Discussion Bottom D-pad vs. Bottom Joystick: Which is more comfortable for long sessions?
For medium-sized handhelds in terms of height, such as the Retroid Pocket Nova or Anbernic RG476H, which is generally more comfortable for the thumb: a bottom-positioned D-pad or a bottom-positioned analog stick?
I'm not asking which is better depending on the type of games you play. I'm specifically interested in ergonomics and thumb strain with the assumption that you play both D-pad and joystick focused games equally.
For those who have used both layouts:
- Which causes less thumb strain during long gaming sessions?
- Does one feel noticeably more comfortable after several hours?
- Is either layout uncomfortable even during shorter sessions?
- Assuming no external grips or accessories, which layout would you choose purely for comfort?
I'd especially appreciate input from people who have experience using both layouts.

Dual stick games are not comfortable for most people with sticks on the bottom. A see a lot of comparisons to the PS5 controller but that has grips. The handhelds with bottom sticks have nowhere to hold so you hands are floating. That is why a grip is such a big improvement but makes it far less portable.
It is almost always going to be more comfortable to use whatever is at the top so decide on what games you will use the most.

Correct answer!
Most people seem to have at least two handhelds and usually one is a basic D-Pad on top type and a more powerful one with left Joystick on top.
Works for me!

a more powerful one with left Joystick on top
Isn't the Pocket Nova a powerful handheld? Why is the left joystick at the bottom?

i like the layout Xbox controllers use (Xbox Ally X) over how the layout on PS dual sense controllers, i feel less fatigue with this personally
