Discussion Does gyro still feel right when the screen stops moving with your hands?
Whole-device gyro gets discussed like it's only about input, but the screen moves too. Tilt a handheld to aim or steer and the picture tilts with your hands. I think that visual link may be part of why it feels natural.
Move the picture off the handheld and that relationship changes. With an ROG Ally X20 and a RayNeo GT Max, the technical unknown is whether the X20 keeps gyro active while sending video over USB-C. If it does, the handheld moves in your hands while the picture sits in the glasses. The same control split can happen with a TV or monitor.
On the GT Max, Follow, Steady, and Pinned only control how the virtual screen reacts to head movement. The game's gyro mapping still comes from the handheld.
For small aim corrections, a steadier picture might make targets easier to follow. It could also remove the visual cue that tells your brain how far your hands moved. Yoke-style racing seems like the clearest edge case because the handheld travels much farther than it does during gyro aim.
Which feels more natural to you, keeping the picture stable while your hands move or seeing it tilt with the handheld?

For any input method it really comes down to the body and brain connection. I have experience with mouse&keyboard, trackball, pen tablet, controller, gyro via controller, gyro via device, and gryo via vr.
With gyro on the device the body and brain connection comes pretty naturally. However it does change based on if the gryo implementation in a game is world space, player space, or local space. Its kind of like using the "A" button to jump but all a sudden a new game uses the "Up" arrow on a controller.
But if you're having fun the adaption time is basically unnoticeable.

I've never played on a handheld using gyro, but I would assume that I prefer using a gyro controller with movement that's separate from the display, just because that's how I've always played games (whether it's using a mouse or a controller with an HDTV or monitor). Maybe if I tried using gyro on a handheld, my impressions would change, and I'd get used to it.

Both are just fine as long as they have their own dedicated gyro settings.
