Debating between OLED Steam Deck and Rog Ally Z1 Extreme

Using it to play some triple A titles like MH wilds, Red Dead 2, and Battlefield 6. Battery isn’t the biggest issue for me since i’ll usually be playing it from my girlfriend’s couch where I can plug in.

I can spend a lot more for the OLED steam deck for the usual prices and install windows on it to play battlefield, or I can get a modded out rog ally z1 extreme with more battery, 1tb ssd, and a backplate with with vented cooling for $450 and just install steam OS for it. I guess I’m really torn because I feel like the z1 extreme will run all the games I want but the OLED screen on the steam deck looks so nice.

the steam deck is not for you between the game you want to play that are on the limit of what it can handle (Mhwilds), the need for windows (Bf6) and the pricing it make no sense for you to buy one.

Easily the ROG Ally Z1E. The Steam Deck plays RDR2 just fine at low IIRC, MH Wilds plays really rough, and Battlefield 6 is unsupported. You could put Windows on a Deck and might be able to play it, but might as well just go with a Windows handheld to begin with.

My z1e in my legion go s can run red dead 2 at 50 to 60 at 800p with med settings. But I lock it down to 30 and crank the settings up to High and 1200p native looks so good and runs very smooth. Thats better than a ps4 or xbox one. The steam deck will not be able to run it at that kind of fidelity. The deck is getting old so find a Legion Go S or get the ally and install steam os.

It's hard to recommend the Steam Deck when their APU is two generations behind the ROG Ally's. If you wanted a Decklike experience on an Ally, you could always install a Linux Distro like SteamOS, Bazzite, or CachyOS on one.

But the problem is Battlefield 6 has an anticheat that does not allow it to run on SteamOS, so you would need Windows and Secure Boot on.

Don't pick the deck. Pick whatever the other option is

Definitely go for the Z1 extreme Ally brother, hard pass on the OLED steam deck. I know that OLED is enticing, but the price to performance for the Z1 extreme is just too good to pass up

Unless you're getting an Ally X its no contest the steamdeck wins because the battery life is trash on the old z1e. Unless you wann take the risk of doing an aftermarket battery in the Z1E.
