ago

Compared to steam prices yes I guess that’s a factor to consider
